The store has a responsibility to supply food, economically.
The community has a responsibility to behave in the store and not steal from it.
Sounds like the community did not meet its obligations.

Sorry but there is no responsibility for the store to do anything. This is America and our economy is based on capitalism. We hope the company has good values, ethics and purpose but that’s when customers get to choose where they spend their money.

"Anger " "sense of betrayal" Uhhh Whole Foods doesnt have to stay and be unprofitable, nor does it have to tolerate theft and shrink which I'm sure is a primary reason for closing. It's not a cheap place to shop to begin with. Why don't these news stations ask some tough questions like how many shoplifting arrests have been made and what were the sentences for those found guilty? That Whole Foods was incentivized to open there soley to try to make a rough area look "upscale." There's no way the company said "What a perfect location for our next store" without some coaxing like tax breaks.

What crappy reporting. They try framing this as some sort of social disaster. It is really very simple; companies keep profitable locations and close unprofitable locations. Whole Foods occupies a niche that caters to high income shoppers. It was silly to think it could ever work in a low-income neighborhood. Several common taters have suggested that shoplifting is allowed to run rampant in Englewood. I am not personally familiar with that area, but criminals are forcing many retailers out of Portland, Minneapolis, Seattle, and other liberal strongholds.

What’s the reason for the closing? Does theft and crime have anything to do with it? It’s hard to invest and have a thriving community when so many folks just want to take and steal and rob. That’s why nobody wants to invest in the community let’s face it. All you have to do is look at other ethnic neighborhoods that THRIVE. Little village bridgeview Chinatown etc All of those communities are non white they are middle eastern Chinese and Hispanic. Now ask yourselves why there are no thriving districts like this in Chicago in any black neighborhood? Maybe the problem is with itself and not anybody else? Internal struggle is poisoning the prosperity and that’s why nothing flourishes. until we recognize that to be the truth nothing will ever change. The city and politicians will continue to hand out free (taxpayer) money because politicians are GREAT at spending other people’s money in exchange for votes and nobody will ever learn themselves how to become successful and independent. This cycle will repeat and you will always have exactly what you have in these neighborhoods, poverty crime fatherless homes despair hopelessness and mental illness record homicides and generations of welfare dependent career criminals raised by the state where the judge is the mother and prison replaces the father.

Englewood is also known as Chicago's murder capital, with more homicides being committed there than in any other neighborhood in the city. Almost daily shootings occur in Englewood, with an average of around 70 homicides per year. What else is there to say? No cash-flow positive private business in there right mind, especially considering small margins of the grocer industry in general would stay in this location. Probably too much theft and violence around preventing growth or at least on par with inflationary earnings contractions. I actually commend Whole Foods for the effort though. But until the city gets a grip of the violence and thievery no upscale growth will occur. Capitalist reward systems, while unfair in many cases, don't work like that.

The other problem is getting help. Kids on drugs and parents not wanting to work and who outside of that community even would want to work in a murder capital of the area.
"Profit" is for old white men anyway so they should leave that area. 😲 Why are we even blaming the company for making a corporate decision. We aren't owners, we aren't paying their bills, we aren't providing benefits to the employees if people are stealing more than the community is actually paying for.
They would need to hire guards with guns and frisk people coming in and going out. That doesn't make sense. Crazy how we blame everyone else. But I am not a whole foods buyer either. No matter what neighborhood is it in.🤭
