What if the One Ring Went West During the Third Age? Theory

- The One Ring is a vital instrument of Sauron's survival and downfall in the Lord of the Rings, but what would happen if it wasn't in Middle-Earth during the War of the Ring? Thank you all so much for watching, this video was so much fun to make! Let me know your thoughts about this theory in the comments below! Would it happen like this or would the tale go differently? Happy New Years everyone, I will see you all soon! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

I think it's far more likely Glorfindel would have been corrupted by the ring before ever reaching Valinor. Being such a powerful elf, it would have a very strong influence on him.
Sending everything bad to the west lol. Let’s send poo to the west too
They're taking the hobbits to Valinor!
Agreed
The joy of a 1000 hobbits enjoying there second breakfast!!! Love that one!
Haha
hahaha came to comment that and it was top
The logistical nightmare of feeding all then as their accustomed.
@Toxic Delirium Dude. Fuck off
I felt that one in my core. I love a second breakfast
It's interesting how this theory ends with an alternate version of Dagor Dagorath.
That is the final battle with Melkor, not Sauron. In this they are just ridding the world of Sauron to begin the age of men, devoid of magic.
You may be too generous with how willing the Free Peoples would come together.
My thought exactly.
@@hunkleberrymilldewbeespark3851 Nah they would all come together but one person would tell the other armies the wrong location on accident
Yeah what if the elves and dwarves refused to fight on the same side
Without the one ring no one feel the need to possess the ring so yeah i think the free people will come together to kick sauron butt
Well, the whole point of this video is to send the One Ring to the west, so of course the free people have to somewhat agree to do that.
Interesting take, however, I believe the Valar in their wisdom would not reject something like that but rather find a way to destroy it themselves or bind Sauron's will to it in order to summon him back. Also, if Ents were up against the black gates they would have brought entire forests with them of huorns and though they should be lit on fire this would undoubtedly overwhelm Sauron's forces. The end would have been very different I think, especially with Glorfindel championing the free peoples' cause before the Valar.
The One Ring is specifically an artifact of Middle-Earth and is of its nature. Although the Valar accepted the Silmaril of Eärendil, I believe that is because of its creation in Valinor. The One Ring in contrary is purely of Middle-Earth and does not belong to Valinor like Sauron does.
Out of that I would expect the Valar to reject the One Ring, however accept Sauron like they did here Saruman as they are both Maiar.
@@fisch37 I think there may be some confusion here as Middle-earth is still overseen by Manwë and his governance. It is a part of Arda and as such under his protection. Tolkien stated that he was keen to be involved in combating Sauron’s influence even from afar, thus why the Great Eagles and Wizards were sent by Manwë. It is not so much a matter of whether it belonged in Valinor but more of holding one of their own accountable with part of his (Sauron’s) will imbued within the ring itself. Just some deductions.
@@ErelasInglor That's a fair point...
It might have been forged in middle earth but it holds a piece of Sauron in it. Like a horacrux in Harry Potter
I think if Sauron could beat the "free folk" with his current armies... He would have already. If it comes to an all-in pitched battle I think the free folk would be victorious. Sauron had no need to ally with Saruman if he had an all conquering army.
Maybe It Wasn't All Conquering But It Still Had The Ability To Kick The Free People's Butt If They Were On The Defense.
If they stop the hobbits giving Tom bombadil from chating with gandalf they will turn to ash
that's not true. the very reason the council decided to destroy the ring is because they could not beat Sauron by conventional means. This video was already very optimistic in the sense that all the free people would unite much easier without the ring (which is a stretch), but they still lost decisively without even meeting Sauron.
I dont think you're considering how long wars can last, and the difference between defending land and conquering it
@Jared Bradley it was Sauron manipulating saruman through the Palantir that bewitched him. I don't think saruman made the decision. He was definitely manipulated.
i've said before that the Valar are assholes for leaving the mortal races to clean up THEIR mess. Morgoth was one of them and they still let him off the hook once and the people of middle-earth practically had to beg the Valar to act and get rid of him permanently. When Morgoth was defeated Sauron tried to convince them he'd changed and for whatever reason, despite Sauron being Morgoths No. 2 guy, they just left him in Middle-earth. Then he shows up to numenor, corrupts the island and sends them towards Valinor but even then all the Valar and Maiar do is crush the Numenorean fleet and sink Numenor, again, Sauron gets off virtually scott free. WTF?! After Sauron was defeated i'm surprised no one in Middle-earth didn't gear up to go and demand the Valar and Maiar be held accountable for their gross negligence throughout the ages.
The part that I didn't understand is when the Valar didn't help Feanor in his assault on Morgoth..I mean, Morgoth killed his father, whom Feanor loved, and stole his SIlmarills...and then the Valars didn't give a damn.
That's make so much sense dude. Thank you for these comment. Valar supose to clear the mess as Morgoth's next in line Sauron continous his master ideas. He was a semigod and to big of a chalenge for free races. Valar was like - they create lands, life, get involved in War of Wrath (when Morgoth already kicked everybody asses in years and years of conflicts), sink Numenor and then... left Middle Earth for its own destiny with Sauron who can't be matched by anybody.
they didn`t care about the middle earth.. that`s why they pretty much divided the bright lands off from the mortal lands.. they just got tired of the mess and decided just to wash their hands of the whole thing lol
Agreed the valar were ducks.
Except maybe ulmo who still cared and did more throughout the ages.
Just one thing with nummenor, it was eru who destroyed the island and split the undying lands from the circles of the earth.
Still the valar shouldve acted earlier.
Maybe EXPLAIN why men couldn't live in the blessed land like telling the truth that being mortal they would never inherit immortality and would be unhappy with the slow pace of life
I believe that the Valar seem much like the gods old. Those of our pagan for-bearers. They are not angelic spirits that can do no wrong. They are flawed and care less and less about our mortal struggles. I think they start off enamoured by the children of Illuvatar, but grow jaded when many of the elves reject their call and even more jaded when the Noldor rebel against their will. They try to do the will of Eru as they understand it.
Here's a theory... What Smaug hadn't died in the hobbit?
James Derington here’s another. What if Bilbo died by a orc filled with std’s. R.I.P Bilbo Baggins. Death by Penetration.
If he would have been turned to good, he could have destroyed it (apparently it's only the fire from were it was created and the flame of a dragon that could destroy it).
@Jason Rasmussen While I don't remember all the specific names, or when in the story it happened, I do remember somewhere in the LOTR story, that Gandolf specifically said that not even the fire from the most powerful dragon that ever lived could destroy the one ring, that only the fires (aka magma) from the volcano in which it was forged could destroy it. So not even tossing it into any active volcano, lava flow or magma chamber would do, only that one specific spot would work, is what I got from that line.
or if Bilbo (with the ring in his pocket) was eaten by Smaug
James Derington Sauron would have used him in the war of the ring 78 years later. He would have devastated the free peoples of middle earth on Sauron's orders. Sauron's forces would most likely have won the war. He would have taken possession of the ring and plunged middle earth into a second age of darkness. That's why Gandalf knew Smaug had to be destroyed.
Man I LOVE it when people come together to fight against a common enemy. It's so nice
The quest of Frodo and Sam is the key to resonating with people.
you know what I never thought about this as a scenario. but your ending for it fits the theme of good all ways win against evil. as evil is vain and shallow and is blown away by a strong wind. this theme is found everywhere in lord of the rings.
Um, sort of. But Gandalf encourages them to act and not wait to be bailed out by super-daddy Valor. I think passing the buck on action also leads people to evil; like many religious people who pollute and don't treat people well because "it doesn't matter, I can't fix everything and there will come Armageddon and God will fix everything." Even in non-profit boards I've been a part of I've seen that attitude that "everything will turn out alright; it always has" and result in inaction, more belief that someone (via God) will fix it. Often people do work out a solution but they are people, humans, of action. Sometimes not and I've seen them die or morph into something like being a corporate PR wing, whoring themselves for funding; "saved" by their super-daddy overlords.
In Yoysten's video the Valor came out because they had some responsibility, but what if it had been something else or a mortal evil tyrant or global warming they had brought on themselves? Also, I believe Gandalf meant for people to *act* not just for the good of Middle Earth but themselves and their people. If you stop Sauron but nobody learns a damn thing except someone else might bail you out then what's the point?
"global warming"
your right about teaching people to take action themselves. i was just simplifying the whole thing about evil never wins in lord of the rings. there is lesson in the books about taking action yourselves and not just relying on some else to do it for you. just another great message which could be found in this great series of books no wonder why there well renown classics.
I feel the dwarves could engineer super siege weapons that could shoot further than the eye could see, but the elves can see such a ridiculous distance that they could use these to pick off saurons army a ridiculous distance away. If they constructed these weapons of mithril then they would be able to withstand the strain of launching great objects such great distances. I really think if the dwarves and the elves allied they would be too powerful for sauron to challenge.
Túrin Turambar But its not a matter o distance but a matter of the projectiles. How make the impacts devastating enough to stop the hords of hundred of thousands before it reached them?
They could have fortified gondor and built them there. They could have had layers of lesser and lesser siege weapons, archers after that, and dug trenches. I am no master tacticion, but I do not think they would so foolishly take their whole army to the black gate like that. Any of the eagles could serve as a useful scout and see that they were clearly outnumbered and help them come up with a better plan. If all the free peoples of middle earth were in this together I kind of doubt Elrond, for example, would be so naive as to go along with this. They had plenty enough people who had been around a very long time and seen more than their fair share of wars; which makes me wonder why the elves didn't have much better technology? But I think that tolkien was speaking against technology in a sense, and that massive siege engines would have seemed too barbaric and un...chivalrous, (best way I can put that). Anyway. They could have had the ents help operate these massive engines as well, although that may have posed an issue s the engines could not be constructed without the burning of trees.
Another thought. After Saruman was defeated Gandalf offered him a chance to repent and help them against Sauron. Since the ring was sent into the west I feel Saruman would have taken up this offer and helped them fight Sauron. Probably with the plans of betraying them later if the ring washed ashore, but since he had such extensive knowledge of Saurons devices they could have done much better
I like the way you think.
Shoot the ring into Mount Doom
From miles away, where one can still let go of the ring
This isn't Warhammer and the siege engines in The Battle of Five Armies were invented by Jackson. Hell why not have them build a space elevator to the moon while you are at it.
YES MORE THEORY'S! Could you please make a theory if the battle of the five army's was lost and sauron gained control of the lonely mountain? Great work!
PLEASE!
not too sure you understand how to use an apostrophe andrew
I sorta don't
I'll summarize it Andrew:
Sauron Wins.
Flawless Victory!
FATALITY!
@@andrewbaughman5379no apostrophy for plurals, apostrophe is for possessives and contraptions
I thought you had let me down until I checked RUclips before going to bed. Thank you and a happy new year.
Why would the dwarfs, elves and hobbits fight in this scenario? The only thing that changed is the path of the ring. Surely the elves would still sail west and the hobits would'nt care
The Elves did fight in their own kingdoms during the War of the Ring. We are told that Lothlorian was attacked three times and Mirkwood was attacked on two fronts. The Elves were successful on these fronts spreading Sauron's resources thin.
What if saruman had the high ground?
...he did.
Only Obi-Wan has truly mastered the high ground

happy new year Yoystan my friend truly a depressing what if end of middle earth but outstanding in its delivery
Love this content. I’ll be here when you hit 1 million subs keep up the good work
1, you made the assumption that the ring made it west. Sauron's full focus was on retrieving the ring and he assumed that the ring would go west. His spies were guarding every road and path west from Rivendell while he had access to forces in Redhorn pass, Ettenmoors and, to lesser extents; Moria and the Withered Heath. Slipping a small band west would not escape detection and trying to reach the coast by force would end in a massacre.
2, Even if the ring made it to Mithlond, why would Sauron attack Minas Tirith? Sauron only attacked Minas Tirith because Aragorn showed him that he had the ring and was going to unite mankind with it's power and Sauron needed a pre-emptive strike to destroy the biggest city of men. Otherwise he would occupy Rhun and eastern Rohavion and expand his numbers, waiting until his forces were great enough to ensure a victory against Minas Tirith before sending them out
3, I agree about the scouring of the shire not happening, but Redhorn and Moria still has armies to threaten Rivendell, preventing Elrond from lending any troops to defend Gondor or marching on Mordor. Ettenmoors and Angmar are still in a position to threaten Mithlond and the Blue Mountains, meaning that they can't spare any forces, Dol Guldur would still threaten Lothlorien and the Easterlings are still in position to keep Dale and Erebor at bay. If you can beat Saruman though, then yes, the Rohirrim could ride to defend Minas Tirith. And the Umbar wouldn't be threatening the coast at first, they would be hunting down the ring-bearing ship, so Gondor could be stripped to defend Minas Tirith, until the ring was beyond Umbar's reach and they returned, forcing Gondor to restrengthen Gondor's armies on the coast. When Sauron attacked in the books, it was in haste and before he was ready. Give him the time to prepare and Minas Tirith doesn't stand a chance.

Thank you! :) Happy New Year!

I like your theories in general but this one seems to have a huge flaw in that sending the ring west wouldn’t change anything with regard to the free people’s ability or willingness to come together. They would still be bogged down in their respective regions.
Hannon le mellon nin! What a perfect start to new year.
so if they were able to send him over to valinor would the orcs have done what they did in the normal timeline?
K9vendetta The wolf of mordor I think without a leader, they likely would have scattered.
That was a great video and I would love to see more of this

I did not see that end coming, Yoystan. And wow, what an ending it was! The actual remaking of the world! Well done.
I love how you added the host of the Valar to this theory! It was my favorite in all of you theories of Middle Earth. Thank you so much!
I'm so glad the pictures you use are mostly not based off of the movies. I'm loving your videos. I'm also glad you have videos about the Valar, and other people from the Silmarillion.
You sir are a master story writer. You really plucked at my heartstrings during those last few minutes of your what is Siri. You played my heart like a fiddle, and I loved it!
Love your videos man! Keep up the good work! :)
The forces of the West loose, and the Ring is sent back, resulting in a Sauron victory.
Yoystan that was amazing you are one of the few people who can Wright such a great theory
Happy New Year Yoystan!
squadle Rutherford You too friend!
This was dope and made my sad for a second
I like that you said “like a 1000 hobbits eaten second breakfast”
wow this is actually a really good alternate story, though i feel that it kinda shares a similar story to that of the First Age, of how all the free peoples of the Middle Earth were defeated by the great evil and only then when all hope is nearly lost in the end, the Valar would then come and aid them and overthrow the great evil once and for all, like they did to Morgoth in the First Age
the only difference will be, Valar and its hosts would just probably swiftly defeat Sauron with relative ease than it was with Morgoth, for even though Sauron is like the most powerful of all Maia, he is still just and will be a Maia after all, his powers would never be like that of his master Morgoth, he knows too well that he is no match against the Valar themselves hence it is also the reason why he is hiding from them in the 1st place, also i doubt that the One Ring would even save him should he even clash against the likes of Tulkas, Ulmo and Eonwe, heck Tulkas would probably turn him into a helpless punching bag and ragdolling the shit out of Sauron with his Valar-wrestlemania moves (LMAO), crush the One Ring with his bare hands or make Sauron choke the One Ring in his throat, similar to what he did with Morgoth where after the War of Wrath, Tulkas beats his iron crown and made into a collar lol
I am blessed with this on new years???
Good video bro. Happy new year guys.
Thank you! Happy New Year!
"Renewing the world through the second music of the Ainur" sounds like an euphemism for an apocalyptic event 😅 Did you imagine that the Valar would fight Sauron on the battlefield, would there even be anything wort fighting for left in Middle-Earth by this point? A really enjoyable and thought-provoking video of yours, great stuff 🥰
These alternative stories are always fantastic
Happy new year yoisten
"The Joy of a Thousand Hobbits during Second Breakfast." that's one I have to remember!
It's been a while since I re-read the books, but I thought the company were under the impression that Sauron would expect them to try to send the Ring over the sea. As such, I think Sauron would have made preparations, and Glorfindel alone might not have made it to the coast, or not as easily.
Great theory indeed. I was waiting for the moment it would turn sour, but I didn't expect the twist ending. That is really cool!
If I may offer a suggestion on a future video, could you do an overview of the lands of Arda? Most of us know Middle-Earth and Beleriand, as well as Valinor and fair Numenor to some extent, but there is so much more to know about those and there is also so much more land in Arda. Thank you for what you do and keep on doing it!
I do love your alternative theories. Many thanks Yoystan
These videos really helps! My friend always asks me what would happened if some of the story elements was made differently. Now I have these theory videos to back me/him up! Looking forward to the new year!
This video was perfect. Please make more like it. I would really suggest doing a possible outline for what a video about the Final Battle would be like. Having Morgoth be released behind the door of night. I wish Christopher would have used his father's notes and made this story.
your videos are getting better and better and better.
Love the vid, but I was just wondering if you would know of any reasons why the vallar would reject the one ring? Or would they not know of what happened to the numenorians?
Thank you! I believe they would reject it as it was made from Middle-Earth, and it wasn't an issue that they wanted to involve themselves in. As for the Númenóreans, they would never fear an invasion like the one the men had threatened again because Ilúvatar made the world round, and Valinor was made unreachable by those who were not invited to prevent another disaster like the Downfall of Númenór from happening ever again with the other Free-Peoples.
Thank you so much for making this! And of course Happy New Year!
HAPPY NEW YEAR! I look forward to another year of your videos!
Love the video, great way to start the new year. Your theory videos are always a treat. While I do agree the destruction of the One Ring was the best scenario for saving Middle Earth, apart of me does wonder that if Sauron never returned would another evil take his place. No counting Melkor's return in the final battle referred to as "Dagor Dagorath". I doubt it but I could be wrong.
Anyway if I could suggest a theory, I always wanted to see a Hobbit theory for the sake of variety.
"What if Smaug killed Bilbo at Erebor and claimed The One Ring?"
Granted it would probably be too difficult for a Dragon to hold said ring on those claws of his. Anyway keep up the great videos. :)
Great video and happy new year
Thank you! Happy New Year!
Your theories are the only great lotr theories I have found. Have a great New Year!
Great video man! And happy new year!
DarkSage Asura Thank you! Happy New Year!
What if Elrond claimed Kingship over Lindon?
I love these re-writes and potential timelines. They make clear how incredibly intricate Tolkien's Middle Earth is, how much potential it has for victory or disaster, and makes me appreciate that much more Tolkien's original storyline
I would really love a continuing and increasing Series of Lord of the Rings-Comics, like with Star Wars
I'd like to see so many stories untold and the lore we knew increased and visualized

Amazing videos and happy new year also i hope you do more of these
Outstanding Video as always Y. Well done!!!
I put thumbs up because you did a great job and put work into it and made your own thoughts, story and pictures backgrounding this storyversion.
Just curious to see if you play any lotr games and which is your favourite,? Keep up the excellent work and happy new year to you and all your viewer's.
Great story!
However, I cannot quite understand some things.
- Why should the free people unite so much more effectively without the fellowship mission?
- Why should Saruman be that much weaker just a few months earlier?
- Why should the free people directly attack Mordor? They knew the strength of Sauron (Palantier) and have done their attack in the original story only to aid Frodo and his mission.
We need some stories about Arda after the War of the Ring. New enemies, threats, heroes and songs.
I love the tone and content of this video, I just have one question. Why would the Free Peoples attack Mordor? In the books, they only did it to draw out Sauron's armies to give Frodo a fighting chance, they knew they couldn't win, they just needed to buy him time. So in this case, why wouldn't they just consolidate all their strength in Minas Tirith and Osgiliath, giving themselves a major advantage by using defensive choke points and walls?
The eagles bear tidings, not burdens. The Ents only attacked Sarumon because of the outrage over what he had done to the forest. Hobbits wouldn’t muster at all, seeing themselves as far removed from the large folk. The elves were already committed to middle earth’s approaching age of man and had already started to move to Valinor in large numbers. The music of Eru wasn’t even the Valars to command, as they demonstrated when they couldn’t recreate the two trees of Valinor after Ungoliant killed them. No offense but I see many issues with your theory.I am happy to see this idea addressed though, as you were the only video in this idea.
Super duper again, can you ever let us down ? Happy new year people
+ HenkeChanged Happy New Year to you!! Listen,I don`t agree with this. I think because the ring is so utterly evil,It is very much like Heroin. I think ANYONE , man, elf, dwarf, wizard, dunedain ,hobbit anyone other than Frodo and Sam,as they got so very lucky even with the help/treachery combo of Smeagol/Gollum could have resisted the temptation of the ring.Look at just knowin g it was there near him did to Boromir. Look at the fear of Gandalf as he was asked to take it by Frodo. No my friend,I believe It would destroy the bearer and then have a horrible Domino effect on the free folk of Middle -Earth (Midgard-who are ya foolin J.R.R. LOL!!) Tolkien is my favorite author by a long shot. Yes I think that Sauron would become ruler of Middle Earth, and I don`t think that the Valar would do a thing. They warned the Noldor as they left the Blessed realm, and they were forever banished.Yes Manwe did relent and let the remnant of the Noldor to return. Men were not understood by the Valar. Only Mandos knows what happens to men upon death, and the Valar had never even seen a human/mortal in their "lives". No, Black and barren, with little hold-outs of reclusive men and hobbits would be all that would remain somewhat free. All others would be enslaved. The Elves would be terminated and turned once more to orcs,Dwarves were too few to live save a scant few that would hide in the Iron Mountains. I do believe that would be the case, unfortunately. Let me know what you think!!! Happy New year again!!
Happy 2018 to you too :) Sorry I'm late but I was away. I've read and watched a lot of "what ifs" and I think the way it went in the story was the best way. Well, I can't help to think that if they didn't lose Gandalf in the mines of Moria, maybe it wouldn't such a bumpy road but considering everything it didn't turn out bad after all :)
Happy New Year, Yoystan. I love your work.
Ever since I first read the Silmarillion, I have thought worst case that the Valar would intervene to stop Sauron but only after the Free Peoples had been utterly defeated. This was an excellent whatif story.
DUDE!!! That was a really awesome ending!! I actually got a tear in my eye
Great alternative story. However, I believe that there is a major flaw in your story: Gandalf couldn't have known about Saruman's treatchery because he only came to know it when he consulted the white wizard for guidance against Sauron. Therefore, because he didn't consult with Saruman, the White Wizard's secret, would have remained secret
You do such a wonderful job in your research I wish you could work this story into a novel...Tolkien said that his storys were a frame that many others would add to so the stories would continue to grow and would then to proceed to become even larger and vast...just as real history continues....
I agree with Elrond, the Lords of the West would not receive the Ring. The Valar would not accept the Troubles of Middle-Earth.
That said, I do wonder if Aule would know of some other means by which the Ring might be 'unmade.'
Hello again :) I really appreciate your videos. There is clearly a lot of work and love going into them. Could you please do a video on the potential of Aragorn and Arven's son. I'd be interested to hear your ideas as he would be mostly elf, ruling the men and uniting many important bloodlines.
"the joy of a thousand hobbits during second breakfast" made my whole week man😄
I doubt seriously that Elrond would have ever allowed this idea to go through. He was present when Isildur faltered and he witnessed first hand the repercussions of this failure. He saw Sauron defeated, but then risen again without the One Ring in his possession, so he knew full well that the only way to defeat a resurgent Sauron was to complete the task that Isildur failed to do all of those millenia before in the culmination of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
While he may not have been able to stand against the will of the heir of Elendil so soon after the death of his own High King, Gil Galad, three thousand more years of wisdom, experience, and being the de facto leader of the elves west of the Misty Mountains, he would have had the resolve to oppose any plan other than one that resulted in the destruction of the One Ring.
Dude, this was so bloody good!! Almost like the Silmarillions style!
That was a cool alternate scenario. I agree with your assessment, the path the fellowship followed was the more arduous one but ultimately correct.
That's was simply fantastic, please do more theories. PLEASE!!!!
I dont always agree with some details you bring up or some turn of events, but it is *impossible* not to be carried away with your story-telling and the enthusiasm of your voice! I love these videos of yours and just sitting down with some tea for a break from reality, just sitting and letting your imagination flow. Thank you. :)
One thing i remember from the books is how sauron *rushed* his attack on minas tirith, when aragorn revealed himself and the sword of kings through the palantir. The fact that there was an heir that could strengthen the will of the people of gondor and rid it of the corrupted influence of danathor (whom had been corrupted through his own palantir and was thus misleading the entire kingdom towards ruin) made him panic slightly. So he moved up his schedule and attacked much earlier than he had initially planned, the results of which was that the attack was much weaker and less impactful than it would've otherwise been, he wasnt 100% ready to commit to it but he *still* nearly won!
The biggest question is how much the elves and dwarves would *actually* be able to directly involve themselves, militarily i mean. We only know of *4* remaining elven kingdoms, which were little more than city-states at this point. When sauron waged war against them during the war of the rings in the north (before numenor had settled the kingdoms of gondor and arnor) the elves were *unable* to resist sauron and they suffered heavy causalties. Their numbers had been depleted even more since then because of their migration to the west.
I mean the elves, particularly the noldor/high elves, were *fantastic* smiths and craftsmen and great warriors, but there's only so much a couple thousand of them could accomplish vs the inumerable hordes and allies of sauron. The elves of mirkwood had lost a substantial amount of their forces a couple decades earlier at the lonely mountain. Rivendel relied purely on *secrecy*, not strength of arms, for their protection. The grey havens never quite struck me as the most militarized place in the world either, i remember something about them going to rivendel to get their armour or something in a previous war. So that leaves Lothlorien? :/
After the battle of minas tirith in the original story, the armies of men were almost entirely spent. We know rohan had left behind a couple thousand riders to guard their land while the rest went to gondor but.. feels like they were pretty screwed. Sauron would've most likely attacked again shortly after the first and it would've been an almost guaranteed win the second time. Now gondor, let alone all of middle-earth, wouldn't have been destroyed quite so quickly, but Minas tirith was the last great obstacle for sauron's domination and the free people would never have been able to muster the forces necessary to reclaim it. Once minas tirith was taken it was just a slow but sure cleaning up for sauron.
All in all i think you did a very good job on this one! Sometimes i feel more involved in middle earth scenarios and stories than the real one! xD
First of all there was no force that could be sent south to aid Gondor. The forces of Dale and the Lonely mountain were already too small to prevent defeat by the Easterling army already being mustered against them at the time of your tale. So they had no one to send. Sauron dispatched three armies from Dol Guldur to assail Thranduil, Lorien, and Rohan. The first two were defeated by elves operating in their own territory, where they the advantage of favorable terrain, logistics and their individual martial superiority to the orcs were such that the orcs needed a 10:1 advantage or more to win decisively. They lacked such numbers and so were doomed to defeat. Neither Lorien nor the Mirkwood realm knew how many would be thrown against them (it could have been as many as 30K which would be a very serious threat) and so they could send no forces to the South. As for Rivendell, this was a *house* not an Elvish state. Elrond may have had a few score warriors, but that's about it. The Dunedain sent pretty much all the deployable force they had -30 men in the standard timeline.
Sauron dispatched forces from Dol Guldur to prevent reinforcements from being sent from the North as Yoysten suggests could happen. Sauron is not stupid.
I would point out that had Saruman's stronghold not been eliminated by the Ents, Rohan would have needed to keep their forces in Rohan in support of the war with Saruman.
As it turned out, the strategy of Eru Illuvater against Sauron in the first round of the war was pretty much flawless. The defenses in Erebor, Mirkwood and Lorien held, even though Dale was overrun. Merry and Pippin arrived at precisely the right time to raise a strong force out of Fangorn (50+ ents plus some thousand of Huorns) who destroyed Isengrad and Sauron's offensive, allowing Rohan to aid Gondor. Similarly, the appearance of the heir of Elendil, wielding Aduril, magnified a force of 35 men (with the addition of the Dead) to an force that neutralized Sauron's Southern offensive, freeing up ca. 7K effectives to be added to the Battle of Pelennor Fields. This force, plus the addition of 12K effectives* from Rohan makes a reinforcing army nearly as large as the ca. 21K Minas Tirith had started with BEFORE their massive loses at Osgilliath and the Causeway forts.
Compare this to the 160K size of Sauron's deployable forces (that is, those that can be dispatched from Mordor while leaving defenses adequately staffed. Given that significant forces were already sent to Dol Guldur, Sauron could have sent, at most, about 100K to Minas Tirth, more than enough to overcome the 21K defenders, despite the tactical advantage the Gondorian forces would enjoy. But not enough to overcome the ca. 40K of effectives his forces had to deal with because of unforeseen interventions by the Ents and the the Aragorn-summoned Dead.
*In the battle at the edge of Fangorn Forest Eomer's 120 men totally destroyed an orc force twice their number with the loss of 15 men
Thanks for the video! I always enjoy these alternate stories :)
Happy New Year!
Nice work dude thanks
Happy New Year's Eve
You too friend!
Men of the West I always enjoy the way you insert a last hope and opportunity of renewal, it is very fitting to Tolkien's beliefs(at least to my knowledge). I hope you continue your awesome work for a long time.
Love your way of telling stories. Legendary as the trilogies.
I imagine that this'd make a really damn good Short Film thingy, having Gandalf standing among the most western shores of Middle-Earth, reflecting upon the dark, alternate history that's played out.
Hell I know I'd like to give that a shot :P
I really do like your theories Yoystan, keep them coming! Have you considered doing some of these as fanfiction rather than just a short video script?
Great work on this one!
I love your LOTR theories, they're like Black Mirror episodes in the way that they often start well, but have dark endings.
Absolutely brilliant. Well thought out ideas in all your videos.
Happy New Year ! and many more awesome videos I want to see! :)
