It's been about 20 years I've been waiting for Messi to turn into Maradona, I knew from as early as his Getafe goal that it wasn't going to happen, as there was simply too much luck attached to that goal that I saw immediately. But, the prospect of him reaching that level of footballing greatness exited me. Deep down though, I fully well knew it wasn't going to happen, but I still hoped it would or could. I'll miss Messi when he retires from the game, but Maradona, no chance of ever seeing that level again. He was Messi, Ronaldihno and Ronaldo, wrapped up into one person. He had the best traits of every one of them. He was Incomparable and by a distance the very best player I've ever seen.
Far above any awards, stats and even titles: his extraordinary talent, intelligence and technique transcended perfection. His IQ transcended genius itself. What he did on the pitch was not only unbelievable, but also impossible for any other player. Magician, supreme genius!
He had an art and art that can't be practiced the only way you can own it is if you have it like Diego had it. The world has seen messi and ronaldo but there is never going to be a second Maradona

Ive lived through the maradona and messi era and maradona is the best , he played at a time where it was a tough game , not like now where they play in slippers and refs look after the gifted ones , also maradona did it with napoli who were a mid table team and argentina who at best were decent and won world cup Italian league and in Europe , messi only barca , people on here say they cant stand him but hes a god in Scotland he is the best ever . El mejor control de balón que he visto. El mejor regateando, con la capacidad de soportar la presión de 5 o 6 rivales a su alrededor dejando así libres de marca a sus compañeros. Ha ha today's game is the furthest thing from a contact sport! 30+ years ago players had lumps kicked of them you clearly have no recollection or knowledge of football pre mid 90's. Messi wouldn't survive back in the 60's/70's/80's no protection from referee's or laws from governing bodies that lean more towards protecting the likes of Messi, Ronaldo etc. Messi isn't even recognised in his native Argentina in fact he finished 3rd in their sportsperson of the year! His achievements for Argentina at international level can only be described as woeful for this supposed "genius" I think his average goals to game ratio is almost 1 in every 3 games. Doesn't do for his country what he does for his club and the reason he's so revered at Barcelona is that he's had the best players in the world surrounding him week in week out with the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Naymar, Suarez etc, etc. He's had his transfer fee triggered by a few clubs but is too frightened to move. He would be half the player in England that he is in Spain. He isn't in my top 20 never mind top 1. There's that much garbage in the game these days anyone with half an ounce of talent stands out and it's been ruined by a corrupt governing body with Molly coddling rules and over exorbitant wages. Técnicamente insuperable. De lejos, ha sido lo mejor que se ha visto en una cancha en cuanto a golpeo, control, conducción, regate y pase. Nada le era imposible a esa zurda mágica. Y, además, físicamente era fortísimo, basta ver la cantidad de empujones y patadas que le tiraban y no bastaban para frenarlo. Quizá su talón de Aquiles fuera el rendimiento, y eso es lo que le separa de Messi en el presente o de Di Stéfano en el pasado, que rendían al máximo en un noventa por ciento de las veces. Diego les supera en talento pero su rendimiento no siempre estaba al máximo nivel. Un gigante, cada día juega mejor.

He had everything to be the best dribbler and he even did it in a footballing period where the ball was harder and fouls were called less (watch Maradona vs Gentile). He even had the aggression where he would fight for the ball when dribbling and he did his dribbles at high speeds with the ball in close proximity with his feet. Only current players that I think that have his aggression on the ball are Sanchez and Suarez.

You said he is more effective, yes he is but against la liga defenders of this era who always pulls out of a tackle because of tougher refereeing system at present aimed at protecting players. It's been about 20 years I've been waiting for Messi to turn into Maradona, I knew from as early as his Getafe goal that it wasn't going to happen, as there was simply too much luck attached to that goal that I saw immediately. But, the prospect of him reaching that level of footballing greatness exited me. Deep down though, I fully well knew it wasn't going to happen, but I still hoped it would or could. Ha ha today's game is the furthest thing from a contact sport! 30+ years ago players had lumps kicked of them you clearly have no recollection or knowledge of football pre mid 90's. Messi wouldn't survive back in the 60's/70's/80's no protection from referee's or laws from governing bodies that lean more towards protecting the likes of Messi, Ronaldo etc. Messi isn't even recognised in his native Argentina in fact he finished 3rd in their sportsperson of the year! His achievements for Argentina at international level can only be described as woeful for this supposed "genius" I think his average goals to game ratio is almost 1 in every 3 games. Doesn't do for his country what he does for his club and the reason he's so revered at Barcelona is that he's had the best players in the world surrounding him week in week out with the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Naymar, Suarez etc, etc. He's had his transfer fee triggered by a few clubs but is too frightened to move. He would be half the player in England that he is in Spain. He isn't in my top 20 never mind top 1. There's that much garbage in the game these days anyone with half an ounce of talent stands out and it's been ruined by a corrupt governing body with Molly coddling rules and over exorbitant wages. He had everything to be the best dribbler and he even did it in a footballing period where the ball was harder and fouls were called less (watch Maradona vs Gentile). He even had the aggression where he would fight for the ball when dribbling and he did his dribbles at high speeds with the ball in close proximity with his feet. Only current players that I think that have his aggression on the ball are Sanchez and Suarez.

You said he is more effective, yes he is but against la liga defenders of this era who always pulls out of a tackle because of tougher refereeing system at present aimed at protecting players. Maradona played against Italian defenders who broke his ankle in the first game itself.
You said he scored 3 times as many goals, I think I have answered it already but I need to add a little bit more. Greatness is not measured in terms of goals it's about the effect a player has on the team.

Maradona is more artistically skillful. That doesn't mean he's a better/more effective dribbler. Messi is just more ruthlessly efficient and consistent. Yes, scoring was lower in 80s Seria A than todays La Liga, but Maradona never topped the scoring charts, whereas Messi just obliterates his competition (barring another all time great in Ronaldo). And his better finishing (vs Maradona) cannot account for the discrepancy - he's just better at dribbling himself into goalscoring opportunities. You say it's not all about goalscoring.. what does Maradona do to offset Messi's extra 250 goals (especially when a load of dona's goals were from penalties)? Why is Maradona's impact for Napoli greater than Messi's for Barca? Maybe people romantazise what Maradona did in Italy.. it was easier for a small club to win back then than it is now (Verona won Seria A in '85, after all). Messi has led his team to 3 CLs (Maradona wasn't good in his 2 CL ties), incl an unprecedented 2 trebles. Overall, Maradona's career impact is more akin to Ronaldinho than Messi.
