Brilliant, poetic, and technically first-rate. His control of phrasing and dynamics is perfect. THE pianist of Romantic music for the 21st century. BRAVO!
Well put. I've been thinking the same thing. It's so amazing to hear the virtuosic material so well-thought out, and not just loud and fast. He adds another dimension of expressivity, even to the most ferocious fast passages.
Unbelievable! Through contrasts, nuances and supreme intelligence, he actually makes this piece much better than what it usually is, even under other prestigious fingers!
Totally. If you're skillful enough to be able to ignore the notes and just ride the sweep of a super technical piece like this you really can "improve" it. No disrespect meant to Maestro Liszt, but yeah big ups for M. Grosvenor. This sucka aint easy.
It's that he just has a special skill for Liszt, I would surmise! Great Liszt playing is supremely majestic, heartfelt, emotional and breath-taking. It has to be a combination of transcendent musicality and a massive technique. Benjamin has it all...
Phenomenal talent blossoming before our eyes ,and ears. Extraordinary concentration and sensitivity from start to finish.Move over Brendel, Gilels & Richter, there’s a new kid on the block. Even the microphones gather round to watch 6:19 ! as seeing is believing. Simply astounding.
Well Benjamin, as you see, the approbations of praise are profuse and rightly so. Thank you for sharing this phenomenal piece. I just want to encourage you to continue to love piano playing as it is the gift God has given you - and you've developed it wonderfully. Keep sharing and enjoying. Warmly. Ken
There's no "gift from God" !!! Please !!!!! It's atavic talent, and WORK, WORK, WORK, WORK..... Some people can't avoid bringing God in every conversation !
@@69EBubu touchy, touchy! Actually, I am one that played on a competitively high level in my years of pursuing a performing career, and I can personally attest, it is most certainly a gift from God to those that can do it. It's up to them what they make of it. To master it or to squander it is the question.

My favourite interpretation of that piece, I could melt away listening to this record!
I enjoyed a LOT his playing. I particularily admire his powerfull fingers that do not require lots of fake movements to achieve a full range of sound. Simply A GREAT PIANST
Benjamin, your piano playing is absolutely exquisite. Such wonderful touch and clarity of articulation not to mention your sensitivity and beautiful interpretation are truly miraculous. Your pianism reminds me of my most favourite pianist the long lamented Dinu Lipatti. I wish you every success and a long long long career
Mr Grosvenor!!! This Interpretation is really complete!!! Finest sounds, delicious agogics, impressive virtuosity, ans a most carefull score reading. Really inspiring!!! Thank you!
This interpretation is mesmerising and was my introduction to this marvellous work❤. I can however recommend you another fabulous interpretation! ruclips.net/video/YDNoDgrxJbg/видео.html
Dear Young Sky Walker; You're taking us on a mighty journey with you. We'll be watching/listening to you for a long time. Your love, talent and enthusiasm draw us to your like gravity. Blessings on all you love... though the all of time and space.
Terrific playing - scinitillating where needed and sentimental where needed. Bravo Benjamin! (And good to see that the posture is much better these days!)
Just heard him twice perform Brahms Piano Concerto No 1.....sublime.....had just one ticket & after Fri nite purch'd a second ticket....really...words ARE only 1/2 truths.....how do you describe such talent....
Awesome ! It's very rare to have such a clear view of the fingers at work, it's a marvel for amateur pianists like me, and we can even see the pedals by looking inside the piano. I was at your concert in La Roque D'anthéron last year, it brings back a great memory. It would be even greater if you could film pieces you played recently which are not on your new cd (the Chopin's second sonata you cancelled there ? would love to hear that).
Benjamin thank you for sharing this recording of you with us! I am always left in awe of the developed talent and musicianship that pours out of you...a giftedness by the Creator. How blest you are and in turn such a blessing to us.
The quality of the performance along with the amazing piano and recording studio really stands out when compared to other pianist renditions of this piece. Awesome stuff Benjamin!
Wow! absolutely incredible! I can listen to this over and over and discover something new each time! Also.... Did anyone else notice the decorative sheet music inside the piano? Love how it's hanging out there and CLEARLY being absolutely NOT needed... lol.
It is there casually. It has been carefully studied and incredibly learnt by heart, mastered and perfectly played by this miraculous piano playing living computer which I think this young man is.
Benjamin, thanks so much for sharing this video. Liszt is one of my favorite composers. It's a piece which is both beautiful and challenging. You're such a huge talent and actually one of the very few pianists who is able to make me cry when listening to your performances. Beautiful playing, amazing technique but after all it is your amazing musicality that moves me. I am going to see you in a concert in 2 months time. Really look forward to that experience!
The upper register notes were ever so slightly dimmer, as if there were several pieces of stacked paper sort of over them....😉 Imma be honest, I'm not crazy about Liszt. I am, however, crazy about this piano playing. What an absolute joy and breathtaking artistry!!!❤️❤️❤️💐💐💐
Actually I didn't like it. I don't like the dynamics and technique in some parts of the piece. In the climax he started to rush. And he is not playing what is written in the sheet paper when the main part of the beginning starts. 6/10
Well played, I'm wondering though if you ever considered playing more on Bösendorfers or Fazioli's? In my opinion they will likely suit your style and tone more
Great observation! Many musicians play a piece in a few different settings and put them together, when they do a studio recording. Obviously, the engineer who put this together wasn't detail-oriented, and neither Grosvenor. But he is still an exceptional pianist.
He is clearly a phenomenal pianist. I am puzzled by the fact that the audio seems perfectly synced on both takes, which makes me wonder if the audio is also a mashup of multiple takes... I don't mean to criticize Grosvenor in any way at all. I've listened to as many of his recordings as I can find. He is truly exceptional and I look forward to his future career.
I'm guessing the audio must be a mashup of multiple takes, though I'm not absolutely sure. I have a RUclips musician friend who does magic with his multiple audios, it's mind-blowing what modern recording technique can do. I also look forward to Grosvenor's future career.
Obvious cheat right? What a hack. ;) Looks like it's simultaneous edits of audio/video to me? But it sounds like a contiguous performance - so, even more impressive for consistency. Glenn Gould would be pleased. He's amazing. His Chopin Scherzo is unbelievable, as is this.
Most likely because it was pressing against one or more keys, preventing them from rising when released. Like anything made of wood, it changes shape slightly in response to changes in temperature and humidity. A well-known Steinway technician who did some work for me recommended that I insert pieces of a matchbook cover under both ends of the key slip to alleviate this problem.
These 10 "thumbdowns" are utterly annoying because not followed by a comment which should be compulsory. They should be forbidden without a comment. Don't you think???
Grosvenor is a fine pianist, but I don’t like Liszt, whose piano works were written for the sole purpose to show himself (the composer) as a super virtuoso, and to show how large his hands are. That’s why not everyone could or was ready to play Liszt, but still being a world class pianist. The late Radu Lupu, whom I knew personally was one of them.
Interesting interpretation, virtuosic and emotional. However, the title is misleading. It makes one think that you are the composer. It should read something like this: Benjamin Grosvenor plays Liszt: Tarantella, S.162 Please correct it.
I'm with you, totally! Nobody, or very few like you and me, seems to care about the most important component in music, that is the AUTHOR, who gives birth to everything, who provides the idea, the material for all the others to work on. But that's the way it goes in this more and more and more messy world of ours.
Burntshmallow yes I did , what's the problem ? Many could do the same but didn't have the opportunity to start at five and practice with the best teachers etc etc so it's hardly a genius matter ?
This comments action seems to be ram packed full of grovesnor sycophants or maybe his friends ? An average pianist playing average warhorse fare nothing like Marc Andre Hamelin etc
I love how he seemingly floats in and out of phrases. What Incredible control. Breathtaking virtuosity!
His dynamic range is impressive. It's the best performance of this piece I've heard so far. He made it a piece of art and not just a virtuoso piece.
Brilliant, poetic, and technically first-rate. His control of phrasing and dynamics is perfect. THE pianist of Romantic music for the 21st century. BRAVO!
Even the hardest, most virtuosic passages has a sense of meaning, emotion, content and idea. A truly profound performance.
Well put. I've been thinking the same thing. It's so amazing to hear the virtuosic material so well-thought out, and not just loud and fast. He adds another dimension of expressivity, even to the most ferocious fast passages.
VERY clever &joining playing....he's so talented, bravo!

Heard this on a Liszt playlist on Spotify. Definitely one of the clearest and more emotionally played versions 💕💕
Ben is a fantastic young pianist. I heard him live about a week ago. He is the real thing.
This boy is a genius.
Best way to spend 9:05 mins, watching Benjamin Grosvenor play, and this Tarantella is scintilliating.
I am in awe!! A unique touch and supreme musicality. What a gift!!!
Easily among the very best young pianists in the world today.

In the top of the best versions for sure, huge congratulations, MERCI !
Phenomenal playing! Your are so musical that I forget all about the razzle-dazzle aspect of the piece.
Ha un tocco magico e una tecnica superlativa. Che meraviglia di pianista...
What a gorgeous sound through the arpeggios through the 50sec mark
I'm positive he is actually channeling Liszt's spirit.

just phenomenal. I have no words!
Beautiful!

Great performance...great control of the keyboard. You are super
No words. Amazing.
You just said amazing
Beautiful delicate touch he possesses
Terrific playing - scinitillating where needed and sentimental where needed. Bravo Benjamin! (And good to see that the posture is much better these days!)
What an Artist! This is so beautiful, and I am having the privilege of listening to it! I only wish I could hear him in person!
IF only I could play it
Just heard him twice perform Brahms Piano Concerto No 1.....sublime.....had just one ticket & after Fri nite purch'd a second ticket....really...words ARE only 1/2 truths.....how do you describe such talent....
7:02 WOW, he played the whole piece extremely beautifully with so much musicality
Phenomenal accuracy and sentiment!
Awesome ! It's very rare to have such a clear view of the fingers at work, it's a marvel for amateur pianists like me, and we can even see the pedals by looking inside the piano.

Ken W Anderson very well said...
sehr schön Du bist sehr begabt .Bravissimo¨!!!!!!!
A pleasure to listen to and to look at. Great Benjamin
Fantastico musicista.
Magnificent!!!!
What a musician.
The quality of the performance along with the amazing piano and recording studio really stands out when compared to other pianist renditions of this piece. Awesome stuff Benjamin!
Amazing pianist and amazing performance
Spectacular.

@@ff516 Agreed! :)
Watched him in concert last night. Absolutely incredible pianist
Phenomenal.
brilliant!Fantastic! Excellent!
Молодец ! Спасибо за видео..
Your playing is breathtaking! Bravissimo!!!

ah....here the "instrument of the Immortals'...what a wonder with one of the new "Immortals' still quite alive and blazing
wow!
좋다~
So great. And finally a pianist who doesn't play with his mouth agape. Great to see someone play with mouth shut.
And no silly theatrical faces, .....
6 people don't like this ???? Mysteries of the human mind....
Actually I didn't like it. I don't like the dynamics and technique in some parts of the piece. In the climax he started to rush. And he is not playing what is written in the sheet paper when the main part of the beginning starts. 6/10
Can you this ? I doubt very much.
Well played, I'm wondering though if you ever considered playing more on Bösendorfers or Fazioli's? In my opinion they will likely suit your style and tone more
😍😍😍😍😍
8:22 he made it so grande
j adore ce morceau et je trouve que tu le jou trop bien mais tu la seu en combien de temps ce morceau ?
Suberb.
Strange how his sleeve is turned up on the over-the-shoulder angle, but not the others. ;)

He's amazing. His Chopin Scherzo is unbelievable, as is this.
Maybe they just had one camera and so he had to repeat for different camera shots?
I just can't get into liszt save for very few pieces and his orchestral works
Dude knows how to play.
i bet this guy is amazing at fortnite!
I never thought a British pianist can play with such pianistic and artistic excellence, better than my old LP recordings of it.
Why is it the front key slip of the piano is removed and sitting on the stage?
Most likely because it was pressing against one or more keys, preventing them from rising when released. Like anything made of wood, it changes shape slightly in response to changes in temperature and humidity. A well-known Steinway technician who did some work for me recommended that I insert pieces of a matchbook cover under both ends of the key slip to alleviate this problem.
Oooh those spiders!
Couldn't even wait for the technicians to finnish putting the piano back together could you. Good on you dude.
Like people who play chess, they keep silent
These 10 "thumbdowns" are utterly annoying because not followed by a comment
which should be compulsory. They should be forbidden without a comment.
Don't you think???
I will also add that, if followed by a comment, they could be interesting.
They could point out something you must have missed.
Who should care??????

That’s why not everyone could or was ready to play Liszt, but still being a world class pianist. The late Radu Lupu, whom I knew personally was one of them.
So, a few people disliked this because.........it was raining that day? Too much glare on the side of the piano? You didn't like his haircut?
Interesting interpretation, virtuosic and emotional. However, the title is misleading. It makes one think that you are the composer. It should read something like this: Benjamin Grosvenor plays Liszt: Tarantella, S.162 Please correct it.

he looks like Magnus Carlsen
He is definitely the new Georgy Cziffra!
🇬🇧👍🏻🇬🇧
far better.......!
More sensitive actually
Sometimes you have to be more expressive and full of energy...Liszt's pieces need that emotion I think.
dimitra dimitriu are you saying that he's not?!
yes the piano must be completely sawdust after you have finished [sarcasm]
sam333 Exactly,you got it😉
(sarcasm)
Musician; not a typewriter
nice but all technique just practice for years have a brain and good chops maybe lucky to memorise easily then there you have it a pianist
sam333 this ain't just technique! Hopefully u can see just how much musicality it takes to pull this off as well as Benjamin
You just lost any credibility you ever had. He is an extraordinary musician.
You just described every person who is good at something ever.
andoletube you sir have no credibility so your comment is null
Burntshmallow yes I did , what's the problem ? Many could do the same but didn't have the opportunity to start at five and practice with the best teachers etc etc so it's hardly a genius matter ?
Crafted fingers, zero content. (I see my opinion would be unpopular here, but we don’t need to be all the same.)
This comments action seems to be ram packed full of grovesnor sycophants or maybe his friends ? An average pianist playing average warhorse fare nothing like Marc Andre Hamelin etc
