@@DrewGarage I love the technology in the Prius, the hybrid drivetrain is ingenious. Unfortunately, this is my newest vehicle, and so far it's been by far the most problematic, although to be fair it has 230k miles. This fuel pump thing had me incredibly close to dumping it, but I'm now glad I didn't, because (hopefully) I think I've fixed all the most common problem areas at this point already, although when I bought it I was told the hybrid battery had recently been replaced by the dealer, and I didn't get any receipts with that one so... We'll see. Seems strong at the moment. I did just get another TPMS light, but haven't done anything but check the pressures just yet. Probably a dead battery in one of the transmitters. Covering the mortgage would be nice, but I'm still an awful long ways from that one, sounds like I'm doing about as well as you in that regard at the moment. It's slowly getting better over time though.
Well I think your all around quality is awesome. Perhaps buy a problematic car (prius or other) and chronicle the entire thing on here? If you’ve got the time. I wish I did. Barely keep my head about water and my life is problem cars haha. Wife and 4 kids stay home on what I earn - so often no time to grab my phone and record, let alone set up a tripod and edit etc Anyway, I think this one of the best prius videos I’ve seen
You know they make power probe testers so u don't have to lug that MRI machine power supply around 😂 Nice tutorial on this repair. My 2005 Prius is aging and I wasn't aware this future nightmare exists. I'll be the cheap guy figuring out how to add an external pump and plumb it in line with the existing tank. Then just unplug the bad one. Unless of course the tank itself needs replacement. 👨🔧💰
I hope for your sake it lasts a long time to come. I also just did the dashboard display failure repair but didn’t have time to record it. If you lose your speedometer cluster or have issues where the engine doesn’t want to turn off, search RUclips for the fix, it’s a small capacitor on the back of the instrument cluster. Today I noticed my A/C is getting less cold. Sounds like another video aiming soon.
@@ShanesGettingHandy I had a 2007 Prius that I sold and now I have an 05. Neither had the dash cluster issue 🤞 well, my 05's could go any day now... I am familiar with that repair, it's not too bad really. On my 07, I had felt the AC losing some ability so I tried charging it with more freon. Bad idea. Back then I didn't have actual HVAC gauges like I have now, so I just had a dinky meter on the can's hose. Clearly on the meter I overcharged the gas. Well, the system went into some kinda protection mode. There's no indication from a light or otherwise. Just the AC blows hot, like 100% not cooling. Scared me for a while. I pushed a flat head screwdriver on the schrader valve of the freon port to let off some gas. Did that for a bit, hooked up the hose to read the pressure meter again, pulled it off and let more gas out, etc, until I got back into the normal pressure zone on the meter. And the AC started working again. Back to its original condition at like half performance. 😕 I just lived with the lacking AC and I didn't want to fool with it again. About 1 year later that compressor gave out. Easy to diag that one. Switching on the compressor made a metal clinking sound and no cool air. A used compressor from eBay was 🤔 not much, like $120 if I remember correctly. Well, I ended up selling that car like a month later with the AC still broken. I gave the eBay compressor to the new owner. He had it installed and reported back a flawless and very cold AC. 🤷 My 05 earlier this year was getting warm but it was obviously from lack of air flow. Swapped out the blower under the glove box and now it's hurricane force ice cold 🥶. Anyway, keep in mind they go into silent protection if you overcharge the gas, and probably if it's undercharged as well. 👍
The pump access cover uses a black butyl tape. I usually dont apply anything, the old stuff will usually stick again, and the seat holds it down as well. -Dan, Pinpoint Repair.
Yeah... Tell me about it. The way I see it, I will be making a car payment for three months now until it owes me nothing once more. Sure is cheaper than five years worth of payments...
Thanks. I've had a leak develop such that my 2007 Gen 2 iTech Prius loses fuel just sitting in the carport. Not sure where it's coming from or if it's vaporising via some loose connection or what. I did have a rego check a few months ago, and I'm thinking the technician may have loosened something when he was checking. Not sure what part though.
@@ShanesGettingHandy Nope no smell or visual of any leak. Thanks, I'll let you know once I figure it out. I'm guessing the vapour is leaking as it's summer here in Australia and it takes a while for the tank to empty.
It's not just the app, it also requires a compatible scan tool. I was using the KingBolen Ediag. I'll add a link to the description of the video as well.
I had 10.5 volts to that fuse, amps it had 0.09 amps, is it good? I don’t have that other machine to check the pump is there any way to check without the machine thanks
Yes, that’s what it sounds like. Although technically it never actually starts, but it sounds like it’s running for a short bit as MG1 spins the motor and attempts to start it.
@@ShanesGettingHandy right. I checked all the MAF and throttle body, fuel vsv.. swapped from the working pri2. Still not starting. So next is the fuel pump/pressure test I guess
Since I've never seen the equipment you are using to check to see if pump is siezed... is there a more "common man" approach of items most garages will have? I just bought an 08 with fuel system issues (super cheap... since i knew tanks were expensive).
I started my search to see if I could Jerry rig an external pump to see if can get it running good (ICE isn't trashed... knocks, bad bearings etc,.) I paid less than a grand for one I'm working on and it's a trim level 5 so pretty sure even parting out I'd be ok at 1k if ICE is trashed. Your video just happened to be 1st one I ran into when seeing if I can make an external fuel pump to test engine.
At 1:12 jumper the two pins I show with a paper clip and listen for the pump to run underneath the rear seat. This will at least let you know if the pump itself can attempt to do pumping things.
Well, that's good information, but doesn't alone confirm the exact problem. What it does confirm is that somewhere in the circuit from the relay to the pump there is definitely something wrong. The pump itself is still certainly a possibility, but it could also be a wiring or connection issue. I would pull up the rear seat and directly wire 12v to the fuel pump connector as I showed next in the video. This is the final connection to the actual fuel tank/pump assembly, and if the pump does not run at that point, you have confirmed your problem to be the tank/pump assembly. Good luck!
If by "check hybrid" light you mean the red triangle, YES. Also, it sounds like your engine is not actually starting, but because the starter is different in this car than most, when attempting to start it sounds like it is running for a few seconds, but it's being spun by the hybrid motor. It's a bit deceiving. Have you checked the codes? Look for code P0A0F, which would point towards this issue as well, but you'd still be wise to confirm, as I did in the video.
The part number is 77001-47090. I would recommend checking with your local Toyota dealer first and then compare prices with what you find online for the same thing.
Glad you got it fixed! Working with fuel components is never fun though.
The tank was full, and getting it out was a challenge for sure.

If you have 10.5v to the relay, your 12v battery in the trunk is dead and quite likely the culprit of all your problems.
It’s an easy battery to change. They carry it at all the auto parts stores. I’d start there and see what happens.
Do the "new" tanks still have bladders inside of them?
I believe so, yes.
What were the symptoms? Does it start and stalls in about 8-10 seconds?

Hey, do you know if the fuel tank from a 08 would work in the 04/05 before the change? Or does it have to be a 04/05 tank?
Dang, I wish I had a solid answer for you, but I honestly don’t know what the exact changes were…
Nope. 04-05 (and some early 06's) are not interchangeable w/ 06+ cars. Can't put the earlier tank in a later car, or the later tank in an earlier car
I need this fuel tank as well. I have a 2007 prius. Can you send me the link to buy the fuel tank?
