- The Terraonion MODE is a device that lets you play Dreamcast or Sega Saturn games via SD card, USB or even HDD. One device works on both. In this video I install it on my Sega Saturn. Here's my install + getting it to work.

It's a pricey mod, but I am definitely gonna invest in one. My poor Saturn is just sitting not being used because the games are so expensive. This will definitely help show my Saturn some love.
Not alot of my games survived, but just one of them will fetch a high enough price to pay for the MODE.
This is a great way to breath new life into an aging Saturn console for sure.

I never owned a Sega Saturn, but it would've been nice to have it for a few games including:
- Marvel Super Heroes
- Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter
- Mortal Kombat Trilogy
- Pocket Fighter
- The King of Fighters '95
- The King of Fighters '96
- The King of Fighters '97
- X-Men vs. Street Fighter
- X-Men: Children of the Atom
Anyway, something like this wouldn't really be needed if these games on the Saturn were given a proper re-release on modern consoles.
A Saturn Mini would be so dope but probably too many licensing issues for most of the more memorable games.
Get one man they're dope. Just got my model 2 and now I want a Japanese model 1. Installed the phantom for $30 and it plays burnt games. Even the stock controller is amazing for playing all those games you listed.

The supplemental power cable is mostly for hard drives, namely mechanical ones due to their higher power requirements. You shouldn't need it at all for Micro SD cards, USB sticks and most SSD drives. Also, a good idea to put the plastic shield back underneath the power supply. You don't want any of the metal solder points on the bottom of the power supply, somehow, touching the metal plate underneath it.
I got the Fenrir a couple weeks ago and been having a blast playing a lot of the Japanese shumps amongst other types of games.
Mine arrives Sunday. So excited!

This device is essential because most Saturn games are 50 dollars plus. If you count imports now your talking 70 plus.
Food for thought, I paid 70 dollars back in the day when Xmen vs street fighter came out and that included the game and the converter cartridge and the 4 megabyte ram cart back in 97.
IMports are way cheaper. Can get em for under 40

Please let everyone know to not touch the power supply if it has been plugged in recently (could even be days) or if it hasn’t been discharged. You made me nervous there for a second.
Glad others pointed that out. That power supply may not be very powerful but enough to maybe make you jump out of your seat if something went wrong.
That power supply removal was a bit sketchy, assuming you didn’t ground yourself and the console before touching things. But even then, the way it was removed looked a bit dangerous.

Would have preferred this video without jumpcuts to know exactly how long it takes to install, but thanks for showing it off! I was somewhat turned off (Even though I already purchased) reading the manual realizing I'd have to take everything out of the saturn other than the motherboard.
I'll keep that in mind for future videos. I figured watching me screw and unscrew stuff was boring and would probably just be skipped over but have no problem leaving it in, too.
@@JohnRiggs It's fine either way, honestly I am sure I'm probably in the minority, but it is an install video (the only time I don't mind a few extra mins of video showing how things really went)
Things like this are great, you can prolong the life of your actual hardware, we know disc drivers someday will fail and we wouldn't have parts for replace.
Also some emulators have lag.
You HAVE TO PUT THE PLASTIC SHIELD UNDER THE POWER SUPPLY to avoid shorting out the power supply on the metal plate and avoid a possible fire.
Thanks for the video! The installation process seems straightforward and love the availability of the TerraOnion MODE too. Finally going to try to jump into the part of my childhood I was never able to experience because I went directly to N64 and PSX and skipping the Saturn :')

Would have been worth the time to just clean it out while it was open before modding it, since that could have been what made the disk drive fail to begin with.
Sounds weird, but I do not own a Sega Saturn, yet it is one of my favorite consoles of all time...

I don't need this plastic shield back, damn we missed some fireworks.
I was like WTF! That is a shield to prevent the PSU solder contacts from grounding with the metal chassis
I wanted to scream at him... so many metal solder points on the bottom of the PSU. I was like, man, if your Saturn didn't have one of those, there's a problem! LOL!
I use the Fenrir Duo and it works great and it’s less money than the terraonion…but you can’t use it with the Dreamcast! These things are so cool
Thanks for the walkthrough. I was thinking of skipping the Mode because I didn’t want to remove the whole disc laser assembly. But you made it look pretty simple and maybe easy to put back later too. Thanks!
What was the extra cord that you connected to the power supply?
In the original video Terraonion did, they explained some Saturn systems need a little extra power to power that part on. Mine didn't, but some might.
It's mostly for hard drive power, namely mechanical ones because they use more juice. If you run your games off of a Micro SD card, USB stick or most SSDs, the supplemental power cable won't be needed.

Cool, if my Saturn wasn't already modded to play burned cds I would totally buy this, but after shipping it looks like this would cost me over $300 Cad :( I'm good with burned discs for now.

ooh, good idea! I'm sure it can if it just uses the disc image. I loved the NES emulator since it had speed up, slow down and game genie.
I’ve been having issues with mines since I got it. Capcom games crash after the logo, sports games freeze, and no Japanese roms will load….it’s weird
Does the beharbros akura work with the Sega Saturn or does it use a different port. Compared to the Dreamcast?
Riggs playing the pronoun game with that random connector. Does it power the board? What does it do? I didn't catch any explanation for it's existence other than it's there, so you flip a switch! Still, it's a good video, and if I had a Sega Saturn I'd totally do this!
Maybe I'll see if it's worth it to mod my stepdad's Saturn.

I thought about getting this but I honestly have enough Saturn games in my collection already (mostly japanese since they are usually cheaper) to just skip out on this.
Got mine, loaded it with games, installed it in my Saturn, and says “no valid storage device found.” I forgot to make sure it was formatted properly. SIGH.
I’m still waiting for mine 😭 and I regret not getting one for my Dreamcast

I have one and like it just fine. It's big and bulky so I keep it in the closet and plug it in when I need to use it.

@JohnRiggs I have a Seag Dreamcast that works perfectly fine, although the only thing that doesn't work on my Dreamast is the drive/lens won't read any games. If I swapped the disc drive out like you did and replaced it with a TerraOnion, it should work still...correct? Also, how much does a TerraOnion cost?
Correct, my Saturn didn't have a working disk drive so it was no problems here. The device is about $200 - the same price as many Saturn games.

Is it available for 2nd gen Japanese saturn?
When extracting the zipped gdi files, there are alot of "Track" files that appear. Do I need those to to be in the folder I created for the game as well.? Or do I only need the .bin files.?

Lord knows why, because Terronion have them in stock on their website for €182. Ebayers trying to lure in idiots, I suppose.
They're in stock and only $200 from Terraonion. They just take a couple of weeks to process your order, so scalpers put theirs in Ebay to try and lure people who have no patience with faster shipping.
If you have a 20-pin Model 1 Saturn, you can save yourself £100 by buying a Fenrir. 😉

i hate the mode, it has a horrible design, very awkward usb and micro sd slot positions, it gets in the way of the cartridge slot, a lot of work to install, taking out the cd assembly pillars, and all they give you to hold it down then is pathetic double sided tape!? and the position of the usb slot is too close to the board which means most usb drives won't connect and you need to buy a usb port extender, then after all that it is very bloody awkward to attach and reattach drives to it
While I love that people are making this stuff - at 182 euro I am gonna stick with emulation haha too spicey for me, but amazing for SS fans that want original hardware.

I just can't bring myself to tear out a perfectly working disc drive (especially one as sturdy as the Saturn's) just for some added convenience.
Dreamcast though? that cd drive is garbage, tear it out!
Mine didn't have a working drive so I didn't mind. and I'm keeping my original Saturn in tact.
