    How are things in the Canadian motor (auto?) insurance market re general levels of profitability (including investment income)? I’m a UK personal lines actuary with a lot of experience in motor insurance - and over here the motor insurance market can be an absolute bloodbath. Viciously competitive. Some thrive - either through volume (economies of scale & better statistics) or through expertise in a particular niche - but there’s an awkward middle ground between the two where competitive pressures can make it extremely difficult to keep one’s head above water. I’d be interested to learn a bit more about how Canada compares to the UK.

    • @Javigarcia222
      @Javigarcia222 4 года назад

      Same here is Spain,extremely competitive LoB, most companies selling at a loss( direct channel) and impossible to keep the war price for long xD . I think that other lines must be explored

      @Actuaryelle  4 года назад

      There were a few years of really high combined ratios, but starting last year, some companies are seeing them go down. In 2019 and 2020, some companies (definitely not all companies) started seeing personal auto combined ratios below 100%, which is a nice place to be.
      In most provinces, auto insurance is heavily regulated, so we can't just change prices at will. Because of this, we can't be as competitive / responsive to other companies' rate changes. Pre-covid, the auto insurance market in Canada was a very hard market - large rate increases across, tight underwriting rules, etc.

    Hi! As a pricing actuary from other country I have some questions for you haha:
    As a pricing actuary what are your daily tasks?
    Are you closer to the business or to the technical side?
    How much time you spend daily with the datasets(preparing sas codes,cleaning,filtering...) ?
    Have you ever built a model(risk/loss cost)from the beginning or that belongs to data scientists?
    How are prices for the Rn built there? I mean apart from updating the risk do you do anything else? Because I know that you arent able to use demand models( retention/negotiariln models)
    Thanks! :)

    • @Actuaryelle
      @Actuaryelle  4 года назад +1

      Those are big questions that I won't be able to answer in a comment!
      My daily tasks vary greatly from project to project. I'd say I spend more time doing technical work, but am also responsible for liaising back with the business.
      I spend a good amount of time working on SAS, but it depends on the project, and how much I'm willing to delegate (I like doing my own work - it's a bad habit)
      Modeling is done in joint-functional teams with both actuaries and data scientists. I haven't personally done the modeling, but part of my job is to review model outputs and make sure they make sense.
      What is "Rn"? I'm not familiar with the abbreviation, sorry.

    Hi Elle, Do you think the Loss Ratio should be Claims divided by Earned Premium without expenses? Because in most comapnies, the premium (NEP) includes charges. I think that the denominator should be Earned Premium Without Expenses (kind of Pure Premium sold to the insured)
