I struggle so much with my ADHD. I'll end up going weeks without drawing, then suddenly hyper fixated on drawing non-stop. Would love to see more tips on dealing with this cuz lately I tend to get mad at myself even though I know I shouldn't 😅

What timing for this video! I'm trying to finally get help for my suspected ADHD, like I would totally relate with those posts online and with my friends that were officially diagnosed. It's just difficult to find affordable treatments and therapy right now, but to have the chance to figure out why life feels so different and difficult than others must be worth it.

  • @LucarioBoricua

I want to share my experience as a suspected / possible ADHDer, as I'm currently waiting for an evaluation and possible diagnosis. Back in the day, my parents refused to get me a formal diagnosis for whatever BS reason they had, even though I was screened for the condition in the form of hyperactivity.
I will say that my inconsistency with visual art and other creative pastimes is one of the main reasons for which I suspect ADHD in myself. I know I'm a decently skilled artist, but have to very deliberately set myself up to do it (often unsuccessfully), often rely on external sources of motivation: body doubling, doing art for some greater purpose, others establishing inflexible deadlines, using art as a medium to communicate in other situations.
Strategies I use to facilitate visual art:
    - If I feel my mood for visual art is starting to form, I'll unpack and organize my art supplies to have them accessible and ready to go. This reduces the effort barrier to do art, such that it's possible to actually do art rather than losing momentum preparing the supplies
    - I embrace the inconsistent progression with my pieces, by having an abundance of sketches to have available ideas to get to. This also helps reduce the burden of formulating a new idea and losing momentum with that step.
    - I set up myself for hyperfocus art sessions, with drinking water and snacks within reach to stay several hours doing my thing without having to pull myself out of the session.
    - I challenge perfectionism by using an iterative method, I will do the same subject a few times from the start to make sure that I reach a desired outcome, rather than staying suck in frustration with a first attempt that doesn't match my vision for the piece.
    - If I have time off, I'll try to do the art earlier in the day. I notice that, ever since I went through burnout from my master's degree studies, my energy levels dip considerably around the late afternoon and evening. Doing art earlier avoids this period, though it's not always feasible to pull off. I am working on improving sleep habits to mitigate this.
    Struggles I still have:
    - Perfectionism, as I have a vivid imagination and a trained art eye to recognize how I want the outcome to look like. This often means I attach myself rigidly to the conception of my art ideas, and feel disappointed when the result is nowhere close to my desired outcome. This also makes it more difficult to attempt drawing unfamiliar subjects, even when using reference material.
    - Disproportionately high ambition in the scale and complexity of my pieces versus the pace I actually can perform to create them. This often sets me up for failure through impatience with myself. I often feel bad about my artwork because it takes me so long to create it in the first place. When resolving this, I usually concede more towards making the piece elaborate, rather than simplifying my style to complete them in a shorter time frame.
    - Difficulties with gross motor skills, which can be related to a head injury during my childhood, or to developmental coordination disorder / dyspraxia (a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting coordination, strength, balance and motor skills). This has affected my ability to do simple and clean lines on a minimum number of attempts, so I've generally gravitated towards more textural drawings: shading, cross-hatching, jagged edges, smaller intricate details.
    - Privacy affects me, due to many of the subjects I develop in my artwork.
    - I have a really busy life, between family, full-time work, being involved in creative projects from multiple friends, and activism. Separating time for art requires saying 'no' to an awful lot of other things, so it often doesn't happen.

I don’t have ADHD and am just a lazy individual but (especially for traditional art)
Is getting the supplies out while your up and about and leave it there if you can so when creativity hits you don’t have to go through everything looking for supplies.
I also did this while studying- left my study stuff near or on my desk so
-I didn’t lose anything ( because the amount of paper was unreal and even then I ended up temporarily losing some things)
    - And the aforementioned ease of access
Dunno how helpful this would be to ADHD people as I know it’s mostly the demographic for this video but maybe for others this will help!

yup! it's great to keep everything you need nearby so you don't have to get things out and set up every time. depends on having a good space for that, but usually drawing things don't take up a lot. :3

Should I watch this video when RUclips first notifies me?
Nah, I'll save it for tomorrow....
In all seriousness, though, distractions are why I haven't created much art in ... years?
This month I decided to start one of those "draw every day" challenges. Assembled my own list of prompts (one for each day) and ... well, it's not off to a good start. I completely missed Tuesday, for example. What I have produced so far aren't refined drawings in any sense, mostly just rough design sketches. But one of my "rules" is don't "fall behind", as in if I miss a day don't even _think_ about going back to make up for it (at least until I've satisfied the prompt for today), focus each day on its own.
I'm not new to art challenges -- I do a Nanowrimo every November (and always manage to somehow make it to the goal line, regardless of what happens inbetween or whether I like/hate what comes out in writing) and this month is still young.

I'm diagnoused with GAD but I still can see the simularities. While it isn't so much a attetionspan problem, anxiety and strong emotions usually has the potential to stop me from drawing. And a mountain of self dought on top of that.
But some strong medication later and I a little more leveled and are constantly finding new tools make living easier or funnier.
Btw the motion-capture on your fursona is crazy good. Great video as a whole.

I dont have ADHD but I do have autism. I dont procrastinate as much as I get into a routine of... not doing things.
Naturally, its not exactly routine to make art every day. Much easier to get into a routine of just watching youtube every day... all day... Used to be minecraft when I was a kid but these days its just clicking video after video. Ive found I can help reduce it a little by using a chrome plugin to remove all the thumbnails but its not always effective.
But if I do get into a different routine, I will always do it. Get a mental barrier for not doing it, which is why im stuck in this youtube loop. So I know what the goal is, just never really get around to achieving said goal. But hey im confident that once I do sort of figure out how to get myself into a productive routine ill do a lot. That's the give and take with these kinds of mental conditions.
Basically while people with ADHD get hyper focused at specific things for a small time, I get hyper focused on specific things for a LONG time. So naturally I get intimidated when starting things because I know when I get sucked in, I GET SUCKED IN. and its all I can think about until that project is finished.
Luckily I dont need medication for it, I can cope with all this just fine without medication. But of course, some people do need medication, and that's ok. Doesnt make you weak or anything like that.

I have times where I can draw, but it gets interrupted by my mom or somebody else for whatever reason. I don't deal with my emotions when this happens, so I loose my control and talk directly, but I can't.
And sums up with the distractions on RUclips instead of focusing on the practice.

I don't know how to draw (I'd like to learn though) but I do write and I know the struggle of it. Sometimes, I think about the story I'll write and, when I'm in front of the computer I just do anything but writing. Or I'll just write a sentence and simply go blank afterwards

    • @Stratelier
      @Stratelier 10 дней назад

Drawing and writing are quite similar, actually!
One of the key parts is that there are different types / several stages of each process from start to completion, and the stages are actually super comparable.
For example, for writing you might start by jotting down a quick premise of what you want "the story" to be, maybe assemble a list or outline of notable things that happen. The drawing equivalent is the concept sketch, something doodled to get the idea out of your head, and actually onto paper as quickly and as rough as possible.
Ultimately, though, you can never learn how to do something you never _actually attempt._ (I hear there's a video where known youtuber PewDiePie tried to "learn how to draw" in 30 days ... then again but with 100 days. I haven't seen it myself, but I hear the end result is legit impressive)

"ADHD is the power of speed and multitasking at its finest. The cons of it is that you can't focus on only one task. But ADHD is like you are trying to do all work necessary and urgent on first place, one by one, bit by bit in a multitask manner until you stabilize the time and work to keep a balance on the work you have already done and the work you still have to do. It's like you're trying to catch up with the time itself, just for having a lil' bit of time for your dreams and the things you really want to do and you have to do, in order to never lose them." (9EYI and ColdLegend-978)
And yes, in video games be careful with your energy levels flowing. Play the games you love, but with a normal behaviour. Be careful and don't let energy adrenaline rushing or overflowing. You will go nuts in your game after the energy overflow. And avoid playing some games like Combat Master and Rolling Thunder (Roblox) and other adrenaline overflowing games for too much, as an example. I reccomend only 2 hours of playtime up to maximum 4 hours a day for adrenaline rushing games. If you exceed this time, you're risking your health. You matter more than your games and your health matters too.

As someone who struggles with ADHD and only recently got a meds for it, I can definitely appreciate learning skills to cope with one’s shortcomings. I’ve been wanting to pursue more creative endeavors and I find your advice quite helpful~ ^w^
