Bret was an artist and the ring his canvas! He painted many pictures and stories in the ring. He invented the figure four around the ring post, he was first in the wwf to go through a table and give it meaning, not like Sabu who breaks them for the sake of breaking a table. He brought the ladder match to the WWF. His finish to the Austin match at Mania 13 was brilliant. His entire night at King of the ring 1993 told stories over three matches! I honestly think he was the best at telling stories in the ring! Anyone who can't see it, knows nothing about story telling and in ring psychology! Oh and no one hits the turnbuckle like Bret!

I have always loved this match myself but your analysis of it and showing the subtle yet effective psychology is just brilliant
Loved how Piper wanted to help out up and coming talent considering how high up he was. You never got that from Hogan or Warrior which tells you alot about who had real class in a cut throat industry
Never understood the flack that Bret gets for his promos, yes he wasn't Roddy or Savage or SCSA but he had his own no nonsense style and for me it worked. Guess it's like marmite
92 was definitely Brets year as this would have been the match of the year if it wasn't for Bulldog at Wembley
Piper will always be a legend in a league of his own for his promos alone. Always loved how he carried himself in what seems a ferocious business and to do what he did here, pure class

Took a few pictures and he put his arm around me and said I wrestled Andre the Giant 1,000 times. He was so great to talk to.

I miss Roddy. Met him once. He was intense but so friendly. Lovely bloke and one of the most underrated wrestlers.

Love this match. I go back every once in a while to watch it. Piper looked great too. Piper himself said they have a cousin in common which isn't much thicker than water but a wee bit. I guess you could be right

Do these for every single feud you can think of, and find feuds you dont and learn them!! Your completionist tendencies make these amazing to watch and remember. You leave nothing out.....simply amazing. WWE should take your videos and commentary, insert the full interviews / matches and make a program out of it.....would be killer to have individual feuds done like that.....Amazing work

WWF came out with a Coliseum release in probably 1995 or so Best of WrestleMania. This match was on that tape and I absolutely fell in love with it. I remember in Bret's book he talked about the color coming from a bump to the outside steps, but I'm glad you highlighted that. I love your channel my man.

IKR because Piper isn’t really in the game and that would’ve been the perfect spot for it and that match just seems like it would fit the cutscenes perfectly

Great video. Contrary to popular belief Roddy Piper was in fact pinned in a match before Wrestlemania 8. I remember renting an old Coliseum video tape that had a Fijian Strap match between Piper and Snuka, that had pitfalls in it. Snuka beat Piper via pinfall in that match.

One of the greatest IC title matches and one of the most underrated Wrestlemania matches. This is a classic that will only stand the test of time and never age. Peak storytelling, work rate, emotion, action, and blood during the Hogan era!!!! This is a master class of a match by two of the best of all time.

Someone covered this match in a video about Professional Wrestling that I watched, it may have been EmpLemon or Super Eyepatch Wolf (Not here to advertise them) But they made a point how Roddy realized Bret was outdoing him and he had to play dirty, then he raised the bell to the cascade of booing that made him realize he shouldn't do it this way. So, he tossed it aside and fought the rest of the match as he should have. Was great storytelling. Glad you covered this match too, it's one I always want to see more on due to the story told in the ring!

At that point in time, the IC title matches were usually the spotlight of the show. Think of some of the names around it: Warrior, Rude, Perfect, Texas Tornado, Hart, Mountie, Piper, Bulldog, and eventually leading to the HBK/Hall/Rock/Angle era. Lots of epic stories built around these matches.

I've often found, especially the further back you go, the IC matches are better than the WWF/E matches.

Whenever the Hitman's in the ring, one thing that makes him worthy of the phrase, "the best there is, was and ever will be" is that you can always go back to his matches and can still be connected to it. It always had stories that can make you celebrate with him and feel victory as well, you can even feel sorry for him, lose with him, worry for him, love or even hate his character but you can still say wow, this was a great match! As well as made it look good not only for him but also for the wrestler he's with in the ring. That's what makes the Hitman standout and is still loved by his fans to this day.

great video. There's no doubting the athleticism of today's wrestlers but I think matches like this show how important storytelling is and how much it's lacking in the current product.

6:26, That particular house show where Bret dropped the title to Rougeau was actually on January 17th in Springfield Massachusetts, The '92 Rumble was two days later on the 19th.

You know, the way Piper and Bret respected and cared for each other is truly an awesome factor that made the match great. The last quotes from each one made me fight back a few tears from my eyes for a bit.
Also, the narration by Gorilla and the Brain made it great, as usual. "To all of these people, they're both champions!"
You should do a video of Savage v Flair next as a sequel. I feel that both matches are in contention for the best match of Wrestlemania VII.
