I agree with most of these, but icecrown is amazing for the same reason deadwind pass is pretty high. From a lore and game design perspective it was absolutely well done, you felt the despair and danger of the situation the world was in through gameplay and visual design

Icecrown was trash. A pain in the ass to navigate, even with flying mounts somehow. A few decent questlines but doing the questchains themselves felt like a chore and they were overtuned, ya the place was pretty depressing but that doesn't mean much. It was pretty scary and ICC was definitely an imposing figure in the middle of the zone, but tbh the only good thing about Icecrown was the tournament.
Also, deadwind pass is bottom tier F/Awful trash.

My most amazing and memorable moment in the game was the first time I sailed into Howling Fjord. The music was that haunting whaler instrumental. You could hear the grinding crunch of the snow pack glaciers. I stood in the bow as the ship navigated between the high cliffs of that narrow channel. There were monsters flying up above, danger in the deeps, a forbidding keep, and up ahead...safe harbor, rustic but sturdy and the NPC clad in friendly, familiar armor.

So while I understand why Dun Morogh was placed where it was, as someone whos first character back in the tail end of TBC / start of Wrath was a dwarf paladin there's a certain nostalgia factor for sure, but here's why the zone deserves to be considered 'great' (at least from my perspective).
Coldridge valley, compared to the other starting zones, was fairly large, I think the only one bigger than it is Shadowglen, but despite the size, because Dun Morogh is snow capped mountains, leaving the starting area of coldridge by going through a path between two hills / cliffs felt completely natural. Shadowglenn and Northshire had the same exits but because they were both forest it felt clear that "you're no longer in the starting area, welcome to the rest of the game" where coldridge didn't have that feeling.
I remember playing for hours before I even made it to Ironforge for the first time and walking up the mountain path to the impressive walkway leading into the city, to be greeted by a canal of lava and seeing the great forge for the first time it was fucking awesome. I think I spent a day and a half of playing just in dun morogh thinking "this is it, this is the game, snow capped mountains and frost trolls, cities built into mountains" and then I was told to venture outward to Loch Modan. Unlike going from Teldrassil to Darkshore, where the enviroment is basically the same, or Elwynn to Westfall where you can see the new zone on the horizon, Dun Morogh is a valley that's basically a bowl. I remember walking through the tunnel to Loch for the first time, expecting to see more snow and ridges on the other side, but was greeted by grass and a lake that wasn't frozen over.
Were the quest the most exciting thing? Not by a long shot, but the entire experience of coming into this game, with no idea of what you would see or what to expect, being in a frozen valley for the first 10+ hours of playing, being introduced to the frost trolls, helping out the gnomes around their fallen city, having a the dwarf home city lacking true "gates" like stormwind & darnassus had, instead it's just built into a mountain. And then by the end of what felt like an adventure in and of itself where you're just helping your fellow dwarves & gnomes, you get lead through a tunnel and don't even experience grass until you're through to the other side.
Does it hold up to be a great / amazing zone without the nostalgia drug? Nope. Even now going back and replaying that zone, it will never be the same as the first time. However, that first playthrough, the way it was just so unique compared to the other starting zones at the time, that's what makes Dun Morogh special.

If you look at Sholazar Basin as an individual zone its fine but it doesn't fit the Northrend mood. It's like a tropical jungle in the midle of North Pole. A litle bit of diversity is good but it's such a huge contrast. That's why I don't like it. I rate it BAD otherwise GREAT.

I mean, Zul Drak is literal first zone where you could see the true horrors of the Scourge, their malevolent tactics, epic tribal soundtrack, desperate deranged trolls sacrificing their gods for modicum of chance to fight off Scourge, Scourge flying fortress brought down, Loa destroying itself to avoid being sacrificed and overall fallen troll empire.

So glad to see Scholazar Basis get recognition. I think it is one of the most interesting questing zones of all time. It's got the titan pillars giving it the warm tropical rain forest climate despite being in northrend. It has the cult destroying one pillar allowing the icecrown weather and undead to break in. The weremurloc vs weredog civil war. And a Hemet Nesingwary chain. And it's an above average looking zone of all the wilderness zone's they've done. High concept, high execution. It doesn't get much better than that. The only thing it fell short on was music.

I didn’t play that much on WoW , i played the demo in 2004 as a troll and didn’t play again until WoD as a Tauren warrior most of the time and stopped playing after it ended , and the best memory i have from that period is when i played in Ashran vs alliance and man i was leading maybe a 100 horde players through raid messages and giving them orders like a general and they followed me until we won i was yelling at them all the time to motivate them when the final push was happening like “FOR THE HORDE” and “FOR DEATH OR GLORY WE WILL BE VICTORIOUS “ “FORWARD “ “DONT STOP AT ANY COST” and the more i send messages like these they became more nd more ferocious and we kept pushing i was in the frontline as a tauren fury warrior named GURZYL and man after we won i had to go and all the horde players begged me to stay for one more and were in love with me because i was a great leader and they felt like they were in a real war vs the alliance because the roleplay i added to my strategies, it was the most heartwarming and thrilling experience in my life playing wow for that short time, i will never forget it I’m sad that i didn’t have a recorded video of it.

Point with certain areas of vashj'ir is our humane fear of depths and "prehistoric creatures going around every corner" and the fact that it was mostly all grey and you were very near the imsta death fall out of world. Made every movement a damn gamble...
Had to do navigate through it in some glitched parts of it on my scuffed bfa private seever where your character and half the terrain disappeared and all. And the fact that i hated depths as a kid ( fucking semi realistic images of damn sea dinosaurs made me fear that too much) and vashj'ir enbodied that for me

The fact he didnt rate the hinterlands as an amazing zone is a shame.
really was the best mid 40’s - 50 zone. It gave you a trinket for 1% hit 20 attack power. Molten core didn’t have a trinket that good. You didn’t take that off until you were sure you had enough melee hit. Hit was a rare commodity until later tiers.
It gave a fantastic necklace, woven ivy necklace, with 10 strength, 9 stam, and 6 agility (I think) that could be used until you did tirion’s questline.
As a horde player, you went into an alliance base and put up a big ol “fuck you” sign to the alliance, and then had to make a last ditch getaway when all the guards would chase after you.
You had the altar of zul to give you the mallet for zul farrak to summon gahzranka for your carrot on a stick, the best questing trinket ever made. 3% mounted movement speed.
The turtle questline from revantusk gave you a +20 fishing pole, and fishing back then was essential for an alchemist. That +20 rod would never need to be replaced if you couldn’t do the fishing tournament.
Also, world boss green dragon ysondre over in the northeast.
He really did that zone dirty with just a good rating.

im sO happy im not the only one who thinks that of vashjir. i think it was the best high level cataclysm zone. great scenery, sometimes silly but also serious and interesting storyline, not super grindy quests but not necessarily too simple of quests, it was expansive and i liked the mobility it gave you once you got the seahorse because like yeah, you can fly in any zone, but because vashjir is underwater and underwater has a lot of dips and towers and plants, theres just more things to traverse in that extra y axis. I would probably think the same of a zone that was just that but a cloud city zone, but that wouldnt even come CLOSE to matching the scenery of vashjir. The scenery really sells it. Bright exotic sea plants but soft green sea grasses and kelp filler, a big bright red expanse, and a deep and dreary colored but still poppingly colored part thats supposed to be an abyss. a giant sea creature that is literally apart of the zone? amazing. beautiful.
