UPDATE: I have since switched to Zoom for online lessons (Zoom really rose to the occasion during the pandemic, and Skype totally dropped the ball) due to the better audio options they have created for musicians. I have also advanced my setup to allow for simultaneous multiple camera angles using the ATEM Mini. I have posted a full tutorial about that here: ruclips.net/video/te_WlNiR_yk/видео.html
I wish all of you the best health and safety during this time of uncertainty and quarantining with COVID-19. I hope you're able to continue your piano lessons online with these 15 tips. I wish you all the best for a great week of practicing!
hi guys, the greatest results that I have ever had was by following the Turbo Piano Secret (just google it) without a doubt the best system that I have ever tried.
Appreciate Video! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you tried - Renndrew Volleyball Victimless (should be on google have a look)? It is an awesome one off product for uncovering the simple trick to master the piano minus the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my m8 at very last got astronomical success with it.
If you are interested in playing piano the greatest success that i've ever had was with the Turbo Piano Secret (i found it on google) definately the no.1 plan i've tried.
THANK YOU!!! I'm a parent of 13 year old student needing to assist our beloved piano teacher to move her livelihood online and you are SO gracious to take you time to HELP all of us! God bless you!

Love that intro!! The advantage of Zoom, which I have used for a few weeks now, is it gives you greater audio control than Skype I think. Zoom allows you to both enable the original sound and disable the background noise suppression controls in the Audio Settings. Makes the reproduction better for music lessons.
Very timely contents! Several students of mine already asked for online lessons already. I like to use Zoom for lessons. Very interesting time to learn this skill indeed. Thank you for your tips!
Thank you, Josh for posting this. I am one of the many piano teachers having to transition to online learning due to the circumstances. Your videos were extremely helpful and so far, we are having success in the transition, but always looking for ways to improve.
One other IMPORTANT tip I forgot to mention: Don't blast the volume on your speakers. This can cause weird feedback to occur, especially if you're not using an external microphone. What ends up happening is your speakers end up feeding back into your internal microphone, and you get this wavy, submerged sound that is really annoying. Keep your volume at a level that you can still hear what is going on, but not too loud. Make sure your student or teacher does the same thing on the other end. Another way to mitigate this is to use headphones, as mentioned in the video. I hope that helps!
Thank you so much Josh, I was searching all day for this kind of information as wasn’t sure about the technical setup! You are a great presenter and really kind to share these tips, thank you!
Thanks Josh. We met last October at the festival near Sundance. I never planned to do any online teaching until these past few weeks with the present circumstances and my university, like most others, has moved to all remote teaching. I was looking for technical help and came across the useful tips in your video. I wish you all the best.
Thanks so much, Josh. I've been meaning to go back and look for your previous video on this to send to my daughter, who is suddenly a Skype violin/viola teacher! All her friends who only do live gigs are really suffering right now, so she is grateful to have students already. I've been teaching via Skype for about a year since a move. It's not perfect, especially for very young students, but overall it works very well.
Thank you so much for your very generous advice and tips. Yes, I am moving my entire studio to Skype in response to Covid-19. I may email you in the next few weeks. Can't thank you enough for sharing!!!
Great tips! I mainly teach guitar, and so far, all of my online students are guitarists. With the self-quarantining, many of my local students are opting for Skype lessons, even when they only live 15 minutes away. This means that some of my online students are also piano students, at least for a few weeks. With guitar, I always use headphones, otherwise I start getting a feedback loop. One drawback for online students is that you can't play or sing with them at the same time because of the lag. Aside from that, I think my students and I both enjoy the convenience of remote lessons.
Honestly, thanks for the help!! I've been teaching for almost 9 years but just now was forced into online lessons. Your $10 DIY horizontal camera mount saved my life! $8.71 for all the materials at local Hardware Store. plus the drill needed.
Very useful, I’m both pianist, following your channel and as a (partly music )librarian giving courses ‘safe internet’ and how to ‘arrange things with the digital government’ from the library in Rotterdam , Netherlands, that is closed now because of the virus. Also considering streaming video from Facebook to give reading tips to customers. And more time for practicing piano staying home.
Hi Josh, I need your help plz. I'm a Vocal Teacher from ''Cherry's Vocal Studio'' Sydney. When I teach Online the students can't hear Piano sound when they start singing with, when not singing then they can hear the Piano Notes. Is any device that could be connected with Piano & Laptop, so that they could hear Piano Sound through Laptop during singing practice too? Plz guide.
Thx for this Josh, really helpful. A piano teacher, I'm on the verge of giving this a go. I can see that the Mac on the desk provides both the camera (for the student's view) and also a largish screen for you to see the student. Is it possible to switch during the lesson to give the student an overhead view of the piano: from time to time: have two camera inputs? I think you are quite right that we want to see the person we are communicating with (hence the waist up image), but at times I can see it may be helpful to show an overhead view.
Hey Josh. Thank you for this. The future for all of you as academics in online my friend. Look into Nebula, Skillshare and even into PragerU. You can have all sorts of students of all ages
Konstantinos Konst thanks Konstantinos. I already have many online courses on Teachable at JoshWrightPiano.Teachable.com with over 4500 students enrolled :) Have a great week!
Hi Josh, thank you for your tips. Maybe try Zoom and activate "original audio" in the advanced audio settings. If you didn't have that activated it probably sounded bad with the parameters Zoom decided to activate since it's optimized for speech out of the box. I have tried it with the original audio and it takes dynamics better than Skype. Cheers!
have you heard about multiplayerpiano.com? you can plug in your digital piano and get the midi playback in a online lobby. it has that "synthesia" look and shows you which keys are being played if the students mic quality isnt good you can at least see it instead of trying to hear it.
Very useful to share! There is a problem that skpye cannot be used on ios in mainland China at present, which may need another solution. Or do we have to be flexible for students from different regions?
Yifan Li oh interesting. I didn’t know that. Other conferencing softwares should be okay, but I’ve noticed, just in my personal experience, that I like the audio from Skype the best. Feel free to post here in the comments if you find a good solution for mainland China
Hi Josh! Could you recommend some etudes I could learn to develop the technique required for Mozart’s Sonata K 545? Thank you so much for everything you do!
Have you tried Zoom's "preserve original sound" option (support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/115003279466-Preserve-Original-Sound)? The option turns off all software "audio enhancement," uses your raw microphone input, and forces Zoom to use a slightly higher audio bit rate of roughly 120 kbps. With external mics, using original sound on Zoom achieves superior audio quality to, say, Skype: natural reverb from the instrument is no longer clipped or cut out. Toggling "automatically adjust volume" also allows you to preserve the original dynamic range. To my knowledge, no other major app allows you to bypass the built-in software audio processing, which is useful for speaking but is poor for music lessons.
Hi Josh, Thanks so much for this video. Lots of helpful suggestions. Could you share the gear you use if you DO want to have a top-down angle for a camera? Do you use a boom stand for that? Thanks.
What are your thoughts on teaching piano on a keyboard? Where I live, WiFi isn't the greatest, so online lessons wouldn't work. Some of my students live too far away to teach at my home, and since there's a handful of them, we decided to take lessons in a neutral location, about 15 minutes away on my end. There is a keyboard over there. It is pretty high quality, but hearing you talk about projection makes me a little bit worried about that. Would teaching on a keyboard still be feasible and workable? What are everyone's thoughts on this?
Ogany Supreme my thoughts are to always use the best instrument available to you, so if that is what’s available, it’s so much better than stopping lessons altogether. Wishing you all the best!
Great video! I'm a student with an upright Yamaha doing Skype lessons with my piano teacher for now. Do you recommend having the top open, and where do you recommend I place the mic? Still at 90-degrees on the treble side? Thank you so much!
jskuan03 thanks! Yes, I would still recommend that mic placement. You can experiment open/closed to see what your teacher prefers for the space that you’re in :)
Interesting video thank you! My main problem is the time lag between myself and the student. I like to accompany my students or count with them but the time lag makes this impossible! How do I eliminate the time lag please?
Thank you Josh. This is very helpful. Do you recommend Skype for group classes(up to 8 students)? Does it have the same functions(mute, hide image etc..) as zoom? Thank you!
Josh, hey from London, UK!!! Hope you are well and thanks so much for the fantastic videos as always.... I just got a Boya BYM1DM lavalier mic that I wanted to use initially with my iPhone 6, but when I plug it in directly to the headphone port it cuts the sound out. Maybe I have to use headphones? But I’m trying to use it without headphones, so maybe I need an adaptor? Keep up the excellent work. All best Tim
Josh thank you very much for all these tips. One question as I start to set up for online things.. I want to get a webcam for over the piano.. There is logitech C920 and C930e which has a digital zoom and some other features. I wonder what you think is great for over the piano. I have a mike sand with a boom
Thank you so much Josh! I took a lesson with you a couple years ago and loved it. Now, during this crisis, I have taken my studio online and am so grateful for your tips. Stay healthy!
Hi, Josh. This was a most useful video for me! Just wanted to ask you, in light of recent developments (Zoom's "original sound" feature and platforms such as Rock out Loud Live, created specifically for music lessons and focused on sound quality), do you still prefer Skype for online lessons?
Hi again Josh, one more question.. I wonder if you use multicam and what hub you use for that that you find is compatible with your mike and ipad and cameras?
I normally do in person lessons and I'm horrible at tech stuff, but the pandemic has resulted in me trying Skype lessons online. It works to a degree but the sound is terrible. The student's pianos sound like they're underwater, with only a few notes coming out of each bar and sounding really out of tune and ear piercing with the higher register notes. The students say my piano sounds the same. I'm just using a relatively old Windows 8 laptop with the built in mic and speaker. Is this kind of thing normal? I can talk with them fine, but the sound of the piano is the problem, though it is still possible to do the lesson.
Thank you Josh, well done and extremely helpful. One quick question: I was able to connect a very good pair of external mics to my iPad Pro (2018) and use it with Zoom, but the sound was not improved at all (pretty awful). I tried to use both FaceTime and Skype instead, but neither picked up the external mic. Both FT and Skype apps on the iPad do not seem to allow choice of mic (they only relate to native mic). Is there a way around it? A Blue Yeti mic is on the way but I have a feeling I will run into the same problem. Any advice from anybody appreciated! Btw, in my case both FT and Skype (with native mic) gave better sound than Zoom w/great external mic. Perhaps due to concurrent overuse of Zoom? Thanks again!
Thanks Josh - I'm a piano teacher in the UK. I've just finished my third week of 100 percent online studio lessons with Skype. I watched this video back a couple of weeks ago but was so stressed I could hardly take anything in. Now I know that Skype lessons do work and I am still going to have an income, I've watched it again in a calmer frame of mind. It is most helpful and generous of you - thank you very much. I'm going to start refining what I do now. One question - does Skype somehow mess with the sound of the piano because it is optimised for voices? If so, is there a way of changing this? I'm not that tech geeky - hope you know what I mean. Sometimes it sounds like my students are playing under water - even when not playing quietly as you point out. Thank you. Annie x
Helpful video, Josh. I am using “ICE” globe microphone and even though students can hear me well talking and I can hear them, when we they or I being to play, it sounds like it is under water. Do you think this is a microphone problem or computer? I use Zoom for lessons. Thanks!
Elena Victoria I go over this in the video. Try adjusting the placement of your mic and play around with the “automatically adjust volume” setting within skype
Have you ever had any payment issues with students where you get scammed? Do they pay before you start? What would you say is the absolute needed if your barely starting and don’t have money ? Microphone and iPad?
This is amazing! Thank you so much! Many students want to see the actual finger position though and for that an overhead view would need to be necessary, for instance for inversions, do you find that your setup is enough for this? Absolutely love the video and your setup is amazing 😍🎵
Cheers for the Video! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you thought about - Riddleagan Possessing Piano Remedy (search on google)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for learning how to play the piano easily without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my cooworker at very last got astronomical results with it.

Thank you. Annie x
The Wandering Weave Hi Annie, i’m in the UK and I want to teach music as well. Can you give me some tips maybe via email ? Cheers! Don x
If I get the Blue yeti mic and my students don't have one will I still hear them any better?
hey josh, do you think a macbook air would suffice?

Have you ever had any payment issues with students where you get scammed? Do they pay before you start?
What would you say is the absolute needed if your barely starting and don’t have money ?
Microphone and iPad?
And thank you your awesome josh!!!
Thanks for the tips! Question - do both student/teacher need an Ethernet cable connection?
This is amazing! Thank you so much! Many students want to see the actual finger position though and for that an overhead view would need to be necessary, for instance for inversions, do you find that your setup is enough for this? Absolutely love the video and your setup is amazing 😍🎵
After trying for years to play piano I discovered Denelle Piano Lesson and it seems to be the best home study system (google it if you're interested)

10:35 Yo any discord fans out there?
I was going to suggest Discord too! I haven't been using Skype since years now.
I think this whole coronavirus thing is a bunch of hullabaloo. But thank you for the information and advice! Very helpful
it's not
Well, in our country they don't close schools as the government says that everything is under control while in fact it isn't...
which country is this?
Josh, hey from London, UK!!! Hope you are well and thanks so much for the fantastic videos as always....
I just got a Boya BYM1DM lavalier mic that I wanted to use initially with my iPhone 6, but when I plug it in directly to the headphone port it cuts the sound out. Maybe I have to use headphones? But I’m trying to use it without headphones, so maybe I need an adaptor? Keep up the excellent work.
All best
Tim
