I think the last two videos that The Bass Gang has put out, Skull and Bones and If I Had a Heart, both have really hit the mark for their voices. The arrangements have been spot-on, and the songs really fit them well!
Since I love pirate lore, Davy Jones is the mythical evil spirit of the sea, a ghostly harbinger of danger. He perches on the tops of masts just before a hurricane or where there has been a shipwreck. It's unknown where the name comes from. There are dozens of explanations: a sailor named David Jones who had bad eyesight and fell overboard, an actual pirate named David Jones (he wasn't very well-known but it's still a connection), a pub owner who used to drug men and throw them in his locker (any place where you could store stuff away) until he could sell them to pirate ships. However, the most common belief is that it comes from a mix of Caribbean language and Christian faith. "Davy" sounds like the Caribbean word "duffy," or ghost. "Jones" was used to mean Jonah from the Bible (the guy who got swallowed by a whale). In other words, Davy Jones is Caribbean for "Ghost of Jonah." Some Christians believed that, after Jonah died, his spirit forever haunted the seas, storing the spirits of evil sailors in his "locker" (AKA the sea, where God himself locked Jonah away until he repented) and guiding good sailors to Heaven. So, Davy Jones' Locker is an old sailor's term for Hell or Purgatory. Wheeeeeee! Can you tell I've been waiting forever to explain this legend?
