We are experiencing the same things in the US with regard to China. Our southern “border” has seen a large number of young Chinese Nationals crossing. Your guess is as good as mine. Chinese have bought properties close to nuclear facilities and large swaths of farm land. I think it is a possible economic takeover or “bloodless” coup. Their current leader has quietly been unseen for a while and apparently his pictures are also disappearing so there may be a redirection. Do not ever underestimate them. Yes, I think they will try for Taiwan and judge our commitment to defending Taiwan. It will also tell the US’s other allies how dependable the US is to keep our word. This will dictate their future actions. They are also having a lot of defiance from the younger generation.

China is the sleeping dragon - not bear. China considers itself the "middle kingdom" which means it is the centre of civilization, as in they are superior etc. Aussies here should read Red Zone by Peter Hartcher great book and very relevant to our experience.
Or better still: The Golden Road by William Dalrymple. I haven't yet read it but, according to Dalrymple, we owe the most important developments in human civilisation to India rather than China. Personally I think Swat Valley in Pakistan, on the Chinese border, was the cradle of western civilisation.
