Hey Mike. Currently building a Skoolie myself. Thought I'd let you know a truck I used on the road probably a dozen times (during my 1,000,000+ miles in a big truck) that is ALWAYS carry a bottle of Dawn Dishwashing Detergent in yiur side box. Makes the very best lube for removing a tire ir installing a tire. Always remember, in the event you loose an outside dual, jack up the bus, or roll the bus up on a block of wood or a rock with the inside dual if that's all you can find, then squirt some dawn on the bead, and easily remove the tire with a crowbar and continue on to a safer place to replace the tire. Regardless of what goes wrong, or changing tires, you guys should be thrilled to have the bus. Millions of people would be so so happy to have what you do. Too bad you have to work and can’t be traveling around the country. I know Mike, you love your job. Well the good news is the rent you don’t have to pay can be stashed away! I still think you have one of the nicest buses on the road.
Ya'll should definitely do more of these videos. It's just like the build but at another level. Please keep teaching us. I feel like there is a huge void on videos that are about maintenance and mechanics on the bus. Every time I see your videos on this stuff I know I've just learned something useful for our lifestyle. BTW got super worried when you took the video down.
My ex husband was a tyre fitter so I got to help out changing D20's on a few English lorries.. hard work but so satisfying. You will save yourself loads of money if you can change your own tyres but get your own tyres lever's etc. Good job guy's 🤗 I wrote this 1/2 way through & you brought your own torque wrench Whoop whoop You did a fantastic Job & great steps for safety . Kerry, you seem to worry about making mechanical videos, well don't! This is part of your day to day lifestyle. Even though Mike gets to flex his tools and learning abilities💪, I see how you can save a buck and do it on your own! It also let's us know, how to know what you don't know. 2 comments: 1) I'm glad you did the research to find the safer ways to change a tire & properly torque the lug nuts. 2) There is a lubricant made especially for putting on the bead when removing & installing tires. Failing that, a mixture of water & liquid dish soap works very well & is much cheaper than olive oil.
Thank you so much. I just finished paying off my school bus and my journey to start my conversion into a skoolie starts in two weeks on 1 June well my CNA contract is done. I’ll be living in my school a while and building yet so that will bring a whole set of new challenges

Awesome video, My dad showed me how to change tires like that growing up. He was a mechanic, I wish I still had his tire spoons. But I found some for trucks on Amazon. Your right Amazon has everything! Now I can change my bus tires too! I am going to use your idea of using the air brake pressure canister as a compressor too.... I love how informative your vlogs are...brings back nostalgic memories of me and my Dad too! Thank you!🥰
Great job. I want to learn how to change a tire without removing the rim. I'll eventually practice that at home when I start getting new tires. Yall are doing a fine job at showing people they can save alot of money and do it themselves. I replaced a hi pressure power steering line and saved on the towing plus the repair. Saved myself 800 bucks. Oh, I love ur buzzers, I'm going to have to change mine now, for sure. Have a great day guys.
Hey good one guys! Very informative and it has to be comforting to know that you can for sure solve tire problems in the middle of nowhere if you have to. The pressure regulator to manage the bus air system with the tire inflation is ingenious mike. Well done!
Good Job Mikegyver! I've been there, manual changing of truck tires is a chore. Ya'll carry a spare? If you have space, it would be nice to have one some night in Monument Valley. In case of a tire puncture, a plugging kit would be handy too. Using the words of Bachman Turner Overdrive, "Let it roll! Down the highway!"

I enjoyed your video. I'm glad to see someone actually mention torqueing lug nuts, it's a subject that is almost never mentioned and is extremely important. Make sure you actually do a star pattern. I have a 2004 IC CE200 that I'm in the process of converting. I tried to break loose the wheel lugs with my Milwaukee impact gun (750 ft. lb.) but it wouldn't touch them. I had a conversation with my next door neighbor who has been a heavy equipment mechanic for 26 years and he told me that mechanics just slap a 1" air impact gun on lug nuts and over torque them. I believe my bus' lugs (not buds) are to be torqued to 450 ft. lb. which would be easily doable with my existing Milwaukee if they had been correctly torqued. Assuming I ever get my bus ready to roll I'll one of the last tasks will be to remove, inspect, change as needed and correctly install the wheels and tires to correct torque specs so I won't have to fight with the lug nuts if I have to take them off.
Hi Mike - Okay you've impressed me!!!! You are in good shape as that's a lot of work. I commend you for stating the importance of safety when working around and airing tires up. In my past I mounted Aircraft Tires (c-130's)in the Air Force. One day I had a tire blow in a tire cage. It was like standing next to a Howitzer cannon going off. My ears were ringing for hours after that. A change of clothes was in order too. Did some commercial tire sales and mounts on mining equipment, loaders and lumber trucks. I had never heard of using olive oil on the bead before. Always used tire soap. Thoughts are the soap will dry up and or wash off. I suppose Olive Oil would do that too? Very good video as usual. We bought a torque multiplier, I use my 150lb torque wrench, we did the math and I think it was about 47lbs with the multiplier, awkward, but doable. our old bus torques to 350 on the rear and 300 front. Have a Great day you two.

Hey a little info I work for a tires store never use anti Seize on lug studs and lugnuts it takes away from the friction to help hold the proper torque and can cause the lugs to loosen. The threads create the torque from the wrench to hold the wheel on. Ant questions let me know. I love watching you guys I just want you to be safe.
On the old style bud wheels if you don't use anti seize they will rust together. If they do your not getting apart without torches and braking studs. Just use torque wrench and check wheels as part of your maintenance

@@daviscrt I got one on Amazon in 2019 for 64 bucks for the bus. Haven't tried it yet. But it is heavy so hopefully it's a good set. That tool also let's you use a standard 1/2 drive torque wrench to achieve 500+ ft lb through it's gears. It's great that Mike made sure he could do this and explained it to the rest of us.

Those tire explosion shorts that you added to this vid, were from a wheel called a split rim. I watched one (in a tire cage) explode and the ring of the split rim went through the cage and a cement block wall. They are fazed out of the industry now. The wheels you have are perfectly safe to air up on the ground or standing without any issues. I have personally changed well over 1000 class 8 vehicle tires in my life and never had an issue with them. The only other thing that I can add to your video is, check the wheel over for cracks. Specially between the lug nut holes. Its common on those 2-piece lug nuts.
My husband worked for Goodyear for years and was trained to use Murphys Oil Soap. They bought it by the drums full. He said that even cooking Oil is flammable.
Ive always thought about what if my tire blows or goes flat while on the road. Now i know what i need just in case. I will be buying all the things so i can also do this myself on my 45ft coach. Thanks mahone for this video it sure helped me.
those tire "explosions" are typically with the older split rims or a result of overinflation. Ive seen the imprint of a slit rim tire explosion in the metal rood decking on the inside of a tire shop, 14' up.
I did truck tires in my younger days before tubeless tires, which came on the scene in the middle 70’s. First tire was a little funky but once you got the right bars and figured out the lube thing you were cookin. One thing is if you don’t take as much of a bite on the tire, when mounting it meaning don’t have the bars as far apart, try not to put 8 or 10” inches of the tire on at a time just go like maybe 6”. It will take a few more bites but you’ll get it done with less pressure, the bar will be easier to move. And easier on the bead of the tire. If you hear any cracklings noises that’s the cord of the tire rupturing and you could cause damage. I just put 6 11X 22.5’s Roadmasters on mine for $1700. Sailun’s I think are what UPS uses on their delivery vans. They’re 19.5’s but same tire. Made in China ???? Cooper Roadmasters are made in US and Vietnam. I try to stay out of China, it’s hard sometimes but I try. The inner nuts are sometimes called thimble nuts. Pretty good gun for under $200. I got the Milwaukee 1400 lbft 1/2” drive cause I can use it for many other things. And I can set it for torque. Good luck, be safe. Don’t know if you remember me but my wife and I met you in Erinberg at palooza we had the right hand drive Samarai.
Mike , the tires exploding in the videos you showed appeared to be split rim tube type tires. Which are very dangerous and should be outlawed. Your budd wheel tubeless tires are much safer, your greatest risk over inflating the tire, but with the 120 psi cutoff for your compressor you are safe. Good job 👍, you have a useful new skill.
This is when you need air tools, lol. My hubby has used the cheater pipe millions of times, UNTIL he got the air tools. He’s also done the put a good sturdy board on the tire and drive up on the tire to make it pop-off easier after you’ve started the breakdown process. Also, this is when you need to go to Harbor Freight and buy their tire breaker down machine, makes like sooo much easier . My husband also has a battery operated air impact wrench like you have. likeJust wanted to make you have a good laugh today.
What are you doing about balancing the wheels and tires? Also I think the clips you showed of the tired exploding are the old style split rims. They were a 2 piece rim.
Mike some or most of those tire clips are of split rim wheels and the rings didn't seat correctly and why les Schwabs don't mess with split rim wheels even though they have the cages
It takes me a couple hours to watch some of these mechanical vids. I keep pausing and looking at various tools as I learn about them. I will now not waste my money on an impact driver. Instead I'll be buying an impact wrench with an attachment for driver bits. Pneumatic if I have air breaks. Don't have a bus yet, the search is real.
the tires you showed in the video exploding are split rims we had them on the army truck the rims you have on the bus are not that so you are safe filling them up on the ground also i hope those tires are not directional tires you never mentioned that. if they are directional you have to make sure the arrow is pointing forward. so you might want to check that if they are it might be just as easy to just switch them out from the other side. Mike better safe than sorry so good to play things safe especially in the line of work you did im sure you have seen some stuff so safety is always important. be safe traveling my brother.
When changing your rear tyres: They should be same. Replace x2 , As the New tyre is going to be higher. Not the same. Will wear the most. For the long run. Piece of mind. Happy maintenance. Regards.
When he mentioned the "timing" on tires with valve stems did he match them up to same position or one up top and other at the bottom? I think he mentioned 180°...what's that mean?

Those videos of tires blowing out are from 99% split rims because of the rims not bolted tightly together. Unless your bus is built pre-80s its not much of a danger nowadays unless its a manufacturer defect of sidewall damage. Hopefully you also got a spare and I would recommend a golden bar for changing tires and are you running recaps or virgin tires?
Right hand thread on the right, Left hand thread on the left side, goes back to the Horse and Wagon days. Push an old wagon back far enough and the nuts will fall off, then the wheel.
Lug nuts are installed dry. Never, never, never use anything on the stud. One drop of oil on the washer to help get the correct torque. Torque is 475ft lbs.
I know people have to learn and get money from you tube and ......but I see this bus limits you to where you can pull into and its just a bunch of work.

We are building our bus in California right now. We are at the plumbing stage. I love how the right tool for the job makes life easier.

You can use dish soap as well for lubricant.With a touch of water.When you inflate it will show where air is getting by to help you seal it.
You can also use a ring of fire to get the bead to set

You can just use dish soap from the kitchen. Like you use to find air leaks just thicker.

You should look into a torque multiplier for removing the lug nuts/bolts. Makes it easy to break them loose.

I bought a Milwaukee high torque impact wrench. That thing has 1400lbs of "nut busting" torque. Makes quick and easy work on all tires.
Use two bars moving the back one forward as you go maybe

My husband worked for Goodyear for years and was trained to use Murphys Oil Soap. They bought it by the drums full. He said that even cooking Oil is flammable.

yes, tires have a Born on Date. Change every 5 years no matter the tread. We do the same on our trailers.
those tire "explosions" are typically with the older split rims or a result of overinflation. Ive seen the imprint of a slit rim tire explosion in the metal rood decking on the inside of a tire shop, 14' up.

I think it was a piece of conduit actually.
I did truck tires in my younger days before tubeless tires, which came on the scene in the middle 70’s. First tire was a little funky but once you got the right bars and figured out the lube thing you were cookin. One thing is if you don’t take as much of a bite on the tire, when mounting it meaning don’t have the bars as far apart, try not to put 8 or 10” inches of the tire on at a time just go like maybe 6”. It will take a few more bites but you’ll get it done with less pressure, the bar will be easier to move. And easier on the bead of the tire. If you hear any cracklings noises that’s the cord of the tire rupturing and you could cause damage. I just put 6 11X 22.5’s Roadmasters on mine for $1700. Sailun’s I think are what UPS uses on their delivery vans. They’re 19.5’s but same tire. Made in China ???? Cooper Roadmasters are made in US and Vietnam. I try to stay out of China, it’s hard sometimes but I try.
The inner nuts are sometimes called thimble nuts. Pretty good gun for under $200. I got the Milwaukee 1400 lbft 1/2” drive cause I can use it for many other things. And I can set it for torque. Mike , the tires exploding in the videos you showed appeared to be split rim tube type tires. Which are very dangerous and should be outlawed. Your budd wheel tubeless tires are much safer, your greatest risk over inflating the tire, but with the 120 psi cutoff for your compressor you are safe. Good job 👍, you have a useful new skill.

Forgot to tell you that you can use a jack to break the lug nuts loose from your tires. Also works on cars.

This is when you need air tools, lol. My hubby has used the cheater pipe millions of times, UNTIL he got the air tools. He’s also done the put a good sturdy board on the tire and drive up on the tire to make it pop-off easier after you’ve started the breakdown process. Also, this is when you need to go to Harbor Freight and buy their tire breaker down machine, makes like sooo much easier . My husband also has a battery operated air impact wrench like you have. likeJust wanted to make you have a good laugh today.
What are you doing about balancing the wheels and tires? Also I think the clips you showed of the tired exploding are the old style split rims. They were a 2 piece rim.
Not all of them. In fact split rim and split ring rims are becoming more and more a thing of the past.
They look old style and those are a thing of the past. Air them up just check them as your filling.

Mike some or most of those tire clips are of split rim wheels and the rings didn't seat correctly and why les Schwabs don't mess with split rim wheels even though they have the cages

It takes me a couple hours to watch some of these mechanical vids. I keep pausing and looking at various tools as I learn about them. I will now not waste my money on an impact driver. Instead I'll be buying an impact wrench with an attachment for driver bits. Pneumatic if I have air breaks. Don't have a bus yet, the search is real.
Mike there are toqurk multipler that reduces the toqurk you have to use to remove and install your nuts and use dish soap as tire lube
the tires you showed in the video exploding are split rims we had them on the army truck the rims you have on the bus are not that so you are safe filling them up on the ground also i hope those tires are not directional tires you never mentioned that. if they are directional you have to make sure the arrow is pointing forward. so you might want to check that if they are it might be just as easy to just switch them out from the other side. Mike better safe than sorry so good to play things safe especially in the line of work you did im sure you have seen some stuff so safety is always important. be safe traveling my brother.

When he mentioned the "timing" on tires with valve stems did he match them up to same position or one up top and other at the bottom? I think he mentioned 180°...what's that mean?
He put the valve stems for the inner and outer tire 180° apart and visible through the holes in the rims.
I recommend taking ownership of a torque multiplier and stinger bar.

You do the star pattern first? It put everything on evenly. You're wheel will be straight. Then you can go around.

Use soap to put tires on that works too
Get a torque multiplier and tighten to spec. They need to be torque tightened.
Knowing and being able to - different animals - but knowing how may keep you from getting ripped off by the no so nice folks .

Those videos of tires blowing out are from 99% split rims because of the rims not bolted tightly together. Unless your bus is built pre-80s its not much of a danger nowadays unless its a manufacturer defect of sidewall damage. Hopefully you also got a spare and I would recommend a golden bar for changing tires and are you running recaps or virgin tires?

Right hand thread on the right, Left hand thread on the left side, goes back to the Horse and Wagon days. Push an old wagon back far enough and the nuts will fall off, then the wheel.
Lug nuts are installed dry. Never, never, never use anything on the stud. One drop of oil on the washer to help get the correct torque. Torque is 475ft lbs.

What you say is very true but it's also wonderful and very comfortable and we love it way more than living in a sticks and bricks house.
