We have a lot of similar tastes and this one is such a “will never leave my collection” game that I am still keeping my 1st Edition stuff even with 2nd Edition out. It’s just that good even if 2nd Edition is an improvement in almost every way.
Man. You're just convincing me of what I already knew. I can't believe I haven't got this game yet either. It's been on my list for a long time and it always gets skipped.
"To summon a unit, pay its cost by spending a number of magic equal to the unit’s cost, then place it on an empty pace adjacent to a gate you control." You cannot summon uints adjacent to your summoner! (as default) (It makes a big difference!)
I like it. Art is gorgeous, factions are interest and different. The only problem i have with this game is i can't find with who to play it irl. If you wife like this game look for Sanctuary - The keepers era. Game come with build decks, faction are with different powers and style of play. Rules are easy to learn and your battles will be epic. For easy 1v1 game you can try Crimson company.
Recently got everything currently released for 2nd Edition. Really love this game, and I found out how much of a Plaid Hat fan boy I am because I've been a Mice & Mystics fan for a while, but have never tried Summoner Wars. Part of why I never looked into it was due to the number of additional decks out there, but I am so glad I tried. This is a relative quick skirmish game that melds head to head board gaming with Final Fantasy Tactics (my favorite videogame of all time) for me. And like you said, I love how they did away with the need to construct/modify decks with the 2nd Edition (same reason I prefer Empires of the North over the original Imperial Settlers). And the expansion decks, while they do add to the bloat, it adds variability while still fitting into the Master Set and Starter Set boxes. What more can you ask for in an expansion other than to add to the game without adding to the space it takes up? LOVE. IT.
This is wild, I was just researching this game last night! I’m designing a board game myself and was looking at games that are similar to the one I’m creating. I came across Summoner Wars last night and It’s the closest game I’ve found that plays like mine! I bought a copy of it, can’t wait to try it out.
I agree 100% with all your points! It's an absolutely excellent and streamlined game that unfortunately isn't for me. I enjoy playing it, but it just isn't a genre of game that I want to come back to (or will be able to get played with my wife). Knowing that I have played one of, if not, the best games in the head to head dueler genre and it wasn't a game for me helps me avoid many other games that might otherwise tempt me on crowd funding :)
I have been thinking about this game. I have Battle Con, Neuroshima Hex and Sakura Arms (but my copy of the latter is one with the correct pronunciation, so probably different from yours :) ). I am not sure which to get next, Summoner Wars, Bullet or one of the Exceeds. All great games, so difficult to choose.
Maybe you can try another card game call Ashes Reborn: Rise of the Phoenixborn also published by same company, that's also a great head to head dueling type games.

Thanks so much for this overview! Been thinking about getting this one and you’re really tempting me

Comming from MTG this game is amazing for all the points that you made! I love it too
My favorite game of all time. Love it for all the same reasons. Great review!

They sell neoprene playmats fpr Summoner Wars. Currently out of stock last time I checked.
Great game, they really improved the effect of dice-luck from the 1st edition
When’s the Sakura arms vid? Summoner wars is definitely on my to get list.

Yep. Those are the best words. Can we play again? I liked that one. Can we try that again? I think I get it now, set it up.

I also love this game❤ but it's difficult to find a partner to play physically 😂
Mindbugs is another game i like. Try it out!
Ahh I picked a copy of this up about a month ago - yet to play it but sounds like I might have to based on this review!

I've always wanted to try this one. But I too have too many 1v1 skirmish games.
If you like 1v1 skirmish games ... you need to do yourself a favour and try Summoner Wars.

You can buy a playmat
This game is so good
I can’t look at the art. It’s painful. First edition for life!
