  • Covering around 40% of Brazil, the Amazon is the largest tropical forest in the world. However, since 1970, deforestation has claimed an area bigger than the size of France. Facing similar adversity is Brazil’s second-largest forest, the Atlantic Forest. Once covering an area the size of South Africa, today more than 85% has been cleared, with intensive single-crop farming and cattle raising threatening the remaining land and soil.
Belterra works with smallholder farmers in brazil to restore forests through regenerative agricultural practices and to create market incentives for sustainably grown crops.

Over the last ten years, the evidence that we face urgent challenges to protect the environment has become indisputable, and it’s clear that the time to act is now. Drawing inspiration from the concept of moonshots, which since the moon landing in 1969 has become shorthand to talk about the most ambitious and ground-breaking goals, Prince William announced The Earthshot Prize: an ambitious set of challenges to inspire a decade of action to repair the planet.
We believe in the power of human ingenuity to prove to us all that the seemingly impossible is possible.

I was born in Brazil and most sincerely appreciate the work of Belterra towards the Amazon Rainforest. I was lucky to visit Manaus and do a tour into the Amazonas with river boats but this was back in the 80s - a long time ago. A lot changed since and it is great to see that Belterra is doing everything possible to retore the beauty and importance of this vast rainforest.

Thank you to Earthshot for bringing these organizations to the worlds attention and helping them expand their reach. Hopefully organizations like Belterra can work with others in the field like last years winners that are working to reforest the Andes.

Interestingly I noted that cattle farmers destroy a potential cash crop (Brazil nuts & possibly other crops) that occurs naturally to build cattle farms that, in the end do not support them. - Perhaps better education of business practices would help people?
