Dig your heels into the ground, and feel the stories rise up through your boots. This land has its own kind of power. The same kind of power as you. The power of remembrance- the stories will live on for as long as you do, and vice versa. Some might call it a curse to ferry folklore along for eternity, but I can think of worse ways to be damned.
I've been writing up a NPC character for a tabletop RPG, a sort of centuries old spirit tasked with keeping stories and all those important things worth remembering. This comment has really nailed a core facet of how I envisioned its outlook.
This and Appalachia. Appalachia has a more upbeat feel that also somehow fits this song. Has some slightly different lyrics to fit the theme, but still.
This song is amazing! It really strikes a chord (no pun intended) in me. [Edited, missed an A chord in the end of the verses] Can't find any tabs, so if anyone is interested in making them, I'd be most grateful... But until such time, this is what I hear. It's superficial, but if you're completely numb in the ears, then this might help you get going. The twiddling isn't very hard to figure out and except for the few odd ones, the chords are quite straightforward. Mind you, they aren't full chords, so play around with them. Drop D tuning. Nice work! This is pretty much right on! It's honestly been so long since I recorded this one that I used your tabs to remember the fingering for that chorus section. ;-)
it's an incomplete D (with the upper E not pulled) and you fiddle with the D-string by releasing it and then pressing the 2. fret. With the C you press down the 3rd fret on the G-string with your pinky, to get the small transition movement.

Last days in my University doing my engineering thesis this was my anthem. I'm happy to report that the thesis was a smashing success🎉. Now I enjoy the fruit of my labour and have this song to remember those times.
Now that I'm familiar with the song in general I went and listened to all the other ones, and there are definitely contenders but this one is my favorite. I love the resonant voice, but also because I like to sing them and this is the only one that really fits my pitch range
This reminds me of "When the Hunter Came to Town" from the latest Borderlands 3 DLC, but this came out first, so I think people at Gearbox have definitely got you on their radar...
To be fair, mate, this is very Appalachian Bluegrass. Not something mister Ike invented. But something he does exquisitely well. You might want to check out some Filk if you'd like. Maybe Hardspace: Shipbreaker OST too? There's a LOT of good stuff like that.
...After watching some gameplay...nah it's not for me. The delay between the text appearing on the screen and the voice actor starting to read, plus the glacially slow delivery of each line....I'm sorry but I hope and pray I don't live long enough to survive a run of this game. Soundtrack seems pretty cool though.
It's stuff like this, sturgill Simpson, the dead south, and the bastion soundtrack that makes me hesitate in saying I don't like country. I don't like modern pickup truck and divorce country. This is a different breed.

Reminds me of American Gods
Those are the sweetest words. :)
Very well put.

My god you're going somewhere, you've got a hell of a career ahead of you if you keep making soundtracks like these. You and everyone involved.
They will have quite a story to tell at the end of it. I am sure of that.
This is the best of the Vagrant Song variations
I love it. This and Midwest.
It's my favourite for sure

the intro is really tricky! I can't get the precise fingering its really bugging me

Kaupo Rebane thank you for this. I’ve been trying to teach myself how to play this. The intro is tricky. Any tabs would be great!
Thank you for this
This is incredible. Im from the south and this brings tears to my eyes.

Well, I’m gonna scrawl my name
On the bare bones of the earth
I’m gonna dig my heels
Into the ground
‘Cause when that ferryman come
For to tally up my worth
I won’t leave much behind
That can be found
Well, I’m gonna heft my spade
Up upon my wearied back
I’m gonna keep last rites
Tucked in my soul
‘Cause when my coals burn low
And my train’s run outta track
Won’t be no one else
To dig my hole
Well, I
Got no companion
‘Cept the wind
And the sea
And when I’m
Cold and empty
They’re the ones
Who’ll bury me
Well, I’m gonna cast my stones
O’er the waters of this land
And by and by
I’ll see them far and long
‘Cause when the night come down
For to take me hand in hand
This will be my tale
My Vagrant Song

His voice is incredible!! My favorite song in the whole game to travel to.

Just engagin’ with the content here, Barnes.
This song is one of the main reasons i love this game so much, the whole vibe and the voice ❤ Everytime i ride my motorcycle i got it stuck in my head
by far the best version of Vagrant song
Cool game, GREAT song!
I bought the game when I heard this song. Really beautiful. Keep doing such an amazing job!
Fantastic song from a fantastic game.
Am an African but I can feel the sadness of the singer that is in me
So wonderfully perfect. Thank you for creating this.
Such a moving piece of art, i love it. Thanks for sharing!
I bought a soundtrack that happened to have a game.
The music is better than the game.
One song from soundtrack popped up on my Spotify weekly... and now I'm listening to the whole thing and buying the game.
Good stuff, dude.
Now that I'm familiar with the song in general I went and listened to all the other ones, and there are definitely contenders but this one is my favorite. I love the resonant voice, but also because I like to sing them and this is the only one that really fits my pitch range
My favorite version
Soulful...love from Hungary!
This is the stuff that brings country back
Holy cow this made my hair stand up like no song before! Crunchy tune!
I know im late to the party but i gotta say, amazing song, brilliant work, really brings me into the game.
keep coming back, so good
One of the handful of video game vinyl records i have been searching for a copy of for ages now.
I finally understood why that country once called torch of liberty.
One of the best songs I've ever heard!
Dude I am not from the south and this song brought tears to my eyes, awesome work, really touching song.
Good music's good music, regardless of where you're from.
The game is good, the soundtracks is banger.
Well done.
More of this please
Several months have passed.... and I still listen to this ! Great job :D
Will we ever see guitar tablature for these songs!? So good!
Wow mate! Amazing!
I love all of the vagrant songs. Fantastic job!
This is a beautiful song :)
Great sound
Such a GREAT song
This would fit amazingly well in the long dark
....I've not heard of this game, but the sound track alone has my interest hooked.
This song has honestly brought me so much joy, insight, clarity, and freedom.
Amazing!
never played this game, never heard of it. This song's pretty cool though
A fabulous version of a great song. I definitely wonder how @Justin Johnson would throw his genius into it tho.
This feels like a West of Dead song
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great great song 👍

I found chords and everything, but can somebody teach me how to play this? I just dont get it. I just dont get that melody :,)
No video game song has the right to be this beautiful.
This reminds me of "When the Hunter Came to Town" from the latest Borderlands 3 DLC, but this came out first, so I think people at Gearbox have definitely got you on their radar...

been whistling this for about a week straight and it's all your fault
Where can I get the tabs for this amazing piece?
I really liked the game, this song just matched it perfectly and is awesome by itself
fucking awesome
I really wish I could find the tabs to this.
If you email me, I can at least send you the chords. You can contact me through my website at ryanike.com
I want to know how to play this song
I wish I could find a tab to this
Just checking again… yep this song still blows me away
Old and in the way
This is how I learned this game exists; RUclips recommended me this video in a Mix. Probably going to buy and play it.

Soundtrack seems pretty cool though.
I like to think that Althea composed this
Was it made for the game?
It's stuff like this, sturgill Simpson, the dead south, and the bastion soundtrack that makes me hesitate in saying I don't like country. I don't like modern pickup truck and divorce country. This is a different breed.
isnt the song in the game sung by a female?
ah, thanks :D
There's a unique version that plays whenever you're in the Appalachia region that's sung by a woman as well.
And a duet in the southwest.
Mom doesn't understand a man's got to do what He's got to do . A. She's not altogether sure anymore constant tug of war
