While circumnavigating singlehanded in a small sailboat, I was on a passage from the Falkland Islands to Namibia and one dark night I sailed through a huge mass of bioluminescent squid. It was quite an impressive display and added to the normal bioluminescence you normally see in the boat bow wave and wake. Truly magical.
I read that the sound of boat motors is a cacophony underwater, that travels far and that alerts creatures to the approach of vessels. In the age of sail, however, ships were relatively silent as they crossed the world's oceans, which accounts for the many tales of enounters with fantastic beasts. This goes to show what lurks beneath the waves, and what we might stumble across were we to unwittingly creep up on the ocean's largest creatures or fail to scare them off. Who knows what more quiet scrutiny may reveal? It is a sobering though that if we dip a toe into any saltwater, we are in the same bathtub as these monsters. It rather puts me off even going ankle deep. I am going to take the plunge - no pun intended - and say that the lights are associated with hunger and/or aggression.
That animal is beautiful and unique. The colour is so vivid, and the bioluminescent lights and its magnificent cape make it look like an underwater butterfly or fairy. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this amazing encounter with us. I would love to some day also be part of this scientific community and your videos give me more motivation to do so.
Wow thats awesome!! another reason you guys should really live stream these dives like the other couple organizations do, would be fantastic to see!!! those external shots of the ROV are amazingly cool as well!! Thanks for sharing that cool encounter!
That is the most incredible looking creature. So elegant with those long dramatic wing sweeps (like Count Dracula muahahaha, or an actress flouncing in a gorgeous flowy red gown), then those beautiful & cute googly eyes & the almost artistic shapes he makes with his lit up tentacles 🦑
The size of lemons, must be some British measurement. I had to rewind it three times and use CC. They are up to seven feet, weight up to 21 stone and have photofor's the size of lemons.
What a beautiful creature. And we keep thinking we are the pinnacle of evolution. And then you see organism’s like this squid. And in our ignorance we destroy their habitat. What a pinnacle we are.
Thanks for the video but you do realise that you have an international audience and most of the world does not use feet and pounds, I have no idea what 300 pounds is. Maybe keep in mind for your next narration. Cheers.
Speaking as a Canadian with a tiny computer in his hand, and access to Google, I say let them use their freedom units. It's not hurting anyone, and it's hilarious to watch the lengths they go towards not using metric anyway

Somehow it is genuinely terrifying, incredibly awesome, and downright adorable all at the same time.

En octopoose ken faurt weeth hees teath
Boldly going where no one has gone before... into the deep ocean! Fantastic footage, guys!
That octopus is going to go home and tell everyone he fought off a giant alien mecha, but nobody will believe him.
Oc- octopus?
It's an octopus squid, so not a true octopus
@@dankslug So it's not a pirate ghost, but a ghost pirate?
@@dankslugnot as octopus at all.
It's a squid.
@@StoffelDilligas as I said
It's so cool to see the curiosity of this creature so different from us. Awesome sighting!
Omg! That looked like a computer animation at first, surreal! Cool squid with shiny large eyes.
it's got big anime googly eyes and looks like a pokemon, that's crazy cool

Triggering my thalassophobia and satiating my curiousity at the same time feels so gratifying lol
I enjoy this so much! Amazing content, best wishes to you and your future projects! 🌻
Glad you enjoy it! 💙
That is some really cool footage! Also, the eyes were strangely reflective!
So much to hopefully learn!

Thank you.
Absolutely stunning! Great work Team.
That squid is absolutely beautiful ❤
Tentacle lights look like a way to trick predators into mistaking where it's head is
For the rest of the world, that uses metric units, those squids can reach lengths of over 2,1m and can weight more than 136kg

In all these deep sea videos, it's hard to get a sense of size
love your work guys, shame the vids never very long. Is there somewhere i can watch longer videos?
the OceanXplorers series is now screening on Disney+ Hulu and National Geographic
@@OceanX thanks for taking time to reply, i will check it out. thanks again from the UK

1:56 looks like a cartoon character with those blue and white eyes and round red nose like thing.
Absolutely beautiful.
That was so beautiful!!!
That was awesome, the squid’s eyes didn’t appear real, almost cartoon like, beautiful though.
Thank you!🦑👍
Freaking amazing.
Unbelievably beautiful
Magnificent. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
Awesome footage!
Thanks for sharing with us! (It's why we subbed.)

It was so gorgeous! I wasn’t prepared for how clear and blue its eyes were. 🦑❤
Thanks for sharing.
Congrats for such a good look
Hypothesis the squid was coming up to the rav to tell it to get out of its feeding area
Truly mesmerizing
Thank you for sharing
The anime eyes on that squid... he rolled up to the camera with a full OuO face.
That squid looked like a cartoon, crazy.
I’m glad I didn’t have the volume up for this one.
That was amazing!
Absolutely beautiful 😍
0:50 that looks like a giant demon fish for a second
Big eyes too.
Amazing sea creature. Checking you out.❤😊
Bioluminescence on most species as far as i know tends to be used as a form of communication or for hunting prey.

Indeed that is completely abstract for 95% people in the world. The other 5 % are not aware of the existence of the 95%
It uses them for sweet oceanic rave parties!
I must have missed the attack when I blinked

Wow!
"Come at me, Bro."
Territorial maybe. Warning the ROV to get the heck outta there?
Am i getting it right, so just of the coast it drops down more than 4000 meters?!
Sucks that we ever see a size comparison with them, on camera they look like a tiny regular fish size, I can’t imagine it being 2 meters long. 😊
Seeing the two dots come out of the void is so scary
Next you gotta film a colossal 🦑
Attack of Gaint Squid
Final Boss Stage
00:47 Entering ecological deadzone. Adding records to the database.
I’ve never heard of this chonker-300 pounds is a LOT for a 7-foot squid!
The squid has the same opinion about your craft. Usually see them broken on the bottom never see them alive.
Bellissimo... magico...
Damn the new Minecraft patch update is looking pretty sick
Where there’s design there’s a designer!!
So Cool 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
We’re you really as close to shore as shown in those drone shots and able to drop the UAV 4500m? Or is the trench farther out to sea?
Shades of Europa Report.
Amazing....
so cool
the giant squid eyes like a demon appear!!!
Nice video catch! But clearly the bio-luminance isn't effective on Sperm Whales, since they are commonly eaten by them!
Squid sees bright lights and what is the reaction ?
Was it big?
You Lucky
Where there's one, there are more. And where there are small ones, there are bigger ones still. So on and so forth.
And then Cthulhu. And death.
Shells, there i said it.
Woah
Find the colossal cmon guys
Sperm Whales dive deep to snack on large squid
Cool
It kinda looks like a face when it looks at the camera doesn't it?
Don't implode the squid
Octopus squid? How about squidopus?

And lose the LIVE surround from the channel tag. It’s tacky and click baity. Your better than that.
