Any time we delete images from our library, we need to be careful. Removing images from Luminar comes with some safeguards. Removing folders requires extra care and understanding of what is happening to your non-destructive edits and on your hard drive. In this video, I explain how deletion works in Luminar 4, both for folders and for images.

Very well explained, thanks.
You are welcome!
Thanks. I always wondered why some of my images would lose their edits. You will have to tread carefully when managing folders in Luminar.
Very true. Whenever possible, work inside Luminar.
Thank you Scott.
I notice my "Resources Folder " on my hard drive is quite large can I delete this folder?
I would check with Skylum first. I don't know what information is contained in that folder. It could be all of your editing history - deleting that would be bad.
@@ScottDavenport thank you for your reply
Thanks for the clarification, Scott.
Sure thing!
This raises more questions
thanks, how we move a folder to new place keeping inc. all processed and Metadata in new folder ??
Create an empty folder in the new place (ex: external hard drive) and add it to Luminar. Then, in Luminar, drag and drop the subfolders from the old top-level folder to the new one. Again, do the drag & drop *in Luminar*.
@@ScottDavenport thanks
Soo, my Google on how to close the current image in Luminar Windows returned the link to this video. Not relevant but I watched anyway and this is scary. My take-away? Never do ANY file /folder management in Luminar. Always do ALL file /folder management in Windows Explorer.
BTW, I learned you cannot close an image in Luminar Windows. So strange. Angry users have given up on that feature being implemented judging from Skylum forum posts from 2 years ago to current. Apparently you can do it on a Mac but there is no File/Close command in Windows. I think you have to uninstall/reinstall Luminar to see a blank image edit area in the program. Scott, do you know a way? Thanks for the really important message you delivered in this video!
The nervousness for me wrt doing folder mgmt outside of Luminar is mistakenly moving something outside your catalog. As soon as you do that, your non-destructive edits are lost. It is a *very unforgiving* operation. I have a different video out there on how to move folders, including across hard drives, and doing that within Luminar. I find that a safer alternative because the catalog never loses track of the folders/photos and you don't lose edits.
I'm not sure I follow the "closing" a photo. When you are finished editing, just go back to the Library panel. There's nothing to "close" really. Edits are recorded and saved in the catalog as you make them.
@@ScottDavenport Everything you said about closing/not closing a photo is correct, but you are still looking at that photo in the edit space. What makes it more annoying to Win Luminar users is the Mac version does have a File/Close to clear the current image from the edit space (at least in L3 which was in use when the angry letters to Skylum began. Mac users are not accustomed to having a File/Close (I think). Win users are accustomed to having it in all Win programs. Close down the image you are working on, but don't exit the program. There are many reasons to close an image when you are done with it, the very least is don't take a chance to accidentally hit an Undo or other mistakes that can impact that image and you not realize it. But mostly I think the issue is: Just clean the slate until I get ready to decide what I want to do next. Even worse, when you restart L4, that image you finished with yesterday shows up again. If I want to see it staring at me, I'll go open it again. FYI here is one of the many chains at Skylum Forum where the issue is discussed. It starts out very friendly ... 😁 but then when stupid responses get posted by Skylum people, you know, the blah-blah-blah kind, it escalates. Other similar threads on the same subject exist in the forum. BTW, this is FYI and I am not challenging you with it at all, and I thank you for your response.

PS. Purchased your Subtle skies, nice, but disappointed the price won't even buy your lunch! Suggest you add a couple more skies and 2x the price. 🤣👍
FWIW ... File > Close on the Mac version of Luminar quits Luminar. :)
Yesterday I worked with pic. In Luminar. Manny pics. I wanted to delite completely. I then marked the pic. With x and in the end I used cm+arrogant back( like I use to delite pics. In LR. It seemed to work. Will there be problems to delite this Way?
Hi Marianne ... 'x' just flags a photo as rejected. Cmd+Delete in a folder or album moves the selected to the Luminar trash. A Cmd+Delete in the Trash shortcut permanently deletes the selected images (moves them to the system trash). That's completely normal and a typical Luminar deletion workflow.
Thanks
