I've seen that kind of behavior in a cat that had been forced to compete with other cats for food. They had been kept in cages and food may be dropped in once in awhile for them to fight over. They person that was doing that eventually tossed that cats outside because they as she said get too mean and would let her hold them. Well I wonder why? Maybe because she was torturing them. Anyway the one that the people I used to live with wound up with after finding her in a trash can in the coldest November we'd had in decades was like this with any food even if she was fed plenty of food. She never got over her earlier days when she had to fight for food with her siblings and momma. I think about that cat often and hope she finally found peace someplace

I had a cat that did that. He was abandoned as a 4 week old kitten, and I raised him. Here's what I did: I gave Artie (my kittie) his own feeding territory--a bowl that was off limits to everyone else. Allow him to have a very small amount of human food if it is something a cat can digest. He lived to be 18, and we were devastated when he died.

We have a roughly 1 year old with the same background. The issue is, she finishes her food in half a second and sprints to steal the food from our other very polite cat. The problem cat will even abandon her food before it is gone to go steal the other cats food if she knows you're feeding her somewhere. Sorry about your cat

    • @denisemorrison876
      @denisemorrison876 8 месяцев назад

I had the same problem. Rescued two kittens and their mom. They were all scrawny and undernourished, and the food obsession continued even now years later. They’re at a healthy weight and fed good canned food. But one hour before feeding time the chorus begins, and if one doesn’t finish in time, they’ll lose out. It was quite an investment, but I bought microchip feeders for all 3 of them. This keeps everyone on their own food, and everyone gets the right amount. It’s been really helpful when I’ve used a pet sitter and the shy-er youngsters don’t lose out on their food when their more social mom comes out for the sitter. The feeders are around $200 each, but definitely worth it!

I have a food obsessed cat. Although she still hangs around and tries to eat our food, her behavior has calmed down a lot due to these things.
    1. Automatic Pet Food Feeder. Small meals and routine works for her!! She even takes herself to bed after the last feeding of the day 😊
    2. Wet Cat food once a day. She gets hype (meowing loudly and insistantl) but that’s as extreme as she gets.
    3. She loves to perch on the fridge while we cook. She gets to watch us but is out of the way. We have to stay in the kitchen or else she will try to eat the food, but that is just fine.
    4. Always keep the kitchen clean and food put away.
She will still try to eat our food if we let her, but she is so much less intense about it. And we can cook without her freaking out the way she used to. Hope this helps!!

Strangely enough, the feral two kittens that I caught have been the best adjusted cats personality-wise, with the best mojo, compared to cats that we have adopted from people in the past.
Maybe those ferals just simply had more socialization from their mothers and brothers/sisters.

    • @hauntedshadowslegacy2826
      @hauntedshadowslegacy2826 4 года назад +12

Feral cats in urban settings tend to live in colonies. Sometimes, those colonies are fed by locals. It's very possible your former feral kittens were from such a colony, where good food manners and behavior is rewarded.

My cat use to be like this....her story was that she was starving when they found her. She is much better and has stopped this behavior. It took time and scheduling. I had to make sure she was feed everyday at the same times so she started knowing she is going to eat and stopped trying to eat my food. We did have a couple of fights: she stole my food and I chased her down and took it from her. But with time she has gotten comfortable and knows human food is not an option and her food will be there. She still eats things left out, so I’ve become a neater human. So good things are happening.

I've wanted to know about this myself. I adopted a brother and sister who were rescued from a hoarding house not longing after moving out of my parent's house. Everything was normal at first, but as I started baking and eating more desserts, my girl started trying to eat everything that had sugar in it. She'd try to drink sweetened tea, ice cream, cake, pie, muffins... literally anything baked or sweet. Not aggressively, but really persistently. I though cats couldn't taste sweet, so I am so confused why she loves these things. She also likes chewing on plastics and certain fabrics. I have to keep the grocery bags locked up in the kitchen and throw away any packaging that comes. I think I'll try those food puzzles.

Make a video about the danger of using cayenne or chili pepper as a deterrent for your cat. I've heard this suggested so many times to keep cats away from a multitude of things. But I didn't know until recently that cats can easily get it on their paw and then later wipe it in their eyes or nose or get it in their mouths while grooming themselves.
Tell everyone not to use pepper in their gardens or houseplants

A friend's cat was super aggressive about bread, and also really clever about getting it. The only safe place to store it was inside the microwave or the fridge, since he couldn't physically open them. He was rescued after being abandoned in the middle of winter, so most likely it was related to trauma from nearly starving.

Wheat is usually bad for cats ( in general)-- my cat is crazy about wheat/ bread too but ...sooner or later she gets sick. I guess it is sort like us humans who may enjoy foods bad for us & want to eat even if we are intolerant or have an allergy to eat. Try showing your friend this video?? giving meat based treats like freeze dried chicken/duck/beef/etc to break your friend's kitty's addiction to bread? Plus obviously all the tips that Jackson Galaxy gave really work ( i tried them & still practice them now).

3 years old TNR’d and finally up for adoption at a rescue in Texas.
Other cats picked on her at the shelter probably because she growls when she’s anxious or around food.
We are only on day three but making good progress.
She is our only pet and will eventually learn she is safe and will not go hungry.
Loves belly rubs and head butts us for attention.

My cat Nacho came into the house when he was 8 years old. We don't really know how he grew up, but he was very skinny and showed dog behaviour. He was obsessed of food. My first cat accepted him, but became stressed out on feeding time too. They both eat in different rooms since then for the last 2 years. Food puzzles aren't enough. We hear him growling and meowing in the other room because food is not coming out fast enough. Nacho is still faster with dinner time than the other cat and so he starts scratching the door and making really loud noises because he wants to come out. Once I open the door after the other cat is ready, Nacho storms out to see if there are any crumbs left. Nothing can stop him. Even if we wait another hour to let Nacho out, he will still be focused to find some food. Sometimes it's making me crazy!

Thanks for the info and advice. We have a couple of aggressive cats in our house. We keep them separate from each other but they still try to fight through the doors. Eagle is more aggressive than Rosie is or rather he is more destructive. We have just started using one of those kitty calming diffusers. It’s only been a couple of days though. We have one diffuser in the boys room and one in the living room. We are thinking of putting one in the girls room too. The boys stay in their room during the day and the girls have the run of the house. Then we switch them and the girls stay in their room at night and the boys have the run of the house. We have also instigated a play session each night with Eagle to help get his energy out. I’ll let you know if his behavior improves.

There's a type of training they could try, where you get cooked chicken and tell the cat to "drop it"-the toast. When the cat will spit out the bread and go for the chicken instead, you praise it and let it eat the chicken. It worked wonders on my pet and her food aggression.

My rescue cat def has food insecurity issues. So she will try to get my food and gulps down her own food so I’ve found food puzzles really help and several smaller meals at first when I got her. But now that she’s been with me for two months she is getting more food secure. She’s not as OCD about her food and sometimes prefers her toys over the treats. Hooray. But she is a work in progress as are we all. But I’m pleased with how the hunt, kill, eat strategy is working for her. She wakes me up every morning next to her toy toy box ready to play. 😊

Funny story: Both of my cats are rescues that were born in feral colonies. One lived in a storm drain outside of a Thai restaurant and the waitresses used to feed her before my friend got her off the street and adopted her out to me. To this day, I can not bring any Thai food into the house- she goes COMPLETELY CRAZY and won't take "no" for an answer! Of course, you can imagine giving curry chicken to a cat is not a good idea for a LOT of reasons...so the result is I have to eat Thai in the restaurant and no leftovers can come home!

My four-week-old foster kitten is a resource guarder. Not with toys or anything like that but with human food, his cat food, and treats. He was a singleton and emaciated when I found him and since he's a foster I really wanna somehow kick the behavior in the butt or learn how to manage it so I can either help his future adopters know how to manage it. My one other cat doesn't bother him and is actually really respectful of his food and we started crate training for his breakfast and dinner which helps a bit but he still snatches and growls with treats and bites when you're trying to give it to him. This video made me think maybe I can also only give him treats through puzzled and doing small meals will help. I cross my fingers that it will help!

Brothers kitty was very young and he was doing that stealing food the same thing. The problem is they were not feeding that kitty enough quality food he was not getting enough food for as energetic as he was. Also they were using cheap food with a lot of fillers. So once they started free feeding quality dry available all times & 2/3 times quality wet the kitty until he was at least 7-12 months old. Vet should definitely tell you same, free fed kitten first 7 to12 months.

Other reasons can be that the cat was the runt of the litter and had to compete with his litter mates in order to survive. Or it could be that he was once a stray and has experienced some level of starvation. It’s most likely an anxiety driven behaviour. My cat Berlioz is food aggressive, and he was a stray when he was a young kitten, and was likely the runt. I decided to feed my cats 3 times a day instead of twice. They already get fed in separate rooms, and I’m going to increase the amount I feed him a little bit to help him feel full. 😺

My friend got puzzle toy feeders for her rabbits... one of them heaved a sigh at the idea of having to WORK for his food and just stared at her sadly til she dumped the food out. Another basically ripped the toy apart to get to the treat inside, but never actually figured it out, she just fussed over it til she got it open...
The third bunny though... oh man. That rabbit. We never thought he was super smart or anything, because he's... a weird rabbit. Doesn't really act like most rabbits because he grew up rather feral and never got proper socializing with other bunnies or with people.
He is EXTREMELY food motivated... and he figured out the easy, medium and hardest modes of that puzzle in MINUTES. And repeated the actions over and over again. He was ON IT. So we realized he is super smart... my friend is now working with him to train him to do all kinds of tricks as part of his socialization training!

All our stray kittens do it although I usually find them between ages 4 - 10 weeks... The one making the sound usually claws whoever (cat siblings) is beside... the bowls are always a couple of feet from one another AND I feed them after playing. This doesn't apply to pellies, they don't mind sharing from the same bowl (always available when they are kittens, then they only have it during the day so I can sleep at night...)

This video is exactly my cat. She's very horrible with food. I never realized it was a thing. She will rip open packages of sealed food. She growls and gets mad when you take things away from her. We have to have a garbage with a lid and lock it up in the cupboard cause she's into our garbage. She also has a huge issue with chewing up silicones and rubbers. Pot and pan handles, soles of our shoes, crocs. I never know it was a real thing. She loves food puzzles and is very food motivated and does a bunch of tricks. She's 5 years now and has really simmered down. She came from a BYB with a bit of an overcrowded setting and taken from mom early. So now I know that it is likely the cause.

They have already learned that I can leave food bowls out all day and they will only eat when they are hungry and won’t shovel all the food down in one go. They don’t fight for food and they both have their own bowls. As of today one of the females started going crazy over people food, anything I’m eating she tries HARD to get. It’s only the one female and she doesn’t get aggressive, just very persistent on getting the food. She isn’t this way with anything else, just human food.

She's "semi-feral" (but, not so much anymore...Thanks @Jackson Galaxy !) But....I'm wondering if she totally freaked when we took her food away the night before the surgery. Now, mix in the hormonal changes?? idk. She was raised by dogs, so now....anything that lands on the floor is hers. lol! She's getting fat. We've been having her sit for food. I love that trixie puzzle feeder, it really made our cat Trixie think to get her food. To get her to quit scarf and barfing, we put her food in a paper bowl (mostly dry kibble but some wet with water, because we're trying to get her weight up) on top of a boot tray with her water dispenser. The paper bowl doesn't really have any friction against the tray, so she has to kinda chase the kibble not only around her larger bowl, but also chase the bowl around the tray kind of. It's a little entertaining. :)

People raising single kittens need to take the responsibility to teach them much as their mother would. We have always redirected bad behavior with a firm but gentle no and a tap on the nose. Then moving them to what they can... eat...scratch...hunt. This is yours we would say. I'm proud to say we have never had a cat who scratched the furniture, begged for food or was temper driven. Perhaps we were just lucky.

I don’t give him anything or feed him human foods because I don’t want to encourage the behavior but I can’t eat anything around him.
