  • The future supposedly belongs to e-cars. But what about planes? German company Lange Aviation is already working on a further technological revolution. Axel Lange's firm produces sailplanes powered by electric engines. They're probably no alternative to conventional aircraft engines, but special aircraft could benefit from the new technology. A report by Christian Pricelius.

    Some of the best days of my summer youth was when I was a young US Army PFC soldier stationed in Hanau Germany. On Weekends I would thake th train to Mintz and catch a ride to Finther to join my new frineds in a German Glider Club. Each flight cost $1.25 US or 4.5 German Marks I met a 17 year old boy in thte glider club named Wolfgang Ermish there, sure wish I could find him again.........

    I Have A Question:
    would the previously mentioned safety rocket make it so glider wings could be thinner, ( so they don't have to carry water ( or less)), if they also could reliably get to smooth landing surfaces ?
    it is somewhat, Also, a modern materiel science and construction techniques question, ( pertaining to wing thickness ( or length )), but it's still the same question.
    i don't know much about gliders...if the water is carried for intended distance from height, or just to make them faster, i don't know. EDIT : NOW I GET IT....Glider Water Increases The Wing Loading .... IT'S A STRUCTURAL THING !!!
    when there is no water in them, they flex up more
    So the glide ratio is compensated by that water weight, Because It Holds The Wings Flatter

    Good idea! Electric makes the most sense in gliders. You only need power occasionally and the motors are lightweight, which is a big plus in a glider. The only hitch is the weight of batteries, and that is improving rapidly. Let's hope someone will markets kit versions without that astronomical quarter-of-a-million-dollar price tag.
    Elsewhere, electric for propulsion is a silly fad, particularly given that, thanks to fracking, we are a generation or more from reaching "Peak Oil."

    250,000.00 EU but in USA there was once a kit built glider called a Duster that cost 3,000.00 dollars to buy new , assembly required. That shows you the difference between a aircraft designed to save costs and one designed to be cutting edge technology. If the Duster had ever been factory built and there had been a market for at least 100 a year the cost of a finished factory built one at that time could have been about 5,000.00 dollar since a factory can cut the materials cost even more then a kit producer can. But at that time there was no market (buyers) for 100 factory built Duster a year . I think the Duster could be converted into a all aluminum design by someone that knows how to design in aluminum. I also think it could be powered by a electric motor in the nose and even redesigned into a conventional tractor airplane configuration in same way the 1-26 was changed into a 1-30. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schweizer_SA_1-30

    another clean, ( possibly cleaner ), way to try out; would be better ground based launch systems, and gliders with an H2O2, ( momentary full on / off solinoid ) Fixed rocket Safety Thruster.
    where One "rocket belt" style thruster could be streamlined, as fixed into the spine behind the conpit, ( less to go wrong, super reliable format, higher power to weight )
    where the high expense of the fuel, and catalyst, would deter frivolous use, and promote reserve for instantaneous automated parallel stall recovery, or intermittent situational manual use.

    I have my home in Alabama, USA and been a glider pilot since minimum solo age in USA. I have always been aware that sailplanes are very expensive. I also know they are not produced for the masses. That means there cost can be brought down considerably though manufacturing economies if there is a market and a desire to produce for that market at the cost that is possible. So come on bring your glider factory to Alabama USA and produce real bargains in sailplanes for the world made in Alabama, USA. Love to see a electric powered tractor propeller drive that looks like a ASW19 but cost 10K to buy. And a 2 seater like a ASK21 for 25K for not only the market of the USA but the world . Yeah, gliders do not ride the wind nor are they powered by it. Little fact checking might have been nice.

    • @bruce2357
      @bruce2357 8 лет назад

      +Chuck Croston
      Speak for yourself, do some fact checking.
      Mountain waves and ridge lift are absolutely riding the wind.
      The wind is going up faster than the sailplane is coming down, if that's not riding I don't know what is.

    • @chuckcross3985
      @chuckcross3985 8 лет назад

      And what happens if there is no mountain or ridge there. What is the wind going to do for you than? 3 types of lift, thermal, wave or mountain/ridge. Wind is a component of the last 2 but you are not riding the wind itself. The lift is produced by the wind being deflected up the ridge or mountain. And that is also why you never fly on the opposite side of the mountain from the direction of the wind as it then has turned into sink and you sure are not riding sink.

    • @chuckcross3985
      @chuckcross3985 8 лет назад

      BTW, wave lift is different than mountain or ridge lift. Wave soaring is a completely different type of soaring than ridge lift flying is. Look up a guy named Balleka on hefe, he has plenty of videos of him riding ridge lift produced by wind. But with out the ridge he would not be staying up where be is flying.

    • @bruce2357
      @bruce2357 8 лет назад +2

      +Chuck Croston
      I don't have to look up anyone Chuck I started flying sailplanes in 1980. Mountain wave lift is not different than wave lift, it's referred to as mountain wave lift. It's caused by the mountains.
      "But with out the ridge he would not be staying up where be is flying." Well thank you Mr. Obvious I see you are one of those guys that like to throw in stuff that wasn't even in the conversation.
      I know Balleka's videos, I know Bruno's videos and I know sailplanes. I know what ridge lift is, I know what wave lift is, also know as mountain wave lift. I know what thermals are. I've know all of that stuff for 35 years.
      I know that mountain wave lift and ridge lift is definitely riding the wind. Call it what you want, but I know what it is. A sailplane is riding in an ocean of air and if the ocean of air is going up faster than the sailplane is descending you go up. You are riding wind. If you airspeed is 100 knots and you are going into a 120knot wind you are going backwards over the ground at 20knots, again you are riding the wind. A thermal is the same, it's air that's rising faster than the sailplane is descending you are riding the wind. I agree sailplanes are not powered by the wind, they are powered by gravity, but they absolutely are riding the wind.

    • @chuckcross3985
      @chuckcross3985 8 лет назад +1

      +Bruce So the deflection of the air up the mountain or ridge is providing the lift used to stay aloft. It is the updraft of the air caused by the mountain, ridge whatever. It is not the wind itself. And I do believe we are talking semantics here. I fly in S Fl so all we ever fly is thermal except for some stories of guys who got wave lift from lenticular clouds back in the 70's. To use your example of flying backwards which I have done myself in a 1-26. A Super blanik L23 lifts off at about 35 knots more or less. If you have a head on wind of 40 knots and you are sitting in the Blanik on the ground; what happens?

  • @mozzmann
    @mozzmann 8 лет назад +36

    The Media needs to get this correct Sail Planes or Glider's are NOT repeat NOT powered by the wind as inferenced but they are Solar powered, the Sun heats the terrain creating thermal up drafts, remember the Aircraft is flying downhill all the time BUT if the Air it is flying in is ascending faster than the craft is descending then a rise in altitude is the result.
    Soaring is an eco friendly sports , and now with electric self launching which can be Solar charged makes it very green indeed.
    Oh I wish I could get back into Soaring other than FPV R/C.

      You left off mountain waves and ridge lift, which are not caused by terrain heating.

    • @mozzmann
      @mozzmann 8 лет назад +2

      Actually they are Bruce, remember that Wind is causes by heating in one place and cooling in another and the displacement of Air between , thus moving air stream which collides with a Mountain or coastal ridge and is forced upwards can and in fact is created by thermal activity.

    • @bruce2357
      @bruce2357 8 лет назад +6

      We were talking about thermals. Sustained winds that cause mountain waves and ridge lifts area caused by air pressure differentials, not updrafts. Wind is caused by a complex process of pressure differentials, difference in air temperature on different regions of the planet, the coriolis effect, the ocean is not considered terrain and yet has a huge effect on weather. Falling rain causes winds, that's not the heating of terrain. Yes I am aware of the fact that the sun fuels the weather on earth, but it's not because of thermals. Heating of air is one thing, a rising bubble of air known as a thermal is another. I studied weather back in 1980 when I started flying sailplanes, I know all about thermals, mountain waves and ridge lift.

      +Bruce Yes but the Wind as we know it IS created by Thermal activity pure and simple , ie Temperature difference from place to place creating a pressure difference and thus wind.
      This is a pressure difference and that is initiated by thermal activity that translates to a wind or more correctly an air mass moving from one place to another and if there is a mountain range of coastal ridge then low level lift is created.
      Mountain wave is similarly created by Thermal activity and then enhanced by it where the pressure ridge forces the air mass upwards BUT that air mass cools and descends and depending on the range can bounce from the valley floor picking up more thermal energy because it triggers more thermal activity ( sometimes you can have an Air mass that is hot and wants to rise but there is a cold layer above that stops it , ann then you get a wave bouncing then trigger's this additional rising air that adds to the wave propagation gaining more height.
      This is why sometimes when you see Lenni's or Lenticular cloud formations they can often be seen stacked up 4 or 5 and well away from the actual mountain range as well
      This is ALL created by Thermal activity which can be a localised like a whirl Wind too a reasonable "thermal" any thing up to 300Ft to 1000 Ft across to a thermal mass over the state of Texas drawing in air in the afternoon ie generating a wind from the Gulf of Mexico drawing in moisture and can create storms too.
      A classic example would be the " Fremantle Doctor" in West Australia , it is ALL created by thermal activity or temperature difference.
      You need to go back to Soaring school

      +mozzmann - "Yes but the Wind as we know it IS created by Thermal activity pure and simple"
      - If wind is made by thermals, and gasoline is made from oil, why is it commonplace to say our cars run on gas instead of oil? Or maybe my car runs on ancient decomposed animal remains, and gliders are powered by fusion.

    it's fun to have an electric powered glider. there is nothing wrong with the electric motor. the big project is the battery?. (1) weight, (2) leveling time, (3) range, (4) endurance, and (5) durability. as you can see, there are big problems (1) the weight of the battery must be reduced a lot. (2) recharging the battery must be as fast as tanks and faster. (3) the range must be increased much much much more in terms of time and miles. (4) endurance the world's toughest marathon. (5) durable you should detonate a 2 ton bomb without it breaking. today's batteries are reasonably good but can be even better than best.

    You could go up with the motor. And when you're on top, you dont need to carry the weight of the fuel anymore. With batteries, you'll still carry them if they're empty

      weight is a good thing for better glide. think like this: you throw a cotton ball in to the wind; you throw a baseball in to the wind. think about the result. Ballast is a common thing in gliders. Built in with the batteries plus it provides the self launch. no brainer.

      Tom Kelsall nope, there’s these columns of rising air called thermals that can keep gliders in the air for hours. When you fly on airplanes and hit turbulence, you are flying through thermals. There’s also mountain waves that have brought gliders up past 50k feet with no motor power! Gliding is an incredible way to fly.

    A quarter-million euros is overpriced, I guess the creators pay themselves huge salaries. There is a two-seater motorized sail plane for only 150k usd.

    And then you suddenly realize you made your sail plane twice as heavy with the immense battery weight, increasing your stall-speed and reducing your glide ratio.

    Man, they're really cool, but.... a quarter of a million bucks?? Thass jiss tooo much monnnee!! No, really, why so damned expensive? Is it early in production, and they have to get their investment back, are the raw materials that expensive to obtain, ....I just can't see charging THAT much for one.

      A glider's main source of 'power' is gravity......

    • @mikeholt7881
      @mikeholt7881 7 лет назад

      Yes, Kelev, altitude is potential energy for the glider...it must be towed or otherwise powered to get to altitude. THEN, its 'power' is gravity. Research 'glide ratio'...........
