- Easily one of the top dogs out there in 2023 regarding K5LA horns!! Awesome narrow font K5LA on P40DC #816. With the Chargers looming in the near future the time is now to catch these supreme horns before they're gone...
Caught the 816 leading Amtrak #11 the Coast Starlight several times in late 2022 including a chase from Moorpark to LA with a legit engineer on the pipes!

816 still sounds just as great as ever. It's a real shame that time is running out for it. I just hope it can be sold elsewhere and continue running for some other railroad after it's gone from Amtrak.
Time ran out too soon on 816, crashed & derailed on its side yesterday while leading the Cali Zephyr. It'll be scrapped. Rest in Peace the K5LA that has been phenomenal. 2:49

I love 816. I had it on my train (California Zephyr) for a rlly long time and I always enjoyed it every time I saw it. I wanna see 816 again I miss it

Last time I saw it was in January 2020 on the Zephyr. I even remember seeing it with 90208 on the Amfleets on 790 (I believe 565, 572 or 583) when it still had a confident sounding hybrid K5LA in 2014 even before 90208 was refurbished.
Surprised it was blasting its horn in the Santa Susanna Pass like that considering there's no at-grade crossing there.
Is 816 still on the western long distance routes?
Chargers won’t have same horns?
Chargers use 3rd Gen K5LA’s, which have a different sounding tone than 1st and 2nd Gen. 3rd gens sound closer to a hybrid K5.
NO, the Chargers aren't and won't sound not even close to the older horns unless they get something other then Raised Letter horns which I don't see ever happening any times soon.
@@AmtrakandAWVRFan A few of them do have the hybrid style of that horn so far.
@@natesmainlinevidsIt’s still the Raised Letter version of the Hybrid but it’s still refreshing to see a Charger wearing something other the the Standard RL K5LA
