My speculation is that Queen Sofia was not happy in her marriage because of King Juan Carlos infidelities, so she poured her love on her children and grand children. There are numerous royal consorts throughout Europe, most of them from very ordinary backgrounds, who have absolutely risen to the task assigned to them and who are much beloved as a result. Sofia is not only a regina emerita (not a queen dowager, as her husband is still living), but was herself a woman of the blood royal and a king's daughter. She has been through more upheaval and scandal in her lifetime than most non-royals. If her son and daughter-in-law cannot or will not at the very minimum treat her with respect and some deference in public (even QEII gave her own mother a good deal of deference through most of her reign), then they will suffer disrespect and disapproval themselves, in a country whose modern monarchy is literally still only on its second sovereign.
Your story forgets to mention when the queen appears crying at the awards ceremony and the real reason. The queen was giving the award to Emilio Lora-Tamayo, this man is sick, so the queen felt very moved, apart from that she has a sister who has cognitive difficulties due to her age. Reading these comments below, I'm shocked at how few people can see what is very clear to me in these pictures. Queen Sophia took over the role as Mother for those girls. In most every picture you can tell she is either holding them, walking them or has her hand on a shoulder. The youngest daughter even took her hand off her shoulder, but couldn't keep her from relentlessly putting right back on. She seems to be very controlling about her role with the girls. Look at her face in many pictures. To me, it's creepy. I easily see how Queen Letizia just wants to raise her own girls and fine, a Grandmothers love is wonderful, but this is a messed up relationship and I have to wonder why.

May be the correct terms are both of them are Queen Consort as a wife of a reigning monarchs (Kings) however Queen Sofia is from a Royal Family her self, she a royal princess before her marriage to spain and Queen Leticia is coming from a Commoner background family. The only reigning Queen that still alive now is only Queen Margareth II of Denmark after Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain passed away. HM Queen Sofia is the emeritus (retired)queen here in Spain we don’t use the title Queen mother as in the UK.HM Letizia is Queen consort (wife of ruling the King). HM Letizia behaves towards HM Sofia AND the rest of her husband’s family because they weren’t either friendly or welcoming when she first arrived, referring to her as the maid.
It is time for her to move on. She is queen and must behave like one.

I don't know them but it certainly can't be easy to make one's way in an entitled family especially if one's mother-in-law is lonely and the family has a checkered reputation. Who can say whether or not Sofia treats her daughter in law as an equal or a serf. It must be complicated.
Looking at the photos pictured in this video, Queen Sofia seemed to push for a more dominant role in the lives of the princesses and seemed to push their mother, Queen Letizia, to the background.
But, it is a blessing to have access to multiple generations, so I hope they're able to work things out because there is no reason to be disrespectful and to mistreat Queen Sofia.

My speculation is that Queen Sofia was not happy in her marriage because of King Juan Carlos infidelities, so she poured her love on her children and grand children. It is unbecoming of _any_ royal figure to air personal conflicts in public or where such incidents are likely to be made known to the public. There are numerous royal consorts throughout Europe, most of them from very ordinary backgrounds, who have absolutely risen to the task assigned to them and who are much beloved as a result. Sofia is not only a regina emerita (not a queen dowager, as her husband is still living), but was herself a woman of the blood royal and a king's daughter. She has been through more upheaval and scandal in her lifetime than most non-royals. If her son and daughter-in-law cannot or will not at the very minimum treat her with respect and some deference in public (even QEII gave her own mother a good deal of deference through most of her reign), then they will suffer disrespect and disapproval themselves, in a country whose modern monarchy is literally still only on its second sovereign.
Your story forgets to mention when the queen appears crying at the awards ceremony and the real reason. The queen was giving the award to Emilio Lora-Tamayo, this man is sick, so the queen felt very moved, apart from that she has a sister who has cognitive difficulties due to her age. The queen was not crying for what you said in your story.

Reading these comments below, I'm shocked at how few people can see what is very clear to me in these pictures. Queen Sophia took over the role as Mother for those girls. In most every picture you can tell she is either holding them, walking them or has her hand on a shoulder. The youngest daughter even took her hand off her shoulder, but couldn't keep her from relentlessly putting right back on. She seems to be very controlling about her role with the girls. Look at her face in many pictures. To me, it's creepy. I easily see how Queen Letizia just wants to raise her own girls and fine, a Grandmothers love is wonderful, but this is a messed up relationship and I have to wonder why.

May be the correct terms are both of them are Queen Consort as a wife of a reigning monarchs (Kings) however Queen Sofia is from a Royal Family her self, she a royal princess before her marriage to spain and Queen Leticia is coming from a Commoner background family. The only reigning Queen that still alive now is only Queen Margareth II of Denmark after Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain passed away. However she is now hold a title of a queen mother (Queen Dowager) as she abdicated her Throne to her eldest son now King Frederik X of Denmark.
