I freaking love you guys. Babu was spot on about why monkeys are still around despite the fact that we evolved from them. I love how honest he is and he's always making the others laugh. I don't think anybody should be surprised by how well they grasp the concept. Like they said, even the village idiot can acquire power through knowledge😂. All you need is curiosity and an open mind. I'd venture to say they have more of both. More than most of us do. Babu was partially spot on, although all of the monkeys are still different than their ancestors meaning even they are still evolving. But yeah it was nice to see their reaction to this video. The video they were shown was well done and easy enough to teach someone the basics who might not even heard of evolution.
They have a really good grasp of how evolution works, subtle changes over extremely long periods of time, adaptation to different environments and how primates have branched off to become different but similar species like ourselves. Nailed it! 👍

Very gratified by that. People who scoff at evolution almost unanimously seem to believe scientists are saying, for example, that one day a monkey gave birth to a human, or that a reptile suddenly hatched out of a fish egg. And they'd be *right* to scoff at that, if it was what scientists were actually saying, but it isn't. Unfortunately, even the, "small changes via mutation and natural selection over millions of years" description stumps a lot of people, since it's very challenging to wrap your head around just how long millions of years actually is. I wish there was one very clear and easy to understand lesson on evolution that was taught in every school on Earth, so that we'd all be as close to having the same concept of the subject as possible.
I love that Babu corrected Raeen about the "village fools" comment, even though we knew he said it in jest. But that makes me curious -- it would be wonderful if you could have them react to their first videos on the channel! To see how far they've really come in not only worldly knowledge, but confidence on camera and personality. It's really been fun watching them progress and grow over the years.
The sparrows in my parent's garden are huge, they're like 150% the size of the sparrows I see in the city. But they've been feeding them excessively for thirty years now. I'd like to believe that over time these sparrows (one generation per year) micro-evolved to the abundance of food.
You are likely correct. Body size is one of the first things to be affected by resource availability. Poor availability leads to multiple, smaller creatures, while abundance allows for larger, fewer creatures. Your parents may not be actually helping, in terms of Nature, as the descendants of these birds in the wild may have a harder time. Meanwhile, as long as people feed birds, perhaps they will become a thing of their own, a sub-type living among us, adapted to us, and will be fine. I don't judge. Nature is neutral to our concerns, but we can think. We are natural creatures, so... Maybe we are the conscience of Nature on Earth.
The wild (or otherwise previously human fed, before your parents) population of birds were likely larger than the average city bird (because smaller populations would have been the ones to eventually move into cities once they were built), but I don't doubt they've contributed a bit to the biggening of one family of sparrows haha.
A perfect example is the different skin colours and features all over the world. A person with dark skin is not affected by ultraviolet light as much as someone with light skin, like blonde or red haired people. And it works the opposite way around. We are all humans, but our ancestors adapted to survive in different conditions. Life is both fascinating and amazing.

@@coot1925 You are absolutely right. The pigment absorbs the ultraviolet light BEFORE it goes deeper into the skin, and the less of it, the more the light can penetrate. (It has been some time since I looked into this so take it as a broad look.) Peoples who live in a place with lots of snow and ice also have darker skin because of the reflection all around increases the amount of light getting to the person.
Humanity is composed many subspecies who compete with eachother for resources. Even academics blind themselves to this fact. I am further diverged from a Chinaman than the difference between Wolves, Dingo and Coyote.
Some are willfully ignorant, but others just don’t understand it, admittedly, it does sound like a pretty outrageous idea if you don’t build up from the basics and are exposed only to the broad ideas first. Understanding the concepts of inheritance, natural selection, evolutionary pressures, mutations, are needed first, that’s how they teach it in school.
IQ is genetically inherited and it's just a fact that an IQ in the bottom 50% of the population just isn't adequate for comprehending something like evolution.
Best example to start this lesson if you are unfamiliar with it would be to study skin color. Humans that lived in lands with extreme sun developed darkest skin to protect them from the sun. When some people moved to lands with less sun they need less protection from the sun. When people moved to lands with very little sun their skin became very pale or light. This process took thousands and thousands of years or more. All living species on Earth adapt and change to survive where they live or become extinct. Nature changes slowly and gives time for species to change. Humans destroy where animals live and they do not have thousands of years to change. This is why we preserve animal habitats to save them and stop animal extinction.

Right. I like that they got an informative video. But a more basic explanation of evolution, from the first sparks of life onwards, would be great to show them too. How the concept of genes that are advantageous leads to the wider spreading of those genes, (survival the fittest). The idea that evolution is an ongoing process, and happens everywhere. Still, good that they acquired this knowledge, and their grasps of the basic idea was spot-on. Raeen seeing how crucial Darwin was for the understanding of evolution. I hope more of these videos will follow. Great channel, endearing characters.
the primordial soup is technically abiogenesis. That's a different process from evolution. Abiogenesis is still valid of course, they're two different fields of research.
beginning of carbon based life and the changes in carbon life forms over time are two different things. Bear in mind, that DNA is at it's core a molecule made up of Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen. To think that abiogenesis isn't valid is like saying chemistry doesn't work.

My understanding it's directly proportional w/ 2 factors - how long the organism lives - the longer, the slower the evolution process, the shorter the faster. And also environmental factors which cause the need to evolve in order to survive. Finches live 10 years - more or less humans live about 77.5 years, by the end of 2024 that's supposed to be raised to 79.25 (in the USA, anyway - I know country to country this varies on many factors). Must be an environmental change - global warming, maybe? Spurring the evolution.

please explain to them - or find another video that explains their ancestors stayed in the area they now currently live, resulting in either lighter than their ancestors who came there, or darker skin if their ancestors came from more northern areas, because their skin required less (if it lightened) or more (if it darkened) protection from the sun. but over thousands, likely hundreds of thousands of years. Just as my ancestor's skin lightened to better absorb the meager sun exposure to be able to better make vitamin D. I know that especially Babu was confused by the differences.

The classical creationist question came up: 'If humans evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?' :D And Babu delivered a really good explanation. As I like to put it: Because the world still has space for monkeys. Totally right: It's diversity. Evolution uses its possibilities, and 'human' just isn't the only possibility monkey evolution could go. What seemed to fly a bit over their heads, though, were all the genetical terms. There might still be great potential for an interesting react, to show them a bit more about how genes, DNA, and heredity work.

Babu is very right when it comes to the issue of other species of monkeys/apes. The fact is, we are a single branch of the family that adapted specifically for versatility and intelligence. It took very specific circumstances for that to happen. That isn't to say our cousins are any less evolved. Evolution isn't a linear path toward the things we consider "advanced". A chimpanzee is doing perfectly well at what it does. In short, it's very good at being a chimpanzee, so why be a human?
Humans didn't evolve from monkeys, we just share a common ancestor (as well as with any other living being), but apes are probably the closest animals that we share a common ancestor with. Also, there's a common misconception that evolution means to become smarter through time, which is not the case. Otherwise, bacteria would no longer exist if that were the case. If an animal is well adapted to its environment, it will have less mutations through time that those organisms that are in very unstable environments.
@@martiddy You got a lot wrong, but you are aiming right. Apes are a derived form of monkey, meaning we., too, are a derived monkey. Sharing a common ancestor means we were all once that that creature. That creature diversified, and most of their lineage stayed tree-dwelling, fur-covered monkeys, while our line became more ground-dwelling apes, who became upright walkers, lost our fur, etc.. Evolution does NOT contain the idea of "becoming smarter over time." An organism only gains intelligence if it would help it be better adapted to find food or escape danger, which is why there is an intelligence race in the Animal Kingdom since ancient times, for prey to outsmart predation, before predators outsmart them. An organism well adapted to its environment does NOT have fewer mutations than those in unstable environments. It is that, in a stable environment, mutations may not rise to the level of being helpful, while in an unstable situation, old mutations may suddenly have new value, and seem to "suddenly" emerge, while they have been there for millenia, simply unneeded. I mean no disrespect. One of my minors in college is Biology, and my mother is a professor of Education in Biology.

Humans by direct classification are still monkeys, we're great apes, which are a subset of apes, which are a subset of monkeys, which are a subset of primates, and so on. :)
Homo Sapiens are apes. Apes are basically monkeys without tales. Like gorillas, black apes and us. There are around 20 ape species and over 300 monkey species. Only Homo Sapiens and gorillas are not suited to climb in trees, but genetically, we are closest related to chimpanses. All primates have the same ancestors, so the question why there are still apes when man evolved to Homo Sapiens, makes no sense. And there were parallel apes to us, that evolved into human like apes, like Neanderthals. They are just extinct now.
Not a bad explanation! I also think it helps to remember that "monkeys" is a category, not a specific animal. I find that some people start to get it if you ask, "If we evolved from mammals, why are there still mammals?" It's a lot more obvious how dumb of a question that is when you use a word that everybody knows is a broad category rather than a particular creature. We didn't evolve _from_ mammals or monkeys. We _are_ a species of mammal/monkey. The funny thing is, the particular species of monkey we all evolved from _isn't_ alive today, and no scientist is claiming it is. If creationists used the term "monkey" the way scientists mean it, they wouldn't even have an argument. They only get away with it because some people don't know any better and don't see the way they're being manipulated with word games.
They make many correct assumptions. Also consider the bird being very diverged small dinosaur, feathers are just very diverged fluffy reptilian scales. So do not consider dinosaurs to be entirely extinct, birds are true and valid group of dinosaurs. No matter how weird it seems, the closest living relative to a bird would be a crocodyle (crocodyle not being true dinosaur, but related group - "cousin").
I love that you are sharing science videos with them. I do wonder, though, what their understanding of genes and DNA was before this video, as this wasn't the most base level material. I would be very interested to know what biology they have learned, either in school, through books, or through this channel.
It may help to think of it this way. Asking, "Why are there still monkeys if we evolved from monkeys?" is the same as asking, "Why are there still mammals if we evolved from mammals?" "Monkey" is a category, not a particular animal. We didn't evolve _from_ monkeys _into_ humans. We are just one of the many species of monkeys that exist today.
Better to explain in terms of animal husbandry, which they would know firsthand from selective breeding of cattle and dogs. Then simply add that nature also exerts selective pressure, it doesn't have to be a human farmer.
Sir, make them watch : -The history of Cold War. -Charles Darwin's biography. -The history of British empire. -Selective breeding. -Health related topics which is useful for them. -How penguin evolved from flying birds. -How whales evolved from mammals.

99% of western academics deny that speciation has occured within the modern homo genus, despite the fact that different human races are further diverged than different canine species like Wolf, Dog, Coyote and Dingo. If a dingo is its own species, why not an aboriginal also their own species? I will tell you why: POLITICS AND DOGMA.
What this didn't do was to explain the single species origin, which it claimed at the start. It would be good to show them something that proved the development of life via the examination of the DNA fingerprint and species development now they have this broad overview.

Just fyi for anybody who was taught the biological species concept in high school (that a species is determined by ability to interbreed and create viable offspring), nobody really advocates for that methodology anymore. Two super closely related animals might not be able to reproduce while two much more distantly related ones can. It's just not a very meaningful distinction.
I watched a group of Muslim guys watching a video on evolution once. Most of them were fascinated, but the Imam said "this is dangerous to our religion". My view is this...if your beliefs are undone by provable facts then you should rethink your beliefs, not dismiss the facts. Many Christians believe the world has only existed for 6,000 years despite all the proof to the contrary. As they say, "ya can't teach stupid ". This video isn't a very good on for explaining evolution honestly. there is no "micro" or "macro," it's JUST evolution. The difference is just in time frames, but those fames can be anywhere from 10,000 years to 3 billion years. And even then, evolution can also result in changes or reorganization of ones organs. Spleen, gall bladder, wisdom teeth, and appendix are useless organs that we no longer need because the food we eat is healthier and more processed than our cave dwelling ancestors had. You can lose all of these organs, and still lead a normal life and lifespan. Vestigial organs/limbs/bones are the biggest pieces of evidence for evolution among other things.

And also interesting was how Babu combined both his belief of god and the fact of evolution, when he explained to Raeen how a certain breed of monkeys was "blessed" to evolve into humans, while the other monkey breeds stayed the same. Here is hoping that that they will get a video that will explain that question: Why did so many species stayed apparently the same over the same long time-span? A video that will show that humans are still evolving, how the various regions where people life form their morphology and other adaptation (People high in the mountains can do with less oxygen, etc.)

Babu has to realize that when you talk about science you have to leave your faith outside the conversation. Evolution in and of itself disproves religious explanations of how humans came to be and saying "God blessed some monkeys to evolve and others not to evolve" is just so very wrong. Every species on the planet right now is the result of hundreds of thousands or millions of years of evolution and every species is continuing to evolve, those that don't keep up with their rapidly changing environments will go extinct and most of those extinctions are a direct result of human activity, global warming being the major factor.

I hope I can explain something for the boys: they were speaking about the monkeys and humans, and how some monkeys evolved into humans while others did not. The truth is that all current monkey species and humans evolved from common ancestors. Monkeys did not turn into humans, as the current humans and monkeys all came from an older ancestor. Also, I hope the boys take advantage of the income from this channel and go to school: it opens so many doors!
How long do you want the videos to be? The understand the dating of fossils, geographic layering, species migration and who knows what else, would be very involving. The good thing is, for anyone curious enough to understand the evidence, or proof as you put it, all the information is readily available.
Evolution is a fact. There are few things in this world that have better and clearer evidence to support it. A theory is the best explanation science can develop to explain facts like evolution. So, there is indeed both the Fact of evolution and a Theory of Evolution. Information and evidence are readily available should you be willing to look past your preconceptions.
Scientific theory isn't the same as non-scientific theory. Non-scientific theory: the word "theory" often means an untested hunch, or a guess without supporting evidence. Scientific theory: has nearly the opposite meaning. A theory is a well-substantiated explanation of an aspect of the natural world that can incorporate laws, hypotheses and facts.

It is frustrating. I keep hoping that they will work with a science educator to identify a progression of high-quality videos on a variety of topics so that as their knowledge base increases, they get ones with added complexity. I suspect that they might not know enough themselves to differentiate between the best, most up-to-date videos, at the right level, produced by highly reputable sources, and others that aren't as well researched.

Poor availability leads to multiple, smaller creatures, while abundance allows for larger, fewer creatures. Your parents may not be actually helping, in terms of Nature, as the descendants of these birds in the wild may have a harder time. Meanwhile, as long as people feed birds, perhaps they will become a thing of their own, a sub-type living among us, adapted to us, and will be fine. I don't judge. Nature is neutral to our concerns, but we can think. We are natural creatures, so... Maybe we are the conscience of Nature on Earth.
The wild (or otherwise previously human fed, before your parents) population of birds were likely larger than the average city bird (because smaller populations would have been the ones to eventually move into cities once they were built), but I don't doubt they've contributed a bit to the biggening of one family of sparrows haha.
A perfect example is the different skin colours and features all over the world.
A person with dark skin is not affected by ultraviolet light as much as someone with light skin, like blonde or red haired people.
And it works the opposite way around.

@@coot1925 You are absolutely right. The pigment absorbs the ultraviolet light BEFORE it goes deeper into the skin, and the less of it, the more the light can penetrate. (It has been some time since I looked into this so take it as a broad look.) Peoples who live in a place with lots of snow and ice also have darker skin because of the reflection all around increases the amount of light getting to the person.

Some are willfully ignorant, but others just don’t understand it, admittedly, it does sound like a pretty outrageous idea if you don’t build up from the basics and are exposed only to the broad ideas first. Understanding the concepts of inheritance, natural selection, evolutionary pressures, mutations, are needed first, that’s how they teach it in school.
I'm amazed they are being given a 10 minute course which can normally take months.
IQ is genetically inherited and it's just a fact that an IQ in the bottom 50% of the population just isn't adequate for comprehending something like evolution.
Best example to start this lesson if you are unfamiliar with it would be to study skin color. Humans that lived in lands with extreme sun developed darkest skin to protect them from the sun. When some people moved to lands with less sun they need less protection from the sun. When people moved to lands with very little sun their skin became very pale or light. This process took thousands and thousands of years or more. All living species on Earth adapt and change to survive where they live or become extinct. Nature changes slowly and gives time for species to change. Humans destroy where animals live and they do not have thousands of years to change. This is why we preserve animal habitats to save them and stop animal extinction.

the primordial soup is technically abiogenesis. That's a different process from evolution. Abiogenesis is still valid of course, they're two different fields of research.
beginning of carbon based life and the changes in carbon life forms over time are two different things. Bear in mind, that DNA is at it's core a molecule made up of Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen. To think that abiogenesis isn't valid is like saying chemistry doesn't work.

For complex veterans, it can take anywhere between a few thousand to a few million years for special to accor. Sometimes it can be sooner depending on the specific species. In 2017, scientists observed a new finch species emerging in real-time.
My understanding it's directly proportional w/ 2 factors - how long the organism lives - the longer, the slower the evolution process, the shorter the faster. And also environmental factors which cause the need to evolve in order to survive. Finches live 10 years - more or less humans live about 77.5 years, by the end of 2024 that's supposed to be raised to 79.25 (in the USA, anyway - I know country to country this varies on many factors). Must be an environmental change - global warming, maybe? Spurring the evolution.
Only microorganisms live and die fast enough to observe evolution directly, I think.

please explain to them - or find another video that explains their ancestors stayed in the area they now currently live, resulting in either lighter than their ancestors who came there, or darker skin if their ancestors came from more northern areas, because their skin required less (if it lightened) or more (if it darkened) protection from the sun. but over thousands, likely hundreds of thousands of years. Just as my ancestor's skin lightened to better absorb the meager sun exposure to be able to better make vitamin D. I know that especially Babu was confused by the differences.

Babu is very right when it comes to the issue of other species of monkeys/apes. The fact is, we are a single branch of the family that adapted specifically for versatility and intelligence. It took very specific circumstances for that to happen. That isn't to say our cousins are any less evolved. Evolution isn't a linear path toward the things we consider "advanced". A chimpanzee is doing perfectly well at what it does. In short, it's very good at being a chimpanzee, so why be a human?

Humans didn't evolve from monkeys, we just share a common ancestor (as well as with any other living being), but apes are probably the closest animals that we share a common ancestor with. Also, there's a common misconception that evolution means to become smarter through time, which is not the case. Otherwise, bacteria would no longer exist if that were the case. If an animal is well adapted to its environment, it will have less mutations through time that those organisms that are in very unstable environments.

Sharing a common ancestor means we were all once that that creature. That creature diversified, and most of their lineage stayed tree-dwelling, fur-covered monkeys, while our line became more ground-dwelling apes, who became upright walkers, lost our fur, etc..
Evolution does NOT contain the idea of "becoming smarter over time." An organism only gains intelligence if it would help it be better adapted to find food or escape danger, which is why there is an intelligence race in the Animal Kingdom since ancient times, for prey to outsmart predation, before predators outsmart them.
An organism well adapted to its environment does NOT have fewer mutations than those in unstable environments. It is that, in a stable environment, mutations may not rise to the level of being helpful, while in an unstable situation, old mutations may suddenly have new value, and seem to "suddenly" emerge, while they have been there for millenia, simply unneeded.
I mean no disrespect. One of my minors in college is Biology, and my mother is a professor of Education in Biology.

Homo Sapiens are apes. Apes are basically monkeys without tales. Like gorillas, black apes and us. There are around 20 ape species and over 300 monkey species. Only Homo Sapiens and gorillas are not suited to climb in trees, but genetically, we are closest related to chimpanses.
All primates have the same ancestors, so the question why there are still apes when man evolved to Homo Sapiens, makes no sense.
And there were parallel apes to us, that evolved into human like apes, like Neanderthals. They are just extinct now.
Not a bad explanation! I also think it helps to remember that "monkeys" is a category, not a specific animal. I find that some people start to get it if you ask, "If we evolved from mammals, why are there still mammals?" It's a lot more obvious how dumb of a question that is when you use a word that everybody knows is a broad category rather than a particular creature.
We didn't evolve _from_ mammals or monkeys. We _are_ a species of mammal/monkey. The funny thing is, the particular species of monkey we all evolved from _isn't_ alive today, and no scientist is claiming it is. If creationists used the term "monkey" the way scientists mean it, they wouldn't even have an argument. They only get away with it because some people don't know any better and don't see the way they're being manipulated with word games.

They make many correct assumptions. Also consider the bird being very diverged small dinosaur, feathers are just very diverged fluffy reptilian scales. So do not consider dinosaurs to be entirely extinct, birds are true and valid group of dinosaurs. No matter how weird it seems, the closest living relative to a bird would be a crocodyle (crocodyle not being true dinosaur, but related group - "cousin").
As tis said, animals never evolve out of their clade. We humans are great apes, are primates, are mammals, etc. and essentially are fish.

"Monkey" is a category, not a particular animal. We didn't evolve _from_ monkeys _into_ humans. We are just one of the many species of monkeys that exist today.

Just fyi for anybody who was taught the biological species concept in high school (that a species is determined by ability to interbreed and create viable offspring), nobody really advocates for that methodology anymore. This video isn't a very good on for explaining evolution honestly. there is no "micro" or "macro," it's JUST evolution. The difference is just in time frames, but those fames can be anywhere from 10,000 years to 3 billion years. And even then, evolution can also result in changes or reorganization of ones organs. Spleen, gall bladder, wisdom teeth, and appendix are useless organs that we no longer need because the food we eat is healthier and more processed than our cave dwelling ancestors had. You can lose all of these organs, and still lead a normal life and lifespan. Vestigial organs/limbs/bones are the biggest pieces of evidence for evolution among other things.

And also interesting was how Babu combined both his belief of god and the fact of evolution, when he explained to Raeen how a certain breed of monkeys was "blessed" to evolve into humans, while the other monkey breeds stayed the same. Here is hoping that that they will get a video that will explain that question: Why did so many species stayed apparently the same over the same long time-span? A video that will show that humans are still evolving, how the various regions where people life form their morphology and other adaptation (People high in the mountains can do with less oxygen, etc.)

I keep hoping that they will work with a science educator to identify a progression of high-quality videos on a variety of topics so that as their knowledge base increases, they get ones with added complexity. I suspect that they might not know enough themselves to differentiate between the best, most up-to-date videos, at the right level, produced by highly reputable sources, and others that aren't as well researched.
