"trying to be discrete"
*wears GoPro on head*
hahahaha
I am a long time street photographer here in NYC. I have been shooting the streets of NY for 30 years, I shoot medium format digital, film, FF and APC. Here is my method of shooting street with medium format, before I go out for the day I ask myself what type of day do I want it to be? meaning a fast day or slow day, if I am going to shoot fast events or subjects such as parades, street fairs, motorcycles etc its going to be a fast day. So I will grab one of my faster cameras because I know medium doesn't do so well in fast situations. Now don't get me wrong you can still get some very interesting photos shooting a fast subject with a medium format camera. But if its going to be a day where I am looking for what I call "The Shot" it's going to be a slow day; so I grab my Hassey H5D. Let me explain, when I go out with the Hassey I am looking for that special shot that allows me time to frame, compose and focus quickly. I try to get the shot 60 sec or less and move on, again not saying you can't catch an interesting fast shots. but I find when I am able to take my time, I get some amazing shots and more keepers per say. When I walk down Broadway or in midtown for example and I see the folks handing out flyers or street preformers I will ask them can I take their picture and most will say yes and I get some amazing portraits. When I see a fast shot that my not be suited for the Hassey I pull out my trusty Sony A6000 and pop off some fast shots. There is nothing like the results you get from a medium format especially when you get the "shot" :)
I do a lot of street with the 50r and the 45. Works like a charm. And yes, when stars align, you get some magic shots!
If you think using the GFX was difficult for street photography then you should check out the work of French Press Photographer Eric Bouvet, he uses a 10x8 Woodyman.
I agree you with you a hundred percent. A lot of the comments about the use of the medium format camera I never experience and I was shooting with a Pentax 6 x 7.
Thank you for being so honest during your photowalk.
I agree!! It’s fast, but it’s slow. I think it’s better suited for landscape and product photography. Until the technology advances it will always be a niche camera.
I think the Go Pro does more to stop you from feeling discreet than the camera does. You get great images when you're out without it no matter what you're shooting with. Keep killing it man.
Stop making me want a Fuji! I don't have money haha! Love it though dude. So dope.
Great video. Your street photography videos always make me feel better around shooting street and coming away with almost nothing. It's super hard and you only get it by putting in the work. Most other folks gloss over the fact that there not shooting gold 100% of the time.
For years I shot Street photography with my Pentax 6 x 7 medium format camera which is much bigger than the Fuji GFX 50 S and I never experience any of the problems that you are having with a modern day medium format camera.
the kind of video I was waiting for on your channel :) good job and thanks for the walk!
As a fairly new hobbyist I’m glad to hear a pro just can’t get satisfying angles from what should theoretically be an excellent scene lol
Hi Evan, no surprise in your conclusion, I am a GFX50S owner and love it but I use it for landscape not street. Good that you've explained the ups and downs of it for street and maybe the 50R would suit better. Fair to say though the 63mm is the worst of the GF lenses for AF if you try the 50R get it with the 45mm it's a way faster lens. You are the truth man.
Thanks for the insight! I had a feeling the 63 was one of the more basic ones just off how the files felt but I didn’t want to say that without knowing for sure! I’m really curious about the growth of medium format, I think in the next few years people who are photo centered are going to begin to migrate in this direction more and more
@@RanftEvan I had a quick try with the R at my local camera shop with the 45 on. I didn't like the feel of it in my hand but if I were a street shooter I might think differently. For my general shooting I used to use the X-Pro1 but I now use Leica M9 so I've gone backwards really with manual focus. I have thought recently about getting a 45mm to just have as a general shooting option with my S but what's holding me back is I love my M9s.
I really love the workers photo and I see the STORY there
Pick up a Ricoh GR 3 and try that out for street and cityscape.
I would love to see some more night street Photography from you evan!
Your vlogs are always motivating.
Makes me happy to hear that! Thank you!
Brilliant video mate, lots of good information and inspiration! ❤️❤️
thanks for your videos. did you prefer your experience with the x1d or the gfx? not about technical stuff but your personnal feeling. If you have to get one for you?
Yeah, when "they" finally find a way (without flash) to make a medium format camera that behaves in every way (except for output) like a full frame or apsc (shutter, auto focus, etc...) it will (imo) radically change the game for sports/action/wildlife/street. As it stands, however, medium format is still such a joy to experience when you get the chance, but a guy can dream, can't he?
I try to create great composition in Atlanta but it isnt easy as there arent many people who walk like nyc. The struggle is real
Evan hell yes. I love the street photography challenges. I did a street photography with a GoPro video and it was a riot. It would be awesome to see you use something like a phone or a really cheap option!
Haha the GoPro kinda changes the game! And I like the idea of the iPhone cause it’s something I barely ever use, that’d be a fun video!
Try the GFX 50R which is a smaller more compact version of this medium format camera. The IQ is the exact same which might make this a more discrete street photography camera.
Your photos are exactly like Robert Capa's! So much wow.
Great vid, love the street vids best!
Put a manual lens on, zone focus... good to go. I shoot street around NYC with an a7Rii.. almost never touch AF. F8/F11 and just focus on comp 100%
I really enjoy this. It’s super cool and I may have to do a similar thing for one of my photowalks. Good stuff.
Appreciate you watching!! Glad you liked it 🙏
You seemed hard on yourself...that camera looks amazing and I wish I could get my mits on. You may wanna nab at X-T30 + 35f2 would have been tight in this walkabout. I enjoy that pair daily.
I've been using the XT20 and the 35mm f2 for street photography lately, definitely a killer combo!
You can shoot street with a 1980s point and shoot film camera that has slow autofocus. Medium format digital isn't that slow to focus lol. Higher shutter speeds and focusing on a static object should do the trick
I think the motorcycle guy on the bike being slightly blurry is just fine, adds character ; )
i always push the like button even before watching :)
That’s why y’all are the truth! Thankful for the support!
did anyone else hear a weird noise in the background of the video around the 6:41/6:43 mark? sounds like someone is saying yeahhh or sighing or something
hahah "yeahhh" I did
My wallet and my wife say no new cameras.
So you took medium format camera ,went to places where is almost no people and shot from 20+ meters :DDD I dont know why it didnt work .
My brother lives near your office. Good times.
My man! Inspired me to go out and make some of my first Street photos ever the other day! I love it! I tagged you in my post on Instagram so you can judge for yourself if you taught me well or not 😂
Link Instagram, would love to see them! :)

Thanks for sharing man! I'd love to hear your opinions on experiencing the Leica Q2 or Leica m10 systems
RS Yeah, I enjoy his content and love that he doesn’t get too obsessed with the technical details of cameras. He asked what other cameras we’d like to see him try out so yes I’d love to see him try out Leica Q2 or Leica M ;P
@@RS-Amsterdam I hear dentists have some pretty solid views on Leicas.
Medium format: done
Full frame: done
aps-c: done
When do you try a m4/3? 😂
Yessss ! You made my day
🙏🙏🙏
Maybe you can try one of them M43 camera? I really want to know your thoughts about them =)
Apparently the gfx100 will be getting officially announced in the next few weeks. Will be interesting to see how much things improve on version 2 of the 50s/50r. Maybe the next x100 could be the x100MF. 😀
I like the street photography videos best! Any chance you'd share where you were in the meadow in yesterday's video? I would love to shoot there!
Hey there im based in atlanta and i was wondering if you had any idea of any good locations or street style looks
Any vids on the sony a6400? Thinking about using that for street photography as well
Awesome video again!!!
But you were asking about requests: Please share your steps for exporting and SHARPENING Fuji RAW files with Lightroom. Your images look dope all the time and so the Fuji ones. There is a lot of discussions out there about the file handling with Fuji and Lightroom. That video would help so many people I guess.
Cheers Daniel
GFX is regular Bayer sensor.
What film simulation where you using ?
why not get one of the evf tilt adaptors. I think those can solve some of the issues with people being alarmed in the presence if this big camera. Raising a camera to eye level is something people instintually notice. The size of this camera just aggravates that. I find that usually waist level shoting makes people a lot less aware of the fact that your taking a picture. Maybe because we're more natually aware what our eyes are doing, so if you look downwards instead of straight at them, even they conceptually understand it's the lens that's pointing at them, they're not as nervous.
looking downwards means you hold the camera a lot closer to chest, hence it's a much easier and steadier hold too. I honestly don't know why street photographers don't do this more often.
Atlanta seems like a smaller size version of nyc but cleaner with nicer people lol
We in here!!!
I wonder how much better the 50R would be with the 35mm equivalent. Much smaller setup. Then maybe try setting the focus manually with the hyper focal distance. If you don’t like that size then you just need to use a compact camera like your Fuji apsc
I also think the 50r would be the better GFX camera for street photography for most people, but you can hardly call the 50r + the 45mm a "much smaller setup" than the 50s with the 63mm.
While the 50r is slimmer, it's actually a bit wider than the 50s. The 45mm is also noticably longer than the 63mm.
So yes, the 50r is a bitt smaller overall, but for all intents and purposes it's still a quite large camera. For something substantially smaller, you would indeed have to go for something like the X-Pro2 or the X100F, like you mentioned in your comment.
I hate those scooters lol. In LA in numerous cities they litter the streets everywhere. Nice video 👌
ha, luke and exposure got a shout out!
Cool dude 💪
6:34 amazing shot! :)
A huge part of taking great pictures is Shooting Raw... Not really =P But Inspiration IS. Sometimes you just dont have the right feeling, its like a writers block but for photography... The shots look crips and nice af tho!
nice video my man! gonna try and get out this summer and shoot some street shots myself! GoPro on the head and all haha
how do u edit ur blacks? they r so good..
You look like a younger George Clooney :-)
I don't think he knows who left a comment! Hi Benjamin😊
Sometimes we miss focus and sometimes that’s OK.
You're so lucky you can wander around without having to stress about being chased by security or robbed by thugs
... waiting for an elevator or what ever...😂
When’s the Los Angeles trip ?
Maybe it'S not the camera...it'S you that's struggling
Aye first 500! Hey evan, i have a question is there any online courses that can/may teach photography. I just can't afford classes. Also that frame slideback at the end was pretty neat i thought i was seeing things hahahahahaha then was like "wait no no thats actually moving"
Hmmm checkout my last video and go to the description, skillshare is a sponsor and you can get a free trial 👍
The 50R would make more sense if you want a street photography medium format camera imo.
Yeah for sure, I still think the general speed would be a hindrance (if it performs like the S) however the R is smaller and could solve some of the things I mentioned about the camera not being lowkey enough (for street photos)
@@RanftEvan The R is thinner but also wider. It actually feels bigger in the hands. I have the S ( for 1 1/2 year already ) , and tried the R, but the S is much more pleasing to the hand, with a good grip. Too bad U rented the 63mm, as I commented in your last video, it is the "worst" of them.
What crop are those images 4:5? And then you add borders? Great video once again!
Pretty sure they are square cropped
@@kentaaruga4765 1:1 you mean
@@valantisjpg same thing
4:23 thought the water said Fuji :)
Correct insert video at 2:34?
Don't make me believe that you've imagine a single second that a medium format could be the ideal camera for street photographie... Or this means that you never ever shot street photographie !
Should have gotten a Garmin .....longer lasting battery
👌
🙏🙏🙏
I don't think that speed is always needed for street photography. Sure it's nice but with a camera you're forced to slow down, in the same ways that film does. You can't react as fast so you spend more time composing particular ideas. You'll catch less moments for sure, but you'll gain different ideas as a result.
Joe O'Connor I fully agree with that. A few days ago I had the opportunity to test a Hasselblad 501cm with a Leaf Aptus-II 10s digital back. Compared to my own A7 III this System was very Slow but man, I Never enjoyed taking pictures so much.
Try the 50 3.5. Maybe zone focus. Maybe try auto focus wide tracking in single shot focus mode. Sure maybe it's not a "street photography" camera but look at all the people running around with DSLRs saying they are landscape photographers. Also remember grabbing a camera and going on foot patrol making snapshots is not street photography. That is simply photography on the street. Put some effort into it.
you should probably take ur own time with the cam and try to take pics again, since sometime u ight get gr8 pics but it seems rushed since ur running out of time
its a studio camera
I guess it’s veeery big for street.
Sony a7iii
She won't forgive a mistake.
first!
Real MVP!
Hi Evan......I’ve been doing street photography with the GFX for almost two years.....if you care to see some of my work, I can reply back with a link...thank you...sal patalano
Z7 next? At least your lenses won't become obsolete.
That's an expensive camera to take snapshots with
$5,500 camera and using it in street photography. Wow.
I also hate those scooters.
Why don’t you like your forehead?
Hey evan i wanna say your colour grading for vloging its not eye catching
Just buy a go pro. It does 4k
I cannot put thumbs up for you.You talk more than you show something.
You talk to much in the video.
