    Despite The Rock's often questionable, safe, and underwhelming film choices, I never wanted him to fail as an actor. He has all the resources in the world to choose projects that truly showcase his talent, if he’s willing to push beyond his comfort zone. I'm genuinely glad he found Benny Safdie and A24, a trio I never imagined coming together, but here we are. The Rock needed this, the audience needed this, and I’m absolutely rooting for him to succeed. This movie is a test for his range as an actor, it's so exciting 🙌

      I don't understand why being safe is a bad thing. He doesn't have to act at all He does it because he enjoys it. If he wants to take safe rolls and long as having fun and making money and people enjoy then that's all that matters. Of course it's going to be critics but you think that really matters to him at the end of the day as long as his family is taken care of, him having fun, and his fans like me continue to go see them. Every good actor has bad movies and every good actor has been in some roles that are very similar to each other. I just can't stand people having problems or someone does something for the entertainment aspect versus always the technicality. He's not obligated to be in movies where he has to act like he used to. He's at the level on Hollywood. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant. People need to understand he can choose what he wants to do. But I am intrigued when he takes on a role like this. So I'm intrigued to see what he does with this. ✨💯

    • @thereallesgrossman
      @thereallesgrossman Month ago +25

      @@aaroncarroll8992 I’m not saying there’s anything inherently wrong with playing it safe, but doesn’t The Rock risk locking himself into the same kind of role forever? Think about it, Arnold Schwarzenegger had The Terminator, Sylvester Stallone had both Rocky and Rambo, and Bruce Willis will always be remembered for Die Hard. Those characters became cultural touchstones. But what about The Rock? Can anyone truly point to a single film of his that reshaped the action genre or left a lasting impression as a leading role? That’s where the issue lies. Despite being one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood, his filmography often feels like a loop, repetitive, formulaic, and ultimately forgettable. It's not that he lacks talent or screen presence, he clearly has both in spades but most of his projects seem engineered for mass appeal rather than legacy. It’s like he’s stuck playing different versions of the same indestructible, wisecracking hero in bloated blockbusters that blur together over time. There’s rarely a moment that truly stands out or challenges him as an actor. At the end of the day, commercial success is great, but if he’s aiming for a lasting cinematic legacy, he might need to break away from the comfort zone and take a leap into riskier, more nuanced territory. He got an opportunity to be an actor after finishing with his wrestling career and up until this point, he hadn't used his acting skills all that properly because he just doesn't try hard enough. Which makes The Smashing Machine feels like a breath of fresh air, this is what he needs. Sure he can choose he wants to do but at the same time, he needs to realize that if he want the audience to take his acting seriously after several flops, he should try to do something different
      And no, despite him being a scene stealer in Moana, he's not the main character at all 🤷

    During the lockdown, I was messaging Mark Kerr and we were trying to nail down a time for him to be a guest on my podcast. I told him I had already interviewed Frank Shamrock, another one of my all-time favourite fighters, and that it would be ah honour for me to interview him too. At the time, he was really struggling with neurological issues caused by all the damage he incurred from MMA fighting. He couldn't work and was totally reliant on donations from fans. Things did not look good at all. A few months later, I found out the The Rock has bought the rights to make a movie about Mark's life. I am delighted this is actually happening and hope that Mark Kerr earns a ton of money from this. Anyone who has ever had any dealings with him will tell you that Mark Kerr is a really nice guy and I couldn't be happier for him!

MMA, or more accurately my instructor, taught me a lot of the discipline I didn't get growing up as well since my pops wasn't around. My instructor wouldn't just teach us to fight, but to be better people. To involve ourselves in the community and raise others up. I'm not as young anymore but I know if I ever take up MMA again there's a fantastic community waiting for me. I can't wait to see this. I trained by way of Royce Gracie, Pat Hardy, and Mike Tinajero. Amazing men. Plus Royce was the first UFC champion. Back when there were no weight classes, gloves, and it was almost vale tudo style. There are so many amazing stories to be told about those fighters at those times. but it is nice to see the Rock tries his best to capture the feeling of those times. the way he stands in the ring at 0.21 seconds completely brought me back that magical time. people who never been part of that time, will never understand how truly special Pride was. ask anyone who was there that time and they will tell you it was the greatest time in MMA and kickboxing ( K-1 ) ever. just pure magic.

    Impressed at how The Rock got pretty close at resembling Mark Kerr. Kerr was Jacked in his Prime.

  • @SkyTurnsPurplePhotography

    Cool fact, Kerr, Coleman, Severn, and other wrestlers would train here in Arizona at GCU together; they called themselves Team Phoenix. Even one of the OG UFC commentators, Jeff Blatnik, would roll sometimes.
    Ryan Bader, the ASU alum and actual fighter in the film who is his corner guy, is also local here in AZ.
    Arizona also produced Don Frye in that era.
    ASU has produced a number of top-tier UFC fighters.
    Mark Kerr used to live in Scottsdale. Nice guy. His girl was a dime. He drove an Acura NSX after he got a few paydays. Even when he struggled after coming off the roids, he was always the nicest guy. He was never a dick to anyone. Anyone who knew him back then will tell you the same thing: he was a polite, friendly guy.

      I agree with all of this. HBO did an amazing job on that film. Super humble guy. He wrestled in my hometown during high school. All the old coaches remember him and have great things to say. I think the downfall of his career was his addiction to pain meds. Taking those before his fights then watching him hit a wall and not being able to move was chilling. Fun fact about Mark - he beat Randy Couture is the NCAA finals and he also had a great rivalry with Kurt Angle while competing for the World team spot. In 96, Kurt went onto winning Olympic gold with a broken neck. Kurt says there were times in his life where he never thought he would beat Kerr.
