Colin O'Briant yes but the thing about this "dragon" is that it fits the description of blue ben. chances are blue ben was actually that dinosaur, and its very likely that all the stories of dragons and such were dinosaurs or dinosaur-like animals, afterall they share very similar descriptions (a giant carnivorous lizard thing which lives in a cave or somewhere)
It's more like finding the remains of one mutant dinosaur egg with a fetus that might have had fire breathing abilities, except it wasn't strong enough to break out of the egg and died.

I don't think so. Remember, had the PS1 not come out, the Saturn wouldn't have been rushed to market. Thus it would've had an easier architecture to develop for. George, you are truly the only person in the world who would make a video like this and not have it be "I had this privilege bestowed upon me and it was awesome" but rather analyse the whole meaning of the thing and recognise the fact that you've actually experienced what the story behind it represents.
About the 'not being able to compete with the sega CD and so on' thing remember that in keeping with the snes in general, extra performance would have been in hardware inside the cartridge, NOT inside the unit itself. And cartridges are replaceable. You can actually see a progression of articles and documents from about 1993 to 1995 about the snes CD, which mention various hardware configurations, and these ALL also say that extra processors and memory and such would be in a cartridge, so that it could be upgraded without having to replace the expensive CD drive itself. Unsurprisingly the content of the cartridge included with a relatively early prototype is unimpressive. Both because it seems to be one of the earliest models, and because it stands to reason you try and get the basics working before you try and get additional upgraded hardware. Some of the more advanced revisions of the system included: SuperFX 2 chip as standard equipment... And the most recent document/plans known of. (around 1995) which are quite specific. - so specific in fact that there were probably working prototypes of this configuration too. The cartridge contains a HANDS cd controller chip with 4 mebagabits of RAM (512 kilobytes). This chip is a 65816 variant that handles communications between the snes hardware, the cd drive, and the included expansion processor. It further contains a chip to handle streaming CD audio. (snes cartridge and expansion slots have analog audio inputs that bypasses all of the audio chips and feeds directly into the final amplifier stage) The cartridge also has a 32 bit NEC v810 processor. (nintendo eventually used these in the virtual boy, which lends weight to this being real), along with another dedicated 8 megabits of RAM (1 megabyte). like the SA-1 there would be dedicated hardware to convert from packed pixel bitmap to the snes planar graphics formats. This processor would run at roughly 21 mhz. Needless to say this specification outdoes the sega CD, and pushes into 32x kind of performance levels. And while we don't have conclusive proof this ever existed, this IS a specification given to several gaming magazines, AND an information document for snes game developers describing what the snes CD would be. And that does suggest it would likely have been made if the CD unit had not been cancelled. Sure we don't have a prototype proving it, but remember until recently the 'playstation' was also nothing more than a rumour. So don't feel like the poor specifications of this prototype would have been representative of actual hardware if the drive DID exist. And even if it was, remember Nintendo's planning here in putting such expansion hardware in a replaceable, upgradable cartridge, rather than the CD unit itself. If it HAD existed, don't doubt that it would have had upgraded specs sooner or later.
It's a historical artifact, it's value is not in it's practical utility. A suit of armor or an ancient statue also have little utility in a practical sense. It was very common on the internet for people to say "Did you know that the Atari ET landfill never happened and is just an internet rumor?", so people had to go and get physical proof.

There both awesome guys, I could talk to Terry for hours. he and I got a into a converstation about the history of the Pittsburgh area that lasted for around 40 minutes.
_I HAVE RETURNED_ It's basically a SNES with a decent sized cache and save ram mounted in a cartridge. No boost to processing like the SEGA CD or the PC CD but it'd be dead simple to work with if you know how to make a SNES game. There's also full 2x CD playback but I'm not sure if you could mix CD audio with the usual sound chip. So yeah, if someone gets their hands on the prototype (or decaps everything and sends the data to the bsnes guy) we could see a Nintendo Playstation game in our lifetimes!
To my knowledge, Nintendo PlayStation CD homebrew was already done, two games, by the time Ben Heck started trying to repair the system, pending test on real hardware, working in NOCASH emulator. Software-relevant hardware knowledge was gained from the disassembly of the software on the boot ROM of the prototype and documented by NOCASH. The boot ROM was dumped and distributed by an anonymous source. Chances are, Redbook CD audio (and SONY XA ADPCM) and SNES APU sound simultaneous operation is possible. I believe this because on teardown, I have recognized a hardware design trait that connected the clocks of soundchip and optical disk drive, something that was also done e.g. in Dreamcast (and probably in some other systems, but Dreamcast hardware is the one i'm intimately enough familiar with) specifically in order to make hardware based simultaneous audio playback possible. Otherwise, if it wasn't implemented in hardware, you could still do software tricks, like either sacrificing two channels or the echo unit.
Watch episodes #246-247 and 265 of the show. There is a homebrew and it's called "Super Boss Gaiden". You can download it for free on your computer and play it. "Game On"
That's really interesting, about the companies suddenly coming up and giving offers... We've experienced that in a different case, we own a farm and it used to have a lot of cows but is now converted into pure living space. But my parents were thinking about getting a little pot-bellied pig and had contacted a few places where you could get them. It wasn't even finalized yet but we got calls from a couple of shows... I don't remember the names because this was like 15 years ago. But they were shows about "Unusual pets" and they wanted us to come on with out pig we didn't even have yet... And they were willing to pay like 2000 dollars to get us on. We didn't get the pig and we didn't go on the shows (obviously) but it's still interesting to see how fast that world runs.
You're right about how much videogames have changed in just the last 30 years. That's something I've been thinking about a lot ever since you mentioned it on the TOVG podcast. (Episode #110 I think) I'm glad more of this history is coming out. 1999 to 2007 to 2009 to 2015... Great work on tracking this down, I've never heard of this before!
I like that Terry Diebold guy, he seems down to earth. Great storytelling George! You're one of the only youtubers I've seen that puts this much effort into what you do.
Here I am, watching material about an incredible piece of history and I can't help but be distracted by this wonderful cover of "Miami" in the background :)
George, i love how in most shots of Terry Diebold it scans like they are a shot from CitizenFour. efforts to preserve 'the way things were' are important, and attempts to do just that are worth entry fee alone. thankyou for this, and id like to see more of this type of thing in your oevre and on your channel

Awesome video! It was cool to get to see it, even if only in a video, since I'll probably not be able to make my way to MagFest anytime soon. Thanks for posting this!
I don't see why it would. If they'd follow through, the N64 would probably have had a CD-drive and get all of Sony's first party content. All of the games you loved for the PS1 would've come out for the N64 and looked way better and all PS2 games would've come out on the Gamecube. And Nintendo wouldn't have had to pursue a "blue oceans strategy", thus their consoles would never have been under powered or gimmicky. The main difference would be that Sega would still be making consoles, and making loads of first party games to shift units. In other words, we'd still be seeing new Virtua Fighter, Sega Rally and Project Gotham Racing games coming out. Plus Sega would've released all fourteen Shenmue shapters by now.
Great video. glad the dad and son found it, they seem like good genuine guys. they deserve to tour with it and get all the enjoyment that goes with it. Would be great to see it sometime
Imagine what Nintendo could have looked like today if they followed through and released the SNES CD/Playstation instead of turning Sony into a rival by humiliating them. Ninty might have been the undisputed master of consoles today, instead of the shambling hasbeen pushing feeble tech.
Holammer No the feeble tech was because Iwata became CEO in 2002 and said fuck you to console power. But he's dead now. his last console was the Nintendo Switch
Holammer Get with it.. They ALSO develop software, it doesn't take much looking around to realize graphics push is killing gaming. Devs can barely afford to develop (buggy, laggy, half built) "AAA" titles, which require season passes out the gate. The cost to develop a modern game is getting ridiculous, the looks are getting shiny, and the gameplay is swirling down the damn toilet.
Why all the misguided contempt for Nintendo? The Switch is probably the most excited I've gotten for a Nintendo console in years, and I'm just now discovering how much I missed out on the GC through Wii U. All their first party properties are gold standards for gaming. Their consoles are underpowered, but at least the Wii and Switch are innovative. Instead of pushing out graphically pretty but mechanically broken games, they take the time to make sure every major title is legendary. The gaming world would be a lot cheaper and more grey without Nintendo.
@@JapanForSale Yeah, Nintendo definitely liven up gaming. On the other hand, I'm glad there are gaming companies other than them. If you look at Nintendo's third-party policy from the NES days, it shows how brutal they were (and in a sense, had to be to avoid another market crash); it's doubtful that they would have ever moved away from this policy had so many classics not changed gaming on other systems (Doom, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, FF7 etc.). I don't think gaming would be as cinematic or treated as seriously by the general public, for example, so a person like Hideo Kojima could never fulfil their vision in a gaming landscape where Nintendo became the monopoly holder in AAA gaming.
Hostius: Nintendo arguably was the grandpapi that gave us those legendary titles you mentioned, such as MGS, FF7-9, etc. I could not imagine what my developmental gaming stage would be like without those. I will always be thankful for that.
I don't quite get why I'm crying but I can tell you it's for sure related to the fact that no other medium has such a passion around it and that is fucking beautiful that sparkle are you seeing peoples eyes that vision and excitement the bond that you create with the people who share your passion is something magical
I'd disagree. The thing is that since the PS1 launched, it's been in vogue to mock any and all mistakes Nintendo make, while Sony and Microsoft get away with pretty much anything.
You could say Sony vs. MS for 3 generations is a very good business decision. It's just 2 sides of the same coin, made shinier every couple of years. In terms of return on investment, that's a steal. But Nintendo has had something new to offer every new generation in that same time span. They stayed relevant by staying above the fray. It must take some incredibly good decisions to stay alive and thrive for this long by charting completely new territories.
Did Ben ever get that drive working? And to be fair though, most collectors items dont have much of a use. Most of us have something like figurines and whatnot sitting on the shelves, stuff that only collects dust but man do we love it.
I love that the owners of this thing allowed the gaming community to look at what's inside it. Game preservation is a big deal to a lot of people, and if they'd sold it to a collector, most likely no one would ever know exactly what it was. Thank you so much.
He did, but there really wasn't much to say. As George himself puts it, it's functionally a Super Famicom with no region locking and an unused CD drive. They were even using standard SFC controllers to play it. Can't really say much about playing the system, given that the story surrounding it is far more interesting/important.
I love the Nintendo Playstation story. Because in perspective, it's probably one of the most important moments in the history of videogames. And the fact that this story has ended up like this, with the console ending up on the hands of this two guys who didn't even know what it was at first, and don't really care much about it, just makes it more perfect in a way.

Mega64 "dramatization"
Just when I though this channel couldn't get any better
You're right about how much videogames have changed in just the last 30 years. That's something I've been thinking about a lot ever since you mentioned it on the TOVG podcast. (Episode #110 I think) I'm glad more of this history is coming out. 1999 to 2007 to 2009 to 2015... Great work on tracking this down, I've never heard of this before!
The "Nintendo Play Station"
Wow … thinking of what could have happened … it really is something else.
John Doe そう名を!
勇者王!
ガオガイガー!
I like that Terry Diebold guy, he seems down to earth.
Great storytelling George! You're one of the only youtubers I've seen that puts this much effort into what you do.
They should bring it on Antique Roadshow.
Good video, I started with the Ben Heck videos and eventually made it here. I'm glad that Ben got his hands on it and shared so much about it.
Well that's not a video title you see every day.
Thank you for that footage of Stunt Race FX. I played that game as a kid but couldn't remember the title and have been trying to look it up for years.
Well, it's official. George knows where the last Polybius cab is.
All your videos are great, but this sort of investigative style is what attracted me to the channel in the first place.
love it!
Why do these retrospectives never mention Sony's time as a third party publisher known as Sony Imagesoft
This video was awesome, you can feel George flexing his journalistic muscles here and it's great.
You sure live the life George.
I'd love to have a recreated version of it, there's just something so... special about how it looks.
Ah this was foreshadowed in the Weebcast! I've been looking forward to this.
I appreciate your use of Kutaragi's Way in this video.
"Playing the Nintendo Playstation Prototype" was there footage of it running ? did they ever get the 1 cd that came with it working ?
Congratulations on your engagement George I'm so proud of you :D!!!
No way...legendary.
Here I am, watching material about an incredible piece of history and I can't help but be distracted by this wonderful cover of "Miami" in the background :)
It definitely belongs in a museum
George, i love how in most shots of Terry Diebold it scans like they are a shot from CitizenFour.
efforts to preserve 'the way things were' are important, and attempts to do just that are worth entry fee alone.
thankyou for this, and id like to see more of this type of thing in your oevre and on your channel
I know george isn't a big fan of it but I always like it when he shows his face in his videos. if i'm really lacking in george facetimes though I can just look at my feet
Awesome video! It was cool to get to see it, even if only in a video, since I'll probably not be able to make my way to MagFest anytime soon. Thanks for posting this!
George a Mega64 fan confirmed?
Stocks are up
I'm happy to have shown you our reverence lol. Glad you had a great time Super Bunnyhop! thanks for the credit at the end
My favorite console is the PS2, and my favorite games are Zelda and Pokemon, my entire life would be different if this came trough
Really interesting piece. Another reason why your channel and intelligent gaming videos at large, endure. Nice one, mate.
Terry Diebold looks like J.K. Simmons with hair.
so is he rushin or draggin?
"I don't know how bad 2017 is going to be"
2020-2021: hold my beer
I have a Polybius cabinet in my dad's attic
That is so interesting about the offers. Excellent work my friend.
Wow, that thing must be worth at least 200 bucks
Luckee Strikee I'll give you $25 for it 😏
and $0.75 for any other games you can find, it's one heck of a deal 😮
I don't have it, but I have some ps2 games if you want
You can add a couple of zeros to that, I think.
edit: They got offered $200.000 for it once ruclips.net/video/aRail-6p--U/видео.html
@TheNicerDicer Turn on your sarcasm detector
my god that sound of the original PlayStation boot up gives me goose bumps of nostalgia!
George Weidman - #1 games journalist in the game.
I felt like a goddess when I got to mess around with the Nintendo Playstation back at AVGC. The father that owns it, Terry is a cool dude.
Would still rather buy this than a Switch.
.
Great video. glad the dad and son found it, they seem like good genuine guys. they deserve to tour with it and get all the enjoyment that goes with it. Would be great to see it sometime
Anyone know who the famous director might be?
petrallen maybe Christopher Nolan?
Got the impression this happened in Hong Kong, so John Woo, perhaps?
This is so dope, Dude. Never stop
If i were him i'd purpose a trade between the Play Station and 1 million copies of Battletoads to Pawn Stars
I think this was legit the most interesting video George has made in a long time (not to discredit past vids of course, love u george)
What? No views? Let's fix that.
"Pawn Stars kept buggin' me for a while. I pretty much told 'em to f**k off."
Classic.
The dad sounds like John Goodman.
Wow, I never knew about this collab about Nintendo and Sony. Very interesting.
I don't quite get why I'm crying but I can tell you it's for sure related to the fact that no other medium has such a passion around it and that is fucking beautiful
that sparkle are you seeing peoples eyes that vision and excitement the bond that you create with the people who share your passion is something magical
Nintendo has never stopped making horrible business decisions.
Once again, a great, never done before report. Great job George.
I love you
I love the music featured in this video; very ambient :)
If I was in a room with the Holy Grail, I'd be reverent too, George.
Did Ben ever get that drive working?
And to be fair though, most collectors items dont have much of a use. Most of us have something like figurines and whatnot sitting on the shelves, stuff that only collects dust but man do we love it.
OH MY GOD GEORGE YOU CAN'T JUST MENTION 2017 STOP SHOVING YOUR POLITICS DOWN MY THROAT DOWNVOTED UNSUBSCRIBED DISLIKED BURNED MY COMPUTER!
They also showed up at Sac Gamers Expo and people were playing Street Fighter 2 on it. I had the chance to record a close up on the console
Love what was said about the pawn stars
JamesCo elsPardon fuck them. They'd be like I know a guy and I can offer u $100 cause it doesn't work
Very well done. Really enjoyed the way you put that together. I'll def be checking out your channel in the future.
It's almost like culture is more interesting than capitalism, lol.
No idea this existed! Thanks, George. Good video as ever.
WE WANT TRUMP
WE WANT TRUMP
WHOOOOOOOOO
Such a lust for Trump!
that's the longest sentence a Trump supporter can construct
+Prof. Luigi Exactly what I was thinking. YOU PLAYED ME LIKE A FIDDLE!
I'm sorry but I've been a long follower of your comment but your blatant politicization of your comment is going too far. Unsubscribed.
SuperRipperhugme Wat.
I love that the owners of this thing allowed the gaming community to look at what's inside it. Game preservation is a big deal to a lot of people, and if they'd sold it to a collector, most likely no one would ever know exactly what it was. Thank you so much.
Would be nice if you actually played the console instead of talking about it for 16 minutes...
it's literally just a super famicom game dood
look up snes gameplay
The console is literally a Super Famicon with a CD drive that doesnt work.
Or maybe it does, we don't know of any CD games the thing could run.
