I’m glad it was helpful for you! I can see why people would like it just for the Christmas vibes, but I couldn’t get past the lack of any sort of historical truth 🫣😂
hahaha I buddy read Mr Dickens and His Carol last winter and it was a huge disappointment to me as well - but my buddy loved it. I think I was a little more generous and gave it 2.5 on Storygraph. I just finished A Christmas Carol also and really am amazed at how much delight it brings me right from the moment I open the cover. I'm really thankful Martin Chuzzlewit wasn't doing well and this was what resulted from need.
One of my friends from book club highly recommended this after she read it last Christmas, so I’ve been holding on to it all year. She’s not subscribed to me, so she won’t have to hear me rant 😂 I’m glad I’m not alone. A Christmas Carol was such a delight. I can’t wait to talk to my class about it!
The best movie of A Christmas Carol is the old black and white where Alistair Simms is playing Ebineezar. (sp?) If you haven't seen this one it's a must.
Mr Dickens and his carol reminds me of a book I read recently, The Man Who Invented Christmas. This one also talks about why he wrote it and some of his background, and there are parts about what happened to the tale through the years, and touching on some of the films that tell the story of Scrooge. I loved this book. I haven't read Mr Dickens and his Carol, so I can't really compare them to each other, except for what you've said about it. But based on your review, I'm glad I read mine. There was a movie with the same name...7 or 8 years ago but the movie got horrible reviews.
I’ve heard of the movie, but I didn’t realize it was a book also! It sounds like it might have some more historical validity than Mr Dickens and His Carol.
When I read A Christmas Carol a few years ago, I was constantly seeing scenes from A Muppet Christmas Carol or an older cartoon called The Stingiest Man in Town in my head (not every scene, but most scenes were word perfect in one or the other), so I consider those the most loyal adaptations 😆 I'd considered trying Mr. Dickens and His Carol, but I think I'll pass now. Thanks for the heads up!
Oh goodness … I must’ve forgotten to update on that! I did finish it, but shortly after the intro portion of this video, so I must’ve blanked on it when I did my mid-week update. I enjoyed it, but didn’t love it. It had some funny moments and some sweet moments.
This is why i generally don't like retellings/reimaginings or similarly types of books like that one you didn't like..... there's one about Jane Austen (or One of the Bronte's?) That Anne read. Yeah, I'm not wasting my time on people's wrong opinions and wrong takes.😂
I've just finished one about Jane Austen time travelling into the modern day, it worked quite well when all you got was glimpses of a woman who might be Jane Austen but once she's established I kept thinking - she wouldn't have said that. Why would she be using Postit notes on the fridge to tell her what it is. She's time travelled, she hasn't got dementia! Irksome is the word I'd use.
Yup, totally valid. If it had been a similar storyline that WASN’T an actual person who told it to Dickens, that would’ve worked so much better for me.
I feel like sb else I follow reviewed Dickens and His Christmas Carol the same way! They really didn't like it. Boo, I'm sorry it was a bust. Thanks for warning us off 😅😆
I HATED Mr. Dickens and His Carol.. I felt pretty much all of the things you stated.. I was so annoyed! If we dont know if he had an affair we can't assume that he did and ruin his character as a real person! ughhh!!
I’m glad I’m not alone in my dislike 😂 I didn’t even bring up how creepy he acted towards Eleanor. And none of his actions were even viewed as problematic by his wife afterwards 🤦🏻♀️😂
I purchased a beautiful vintage hardcover edition of A Christmas Carol I am going to read it for the first time this month 🎄🎄🎄can’t wait!
Ahhh, you’re in for such a treat! It’s the perfect holiday read!
I really appreciate your review about Mr Dickens and his Carol. I’ve wondered about that book for a while.

I haven’t seen it! I’ll have to find it somewhere
I think there are some free audio editions of 'A Christmas Carol' I might listen to one of them soon.
It’s the perfect time of year for it!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who enjoyed replayed A Muppet Christmas Carol in their head while reading 😂 I haven’t seen the other one you mentioned!
@beautifulminutiae It's an older one and not very popular, so I'm not too surprised.
Did I miss the wrap up of Cranford or were you not done on that?

@clarepotter7584 that sounds so bizarre!
Do you put your cookies in the freezer? I make cookies and my family eats them all and I can't give any out 😂
Yes, I put them in the freezer! Haha it sounds like your cookies are being enjoyed either way!
Yikes thank you from saving me from ever reading that book!
You’re welcome 😜 I can see why people who know nothing about Dickens or just want the vibes would enjoy it, but it really bothered me!
@@beautifulminutiae It would bother me too! I don't mind a little creative license for a plot line, but not to change the author's personality for it.
I feel like sb else I follow reviewed Dickens and His Christmas Carol the same way! They really didn't like it. Boo, I'm sorry it was a bust. Thanks for warning us off 😅😆
It’s good to know I’m not alone in my dislike, especially considering it came highly recommended from someone in my book club 😂
