Rubber sure is tough on rough surfaces but they're weak when it comes to impact. Ding it good from long range on a double rimmed ring or half court shot and you'll find lumps or egged shaped ball soon enough. If you're going to try a half court shot do it on a cheap Kmart ball or make sure your ball is a reputable composite but even then you're asking for it on a double rimmed or solid steel ring.
