A *major* difference between these two bikes is *ease of maintenance* , as exemplified by valve clearance adjustment - shims for the Thruxton, screw-n-jamnut for the Conti.
There are bike owners who get great satisfaction from modding their bikes, but don't want to risk screwing up a big investment. The Royal Enfield 650s are perfect for that segment, especially if they are going for the "look" of a café racer and not necessarily the performance of an expensive bike.
Lets be honest, if Thruxton is half the current price i will get one. RE is a cafe racer for middle class guy here in India....If the price is the same all RE fan Boys here will get the Thruxton lol. But RE is so cheap that all the Thruxton plus points will be disregarded for the price point alone. Lets put it this way ..Supermodel vs hottest chick in your block and you are just a regular guy
That's actually a very accurate way to look at it haha...yeah if the Thruxton wasn't so expensive then it wouldn't be fair at all, Thruxton would win...but at the price difference...hahaha
Alex, here is a tougher request: Compare and contrast the Triumph Thruxton 900 with the Continental GT. Currently you can buy lightly used 900s for around the same or slightly less than a new Cont. GT. Thus, is a realistic consideration for someone looking for a RETRO cafe racer (at least in the US as other markets may have different values for these bikes). Whereas, the Thruxton 1200 and the Kawi Z900 RS Cafe are modern bikes in retro guise.
Absolutely an important comparison to do, and I will do it soon! It's a much closer match! Also have a W800 cafe vs Conti GT comparison coming out next couple days since that is also a more fair matchup.

I already have the S&S Cam installed with other goodies, just waiting to decide if I go with a750 Big Bore kit or the 865 kit. In India, we get 5 Contis for one Thruxton RS ! Anyway, does “Cafe Racing” ( racing from one Cafe to another ) exist anywhere in the world today ? If not, what’s the practical use of such a Cafe Racer with 100+ HP since it can’t be used for touring and on tracks ? Heard that sales RE’s Twins are more than sales of “ALL” Triumphs in the last 3 months ! Are overpriced Triumphs getting their fair share of ‘punishment’ ?
The actual old "cafe racing" from cafe to cafe doesn't really exist anymore (I'm sure they still do it somewhere haha), but here in the U.S. there are whole race clubs and organizations for "cafe" class races on tracks, so it is popular here to race retro motorcycles on tracks. The Thruxton cup series is a good exanple.
Yes it does. The Ace Cafe is here in Orlando, FL and guys and gals race to and from all of the bars and coffee shops around downtown Orlando. This is no where near the part of town where that mouse lives.
Sadly the speed restrictions and traffic on the North circular put an end to that , the true and original home of cafe racing by the ton up teds of the 50`s/60`s from the Ace cafe London , once a place of Goldies , TR650`s , speed twins and all the other Brit Iron you care to think of
You need to have a passion to ride a retro bike. Cafe racing is an embodiment of old school motorcycling and not all about just racing from a cafe to another one. And yeah every bike is designed to fulfil maybe not your kind of ride but others will look for it. And that's obvious.

The royal enfield is a very pretty looking bike, but I have a hard time justifying those performance numbers. In the states at least, they don’t compare well to much of anything on the road in that department. You can buy a used triumph in great condition for even cheaper with more performance and arguably a better fit and finish. I bought a 2014 bonneville t100 with 7,000 miles for just $5,000 last autumn and I’m glad I did. Even if you’re all about the cafe racer look you can get a thruxton 900 in a similar price range. Hey Aman!
