I have destroyed many cymbidiums before due to incorrect watering patterns and wrong potting media. Please note that this type of cymbidium has a lot of roots growing around the pot; therefore, the media within the pot must provide a quick drain of water to avoid rotten roots after watering. Also, depending on the depth of the pot, 2/3 of the pot may be still wet inside and you think that it needs watering again. If you plant your cymbidium in a regular potting soil only, you are asking for many problems of overwatering, plant diseases, and insects later. The best way is to use a quality bark type mixed with perlite and some small size lava rocks. The cheap barks will break down quickly within a few months and they retain water too long inside the pot in the lower half of the pot and around the roots. This eventually causes the plant to die. Steve gave very informative instructions. I would replay and listen to his instructions over and over again to remember his keywords. Thank you Roger Gardens and Steve Hampson.
Thanks for your great presentation. I got a Cymbidium and it has rotten back bulbs. I couldn't figure out why it appeared to have scale or mealy bugs. Gave it some imidacloprid and now the rotten bulbs, so all your info is really helpful. Home Depot has cement mixing boxes small and large. The small one seems like it would be perfect for the repotting. 28" x 20" x 6"
Hi Steve, I'm really enjoying your video, although some root close-ups would be helpful too. Just got a new and young cymbidium for growing indoors in the PNW here in Puyallup WA. Had a beautiful one down there that grew outside on my patio table in Costa Mesa. I miss Rogers Gardens and the great weather. Thanks for your helpful potting and growing tips.
Your Cymbidium is not as root bound. Often times, when I repot my Cymbidium, they are super root bound. I normally ended up chopping half of the roots out. Very informative video.
With the out door and in door orchid, is this ok to have a same mix? Like.. .. Medium orchid bark and perlite? You also mentioned on the video, give the orchid a soak. How often you give them a soak and what do you put in the water and for how long soak for? Thank you
Hi Steve, I got the pot of cymbidium with flowers blooming from a friend however a week later the flowers began to faded away. Some other bulbs are showing some brown dots like burning. I had only water it once during the past week. The pot is quite small and bulbs are very crowded. Wondering if you could advise whether I should take it out and re-pot it to a bigger pot? Thank you.
I've got some very successful cymbidiums growing in a sheltered partly sunny spot. I make sure they don't get too dry and that is all. After 5 years they're still flowering every year.
Thanks for telling us that the dead pseudo bulbs may start having new growth if you separate them and repot them. I will try that! I've always cut them out and thrown them away. Can you separate it and then plant it in the new, bigger pot with the same orchid it came off of?
