    Ran Gauley when I was 14 back in 1994 but my dad was an instructor so kayaking in my perception pirouette was an experience. I caught the eddy behind pillow and ate lunch watching the rafters. Watching tourist float after they smacked pillow 😂🤣

      Listen to my dude Curtis May - he's a smart guy. Doesn't do anyone any good to lie about whitewater classes. Rafting companies love to lie to make things seems harder than they are. Real deal class V is no place for the average commercial rafting customer. The Gualey is fun - that's all that matters.

    • @broderickmcdonald4416
      @broderickmcdonald4416 3 года назад

      @@marketing-ps4yl I understand where you’re coming from about raft companies, new river for example. Neither the keeneys or double z are class V rapids but are generally advertised as such. But the upper Gauley is entirely different those class V rapids should be treated as class V. Maybe if you’ve only seen them at fall flow you could have this misconception.

      I've been kayaking and guiding on the gauley for nearly a decade. I've run the UG from 500cfs up to 3500cfs and all levels in between. I know there are undercuts. That doesn't make them class V rapids.

    Yeah this isn’t class 5 water at this level. Meets none of the stipulations. Also, most of these people can hardly paddle.

      While I admit I am not an avid white water rapid adventurer it was pretty intense at times especially with an inexperienced crew in the boat. But I have to ask you why you say there are no class V rapids on the upper / lower Gauley which is what we did. Where is this information from you speak of? If you look at Upper Gauley Rapids they show www.gauleyriverrapids.com/upper-gauley-rapids/ --- Pillow Rock V, Second Drop off of Lost Paddle V, Fourth Drop of (TumbleHome) V, IRON Ring V /// Lower Koontz Flame, Lower Mash V, Heaven Help you V, Pure Screaming Hell V.... maybe in your book the entire route must be a V I have no idea. NOR do I know how they rate these. They had just opened the dam as well so there was an extra amount of water and we were told it was a Class V rapids. ---
      They could have called it a Class I or X, I would not have had a frame of reference (my first time) other than what they told us and on the website. In all cases it was fun crazy we dumped our boat and 3 dudes were so freaked about it decided after the manager drove out to see us (as we were pulled up on the shore trying to collect ourselves) to drive out with him, I have to admit during this time in the water I wondered if I was going to get out of this myself.

      @@MrJmillerG www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/state-summary/state/WV/. The water was lower at those flows. If the water was pushier, it is absolutely class 5 water, but if you watch the rafts, they were missing must make moves, and were still being flushed out. If you want to compare it to class 5 water, check out the Grand Canyon of the stikine in Canada, the green narrows, the cherry in California, or gore canyon in Colorado. It will really give you a sense of how much more serious the water is.

    • @laurimo7105

      @@shappooppi the gauley is still very very serious with undercuts and sieves even if you don’t think of it as traditional class 5. There are must make moves and places you don’t want to be. It’s big pushy water. Thrilling enough for most and the biggest whitewater most people will ever see.

      It's always a challenge to find the right soundtrack! I respect the selection as your personal signature, and that's really what it's all about - for myself, the growly Metal is a bit too much, and limits the demographic - Maybe something like System of a Down, or Tool wouldn't be as polarizing, but that's just my opinion! I still think the video is fantastic, and I appreciate you uploading it!!
