  • Hey, there friends. I thought I would do something different this time, and show appreciation to a continent dear to my heart, and a project which has allowed me to live the way I do. In this video, I explain what Europe Day is, why it’s worth remembering and celebrating, and what it took to get where we are today - how Europe went from being a continent of war to one of peace. Awesome to hear from Austria! Norway owes much to the EU, I wish we were as much a part of it as you are (and in many ways we are, but we can’t vote and take part in the institutions). Hopefully we can learn to look past own borders in the future!

    A brave initiative, Andy. I like the overall message this brings, but perhaps look a bit closer into all headlines for European situations when making modern claims. Europe is organised well, but it's got as well disunity brewing from within, not only from incidents with nations outside it. Everywhere has conflicts really, but most seem to be placed under quiet wraps rather than escallate.

    • @AndysTake
      @AndysTake  3 года назад +5

      Thank you so much! That's correct of course, there's disunity all over the EU. But that does not mean Europe has ever been more unified. We hear the negative stories every day, but rarely the positive, so my idea was to shed some light on what I believe the EU and the Europeans fighting for it have managed to establish since 1950. I wrote a master's thesis on this actually, and despite what you might think, the European Union has never had a higher approval rating than these days, so that should say something, right?

    That was a good video, thank you for taking the time to make it. I must say, though, that I would not consider the enduring peace we have in Europe nowadays an achievement of the European Union, as democratic states do not go to war with each other anyway. As you said in your video, it was the ambition of individual rulers that caused most of the wars prior to the 20th century. Therefore, I'd argue that it was the spread of democracy and not the European Union that turned Europe into a peaceful place.

    • @AndysTake
      @AndysTake  3 года назад +3

      Thank you, friend, great to hear you enjoyed it. And you are of course right, democracy is the key factor. But I believe the EU was born from that desire to maintain democracy and peace, and that the Europeans who fought for this, the idea that democracy would rule in Europe forever more, has strengthened the peace which was so young back in 1950. Either way, they are clearly linked is all I'm saying :)

      Thank you so much, Happy! Lovely words to hear. As for the maps.. @@AndysTake Very clever indeed! Yeah, overlaying the filled map is how I would've done it, however, the transitions from blank to filled looked very professional (Kings & Generals esque!) so I knew there had to be something going on that I couldn't do myself! The accomplishments of the EU are usually so incredibly undercommunicated, so you really hit the nail on the head here! It's really historically unprecedented what it's done for peace. The union really is one of the most worthy winner of the Nobel's peace prize of all time. The EU gets a lot of (deserved) flak for how they handled the 2008 financial crisis and the mass-vaccinations this year, but it's worth not forgetting how much the union has done for the continent.

    I studied International Relations and Politics so I'll give this in a way that fits the theme: The European Union is a perfect example of what the world could look like in the future, both for pros and cons. It has many advantages, many benefits, and it simplifies a lot. However, the current crop of politicians and its class is a far cry from the great leaders of European history. Had you told Gustavus Adolphus or Napoleon Bonaparte about the system of the EU - they would have revolutionized it. I studied the EU in my college for 2 years, and the thing about the EU is that's its ton of paperwork buried beneath, which makes it difficult/not so difficult for ordinary EU citizens to use with. But, I could be wrong in that regard.
    The EU however, is far far far better than what was happening two centuries ago when we had ww1/ww2.

    • @AndysTake
      @AndysTake  3 года назад +1

      Haha, well, you are probably right, but that doesn't mean the system is wrong. What would it even mean that Napoleon would have revolutionized it? As much as I admire certain things he did, Napoleon's legacy is one of war and death and dictatorship, despite many of his educational and legal advances. The EU is a bureacracy, but in my mind, that is a positive, as long as we can supplement it with as much democracy as possible, and if the EU has shown one thing, it's that it's continuously moved in the direction of more democracy.

    • @MedjayofFaiyum
      @MedjayofFaiyum 3 года назад +1

      @@AndysTake Compared to the other democracies of the world, the EU def has a better advantage for certain. That there is no doubt about. True, Napoleon became fascinated with war too often, declaring war when he REALLY didn't need to. I think the EU could be better improved however, a more powerful centralisation of power. Because it has the foundations for it, but needless bureaucracy is stifling it, like all institutions of power, it does need reform for that matter. The EU's moves on freedom of movement is perhaps the best thing for humanity. I do hope we live in a world one day where you can have freedom of movement and not have to worry about moving from here to there.

    • @MedjayofFaiyum
      @MedjayofFaiyum 3 года назад

      Though right now, I think there is a disconnect between the EU and the common people. Because right-wing parties can go and say: Hey look at these rich fat cats dining on your taxes this is why we should exit (and I did read of EU politicians eating lavish dinners, but what about David Cameron when he visited Europe for his deal the man was dining on croissants and lobsters! Talk about the weight he gained, so it goes both ways) then you have the left-wing parties going: Elect us we'll become part of the EU and we'll reform and then they tend to become part of the establishment. There's a lot of good work the EU does - but that RARELY gets reported and for all the money the EU does and has, it doesn't even spend a fraction of it on media and PR for that matter. The EU needs a solidified political structure based on historical European democracies that have managed to do well in the past. Otherwise right now what we have is the EU is Austria Hungarian Empire housing many nationalities and it can implode or vice versa. However, living in the UK most of the time you tend to read anti-EU articles and not enough pro-EU articles.
      The EU needs to connect with common people. The minute it does that the backlash is: Wahh socialism.
      The minute it doesn't interact with common people: wahh rich fat cats.
      I can def understand the attitude of a civil servant or someone working in the EU when they see this.
      Either way, there needs to be some serious change with the politicians, not the hard-working civil servants of the EU and many Govts. It all depends on whether France or Germany is running it - tbh, maybe some other European countries could take up the call. Bring order where there is chaos....

    All the things all disagree:
    0:25: History says otherwise, to many in the Roman Empire, war is a great way to citizenship, glory and wealth, its celebrated by those we experienced war to fight in another one for many has seen it as there home, where 7 of their comrades drink and fight, work and sleep together and the benefits of retirement makes veterans encourage their youth to join the army. The same could be said for medieval times.
    1:15: well, not where I live. When mentioned Europe, ww2 and the Soviet Union is often mentioned first. But its probably a rare exception.
    2:43: War and slave is not the reason of Rome collapse
    +War: war in those time for Rome was a necessity for its survival, from the founding of the republic in which is was almost wipe out if not for a brave sacrifice of its 2 heroes, Rome expansion is needed to ensure its survival both political and economicly. Rome will always face an enemy equal to her, which from the Italian tribes to Carthage and then to the Parthians and the Germans, Rome has to fight to ensure its safe.
    Why in such extent? The mountains of Italia could never support Rome enough, so they conquered Sicily, then Carthage, then, Gaul, then Egypt. All in hopes of supporting the Empire demands. And what else they could do? The economic net netrality of its time were simple, if one is stronger, one is weaker, which is why kings and queens invade and conquer, in this age the only way to grow economicly is though farming, and farms can only be gain though conquering, which is why 1760 should be universally celebrated for making a small amount of infertile land so profitable theres no reapn to conquer more.
    +Slavery: Every nation in the world in other to exist required slaves since there are so much indivituals can produce, and farmers cant grow anything if they have to pay their worker a decent wage, or building ans stuff for that matter. A person in the old age its not as productive thx to lack of technology, which is why low cost labor is needed to grow and expand.

    Also now Europe isn't center of power, that's the reason it can't wage war. It needs unity for Russians and Chinese.
    Also Europe supports wars elsewhere

  • @unserkatzenland8884

    All the things I disagree (2):
    3:28: At the time, it was not consider a "Franco-English" but more of a "French civil war" because two mornarchs at the time were French, they spoke French and all that stuff.
    3:52: I dont think so, the true start of the rivalry was the 30yrs war, as the reason France joined the war was of the fear of the Habsburg expansion rather that religion.
    4:04: the war started not because of the rivalry of the 2 countries, but the geo-political landscape of the time.
    4:45: Youre comparing a war of 2 countries in a time where there are less that 500m people to a continental war where Billions are effected.
