  • Dr. Prabha Atre - Raag Maanj Khamaaj. Jamuna kinaray mora gaon. This song may have roots in folks songs of Madhya Pardesh. Another video on youtube has Pandit Kumar Gandharva's grandson covering it. I would not be surprised if Pandit jee had an influence on the composition. Only this could explain why I could not get it out of my head for past 1 week. Comments are welcome and would love to know if Pandit jee ever covered it himself.

    I am surprised how nobody has commented yet about her getting the second-highest civilian award in India (Padma Vibhushan) last week. A long-due recognition.

      After a certain point in time, the awards become meaningless. Kishori Amonkar, Prabha Atre, Subbulaxmi MS had already become legends way before the awards were conferred on them. The awards earn legitimacy from these iconic artists, not the other way round.

      It simply baffles me.......more amazing, that how people from different cultures relate to music. It shows humans have a common origin, and therefore, atm, universalism should be the new norm. Lets have a borderless human society. Thanks, Ivanka, for sharing your thought.

    My village is on the banks of the Yamuna
    Come there, O dark-skinned!
    My high mansion is on the banks of the Yamuna,
    I’m a new gopika from Brij
    Radha Rangali is my name, play your flute in my name
    Come there, O dark-skinned!
    My village is on the banks of the Yamuna
    I’ll thoroughly bathe you
    And will apply sandalwood tilak on your forehead
    I’ll worship you in the morning and in the evening
    Come there, O dark-skinned!
    My village is on the banks of the Yamuna
    I’ll order for a swing made of flowers
    I’ll decorate the bed with the choicest of flowers
    And will gently massage your feet
    Come there, O dark-skinned!
    My village is on the banks of the Yamuna

    I’ll prepare a dish of butter and sweetmeats
    And will feed you with my own hand
    I’ll take care of you in the morning and in the evening
    Come there, O dark-skinned!
    My village is on the banks of the Yamuna

    The words, their religious/bhakti content, their cultural ethos and the emotive reaction they evoke are very much a part of any musical or for that any artistic expression and its reception. Therefore, no matter how much a non-native may enjoy the universal in any artistic expression will never be able to spontaneously reach the core of what is being performed as a native would. The longing of a village bound Indian girl cannot be expressed or felt anywhere else. It is not a single person pining for her lover but the whole situation which evokes a multi-layered response in the native listener.

    • @preethy9225
      @preethy9225 6 лет назад +24

      So eloquently put ! Indeed, a non-native is able to imbibe the resonance of any culture's musical expression (as I do) without being able to reach its core as a native speaker would. But oh it is still spiritually joyous to me ! I am lost in its inexplicable ecstacy...

    We indian do not enjoy/ appreciate this type of music either. All our music got eclipsed by ' punjabi pop'.

    • @time8745
      @time8745 2 года назад +2

      I mean pop culture is literally popular culture , anything ( songs , films etc ) in those categories is popular because it's enjoyable , easy and generally likable . This music is definitely beautiful but it is not going to be appreciated by the masses unlike punjabi pop etc , it takes patience , time and a certain state of mind to understand or enjoy this category of music . Nothing to be surprised about .

    sangam0009 - you cannot imagine how happy i am right now listening to Pandit Kumar Gandharva's version. All the more happier because you did not provide me with a video link but i noticed that you mention "37 minutes" so i went through some longer youtube uploads and found it. I am so grateful to you because some of the longer videos where he is performing to a live audience is mesmerizing. Thanks once again....Naveed..Karachi, Pakistan

    What a heavenly voice it connects us to the Lord of Lord's...may God bless. Jai Shri Radhe Krishna..

    I dont kkow about others, but I am 27 and having struggle with my inner self. My past, my anger, my ego, my dreams. What I was, what I am, what I will be...but I listened to this for the first time.. and I feel like I was wearing skins, this ego... and I am calling God. I am without skin in front of God. Maa and grandma always immerse themselves in bhakti, I never understood it..but now I am starting to understand.
    This is the music which connects you to God, where you forget everyone, everything..its just your soul and God.

    When one closes their mind, one can see tossing and turning of Yamuna as every swar tosses and turns, as if Yamuna herself is in ecstasy to welcome Krishna. One can see gopika's dancing with ecstatic joy while welcoming Lord Krishna. The 'Gaon' here is a representation of one's own place of warmth and love which we can imagine sitting anywhere accross the globe. The song can elevate anyone! Hats off!!
