Thanks for the video. It reminds me of a package of trimpots that I ordered from Amazon and shipped from China. The assortment consist of 10 values and 10 of each. I needed the 200 ohm and every one measured 9.9 k ohm and many other ones were way off, too.
+Ben Skelton It seems that these vendors are picking up returns and sell offs and selling them on ebay / amazon. The "REI" converter I bought last year for about 30.00 works flawlessly. T thought this was the same, but just under a different brand because it looks identical, but nope as you can see in the video they are completely different.
Mine HDMI 2 av started flickering color out of the box, at some point it got thirdy flawless minutes of movie then went completely black and white no mater what now. If im to open it, its there something i could do to try to make it wirk with color? Im in the middle of basically nowhere and willing to waste it. So its there a trick? Remove a part? Bypass something?... By the way the mode it flawlessly worked 30 minutes was NTSC. My cce however works both modes but it has multiple modes while my main Philips tv has NTSC 4,*/NTSC 3,58 and pal 60 as native. The menu alows for NTSC and pal-m and auto aswell. In auto the image its NTSC but seems to have a dot like ditching pattern... My tv digital converter works flawlessly pal and NTSC however it does black and white on it too if im in pal-bg ir pal-nc. Any tips of what i could theoretically do to it in order to force it to give me that 30 minutes of flawless color? Im sure it was NTSC, even though i was in auto on tv, based on colors i was witnessing at screen. Anything would help.
Have you found any higher quality devices that do the same thing? I need one but I want something I know is going to work and work for a long while. Thanks in advance
The one I showed at the end worked perfect, and has for years. I use it on my security DVR to give me an analog output that feeds into an analog modulator to feed my cameras throughout the house.
I am a bit curious, since I've ordered two of these things, one HDMI>AV and an AV>HDMI. I am planning on putting them on each end of a VHS recorder for some testing of VHS HiFi audio. So I can put HDMI visuals (downconverted to SD quality) onto the tape and view the result on an HDMI monitor. The thing I'm wondering though is that since there's no real interactivity on it other than the PAL/NTSC switch on the HDMI>AV box, what does it default to for image formats? I mean. HDMI is usually fed with 16:9 signals and CVBS aka composite is usually 4:3. In the tests I've managed to find on youtube, the resulting signal seems to be stretched to what would be called anamorphic 16:9 back in the days when everything had to be on a 4:3 signal, even widescreen content. So, how does it react to resolutions? If I feed it a 4:3 resolution over the HDMI, will it add pillarboxes to fill a 16:9 preset and squeeze it to 4:3, or does it always use the full 4:3 image?
I got this off of eBay and I don’t have a problem with it. It connects from HDMI to RCA AV, and it works with both VHS and Betamax VCR’s where it connects with the Amazon FireTV stick, and the PAL and NTSC switch matches perfectly.
I bought one and I get good color video on my lcd t.v. But on my rca crt tv I only get black & white. On my Sanyo flat screen crt I get a rolling b&w image. :( I opened it and the PAL/NTSC switch isn't even attached to the board. The pins go through the holes and that's it. No solder at all! I don't have a soldering gun, is there anything I can do to remedy this? I'm thinking of getting a more expensive brand that cost $32.
@@chochanga this specific unit is actually the one that generated the time display that is on the little monitor over my bench. It's generated on an old BlackBerry playbook which has HDMI out. The HDMI out goes to the converter and then into my distro system as an rf carrier.
I suspect this is the reason why I need to unplug and plugin in the HDMI cable every time to get my Ambilight working. Do you have a brand that has the real chipset in it?
I have one of these MINI converters also and have never been able to get it to work. Not sure I can send it back at this point....I figured I would just take a loss since it was inexpensive. Where did you buy the REI ? I have also seen a Bleiden brand found on Amazon and actually comes as a kit for around $30. Do you know anything about this one? Thanks.
Some times it also depends on how the device detects it. I have an HDMI to Component adapter I use on a HTPC to give me component output. Sometimes when it boots I get no picture, so I plug a VGA monitor into the VGA port, and go into multi monitor setup, and mirror the screen again, and the PC detects and goes to the correct resolution, which needs to be 1280x720 on this specific device. If I plug it unto my phone or tablet, it works properly. Once set on 720 mode it will be fine for several days. Then windows does a security update, and I am facing a black screen until I haul out the old computer monitor again and plug it in so it can detect the monitor. Its a pain in the you know what.
got one of these, but its showing in black and white, cant get it to show in color. hooked it up with my chromecast 2015 edition. what you figure could be the issue? can it be fixed?
12voltvids I did that, when I go to pal, the image starts horizontally skipping. ntsc gives me a stable signal but black and white output, very strange
The REI branded unit has not given me any trouble. Works perfect from my security camera DVR, and is even powered over the HDMI. This one works now that I fixed it on most devices.

Hi, Thank you for sharing! I have one of these converters and for some reason the image is in black and white only, I changed RCA cables and change them for the TV position, and still nothing, any idea? Best Regards.

I had two that looked like this. One hadn’t soldered the usb connector down to but the pins were connected. I had another that looked better quality which was hdmi to scart and didn’t look too bad inside but they all failed after about 2 weeks. Maybe leaving them connected to power caused failure like the old power adapters for electronic games used to do . They don’t give a very good quality picture when they do work but it is watchable.
It is standard definition, so it will take an HD signal from the HDMI input and convert it down to a standard 480i signal for display on a TV. It looks great. I use it to take the output from my security camera DVR and send it to a TV modulator so I can see my cameras on any TV in the house. I have also used it to plug into my bluray player that has Netflix built in, to record copies of Netflix programs onto DVD for my daughter. The DVDs out of the stand alone DVD recorder look great, as good as any other DVD recordings. Some people whine and complain about the quality thinking it is HD, this is not the case, it is standard definition, and it looks great for SD, and it doesn't care about copy protection.
Man when you test it at the beginning, you don't power it up with the USB input, and you only plugged one of the two sound outputs, and you didn't plugged the video output... '-.-
At least there are good video adapters that are cheap, but the horrors! I have a whole dvd recorder made that badly. I need an adapter so this video was quite helpful. Thanks!
Unfortunately these devices are illegal to make in north America. They break the content control of HDMI by providing a non copy protested analog output from an encrypted, even though it is standard definition. So no US company would touch these because they would hith with DMCA violations. That is why these units are always shipped from China. You take your chances. Amazon is pretty good about returning bad ones. I have had a few that are bad, but others that work fine.
Okay thank you so much. I bought 3 one shows the rainbow of colors and I fool with the setup and I get it to work for about 20 minutes or so. Then a big thermometer comes in the center of the screen as if its saying the unit is over heating. I feel the fire stick and it is really hot to the touch so I unplugged it scared of a fire.
This one I fixed now runs 24/7 feeding the HDMI signal from my security DVR to a channel 9 modulator for distribution throughout the house. I have 2 of them here that run full time.
Never tried them with a chromecast as I don't use them, but chromecast dongles get their power from the HDMI device they are plugged into. Same as this device the power port on the HDMI is to power the unit, These devices are not intended to power up other devices, so it is possible that it is heating up because the chromecast is drawing too much power out of the adapter.
I just got a Component video to USB capture box and the only thing that works on it is the composite. The component looks like its trying to dial in a signal but its just garbled.
+Danny Gee Make sure your device that you are trying to capture is set to a resolution your component capture box can support. I have a Hauppague HD-PVR, and it will accept 720P and 1080i only on the component input. If my source device is set to 480i, 480p, or 1080p I get a scrambled screen too. This is likely your problem. Check the settings on the cable, satellite or game you are attempting to capture and set it to the resolution your capture device supports.

+Hypnotosis Gaming More than likely because the xbox 1 is enforcing the HDCP (high definition copy protection) encryption which only certified devices can use.I know at work out media room cable boxes enabled that flag during an update, and we started getting tons of trouble calls from irate customers that had no picture. Roll a truck to their house and find it was their cheap china TV that they had was a non licensed device. Disconnect HDMI and connect component cable and it is fine. They they are all mad saying it used to work, and have to explain that Microsoft pushed a product update that enforces the HDCP protocol on the HDMI connection, and their TV doesn't support it. They have 2 options. Use component cable, or buy a new TV. Try changing the resolution to 720p or 1080i for the input and see if it will work on those settings.
+Hypnotosis Gaming I understand that. Wen HDCP involved the xbox is looking for the licensed chipset in the TV. Since the adapter is using a non certified chipset, it will never pass the integrity check, and thus you get no video.
I bought a similar converter earlier this year, except it converts a PAL signal to NTSC. I use it for a PAL camcorder I bought by mistake at the local thrift store. I was lucky. The converter worked right out of the box (but for HOW LONG?). Your unit was probably made in a warehouse by cheaply paid rural workers. The leaders of China are probably wondering why their economy is down. People are finally not buying their crap.
+Fred Chew From my experience there is good Chinese made stuff, and utter garbage. This unit is from the garbage pile, but they gave me a refund and told me to toss it, so at least it is free garbage that at least works now, even though it needs external power to work properly whereas my other one gets it's power from the device over HDMI.
Got one of these. Mine was somewhat neat looking on the inside, cheap black case, not the same generic white one. Obviously it didn't work for me, though. Kept spamming 1080p and some other gibberish in the top-left corner.
Did you also see another "clearly marked" USB power inlet, Einstein? ))) Power it, it does not work without power. I ordered 5 of these, they work perfectly (for a $15 device, that is) - I used two of these to hook up AppleTVs to AUX for car monitors.
Got news for you bud, that USB inlet is for devices that do not have power over HDMI. (DVI devices for example) All the devices I have have power over HDMI so that power jack is NOT needed, and yes I did try plugging it in and it makes no difference on theses units that were DOA out of the box. I use these devices to connect security DVR systems to RF modulators to feed cameras out to all the TVs in homes, and I have used several. Some work fine, but I got 2 of them in a row that were dead. Incidentally I have not had to use the USB power on any of them. I don't know about apple TV, as I have never used them on apple TV. I have used them on a PC, multiple secirity DVR, my cable box, my bluray player, a Blackberry tablet, a couple of android tablets, a Blackberry Z10 and Z30 and they worked fine without external power. Even this one worked after I fixed it.
I got the same crap on eBay. For some reason, I can't go through the seller's contact (Before, I bought lots of stuff eBay without any problem, at all!) I needed to use my Firestick with an older (but fantastic) JVC big DLP (AV-P776)! So the HDMI to AV little box looks new, on the one hand; it does display a very low quality picture and a very strange sound! I tried the AV on my upscaling DVD player (has a HDMI that works fine) and on my friend's TV! Confirmation: Crap! All that because, the other LED, LG 42LB5400 picture went very dim: Main board issue, probably!! Aargh! So frustrating!
+Zeke Brown The unit is supposed to be powered by hdmi power. I have used this devices before and have the other one I showed on my security dvr. No power adapter needed. Out of the box the ntsc / pal switch was wired backwards, no it wasn't wired at all, it was going back and forth between pal and ntsc because it wasn't soldered properly. Regardless it did the same, USB power or not. After hard wiring the switch to ntsc as that is what we use here, and clearing the short on the traces at the hdmi connector the unit works. Draws a little more power from the hdmi than my other one, but my tablet, Blu-ray and htpc all drive it fine. My security dvr has power issues and the USB external power is needed on that device but that is OK, because I am using the other device on that application.
princess sagum This one has worked since I fixed the broken switch on it. Use it 24/7 for my security DVR to send the picture to TVs throughout the house.
wish I had watched a few videos before getting this crap.. When I plug in my N64 (PAL) console, there's a text in the upper right corner saying it's an NTSC signal coming from the N64 lol guess I also have to take a look inside
Yes but I buy on both eBay to and sometimes they say they will give you a defect on and then a good one.but you will not get a good one,on anything you do buy from China but some will be good.i go through eBay to get my electronics from.sometimes you'll get a bad one on anything.i will try wish.i did try to get the glue out of my SD card recorder if it gets dark.i do like your videos and get some tips.if you make kits or projects do small regulators.
Interesting...thanks for the tip, I was just looking at these the other day....I'll look for the REI version. My last video I posted was of a cheap Chinese $11USD HDMI 5 port switch...luckily it works fine....check it out if you have time....
Dude I didn't forget power. It gets it over HDMI. Power port is there for old DVI standard such as computer video cards that do not supply power. HDMI 1.1 and above supplies 50mA, of current. Some HDMI ports will supply as much as 500mA of current, so any device that draws less than 50mA can be powered by HDMI directly. I have tested these devices, in cluding this piece of crap after I fixed it on a Zbox MMPC, Blackberry Playbook, Blackberry Z10 and Z30, Proscan 7' tablet, Asus Notepad 10, a Cisco CIS330 IPTV box, Insignia NS-WBRDVD2 BLURAY PLAYER and a Lorex security DVR. Every one of these devices powers it up without external power. My Nvidia card in my desktop does NOT power it up, and that device requires external power.
+Synthematix The seller refunded. I am sure they do this allot. They probably find these units in the garbage and sell them. When someone claims they don't work they refund so they don't get bad feedback.
You can't judge Chinese junk by its cover. Um still in the S video stuff with CRT, or RYB RCA jacks, HDMI to that would be nice. I only have a few flatties and devices with HDMI. So I may need one of them converters on my CRT sets. Do they come with multiple HDMI switchable inputs? I guess I'd search for multiple HDMI to S video. Don
+umajunkcollector I have bought a few of these units. One broke after 3 days and the vendor demanded it back, but they paid the shipping so not a problem. The second worked and is still working. This one didn't, until I fixed it but it is still a shoddy build. I have another device that I will be making a video of, it is an HDMI to component / RGB converter, and the color is a little green. Hopefully I will be able to fix that. I'll film that when I do it.
@@12voltvidsI got the same HDMI2AV off of eBay. I hooked it to either VHS or Betamax VCR and hooked up to the Amazon FireTV Stick and it works perfectly. All I need is a Betamax tape to record a TV show like “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” or the “Angry Video Game Nerd” off of RUclips and it plays perfectly, so problem there, but it works fine, and let’s hope this thing will not fail.
Some do work. I received 1 that has worked perfect from day 1, and 1 that the seller said chuck, and ave me a refund. I fixed that one. A 3rd the seller wanted it back so back it went so he could flog it on another unsuspecting sucker.

That looks like a generic brand ??
friend have one of these converters and the switch does not work NTSC-pal, Might me to elping thanks, sorry if you do not understand me but I am writing from Colombia
REI actually means king in Portuguese
Thanks for the info. I'm a new subscriber & learning a lot from your videos.
HDMI to AV converter with pre-sale surgery $100.00. Without surgery:$12.99.
I love how you tell it how it is....good is good, shit is shit....thank you for being so candid :-)
And thank you for saying SOLDER not SODER
Cheers, Mark from Aust'
+Mark Russell That would be an American thing. They can't say ROOF either! To them it is a RUFF!
:-)
I got problem my dont eaven make sound/video
my one works fine with my laptop but doesent work with my xbox one, pls help
12voltvids
its not for my tv, its for my capture card
+Hypnotosis Gaming I understand that. Wen HDCP involved the xbox is looking for the licensed chipset in the TV. Since the adapter is using a non certified chipset, it will never pass the integrity check, and thus you get no video.
12voltvids
ok
That switch looks used from the beginning - they don't know what quality control means evidently!!!
If used with Google Chrome Cast, it is necedsary a cooler over the Chome, to avoid excessive warm in this. From Brasil.
Heating problem with Chromecast
Just bought one, its hot after 5 minutes. Going to mod it
Got one of these. Mine was somewhat neat looking on the inside, cheap black case, not the same generic white one. Obviously it didn't work for me, though. Kept spamming 1080p and some other gibberish in the top-left corner.
WHY DIDNT YOU POST THE LINKS TO THE GOOD ONE BOTH MADE IN CHINA THEY ARE SO GOOD THA I CANT EVEN FIND THE BRAND
They came from Amazon. So no link.
@@12voltvids I LOOK EVERYWERE AND NOTHING FOUND
Did you also see another "clearly marked" USB power inlet, Einstein? ))) Power it, it does not work without power.
For some reason, I can't go through the seller's contact (Before, I bought lots of stuff eBay without any problem, at all!)
I needed to use my Firestick with an older (but fantastic) JVC big DLP (AV-P776)!
That's what minds doing also flipping back and fourth paid 15.00 from Walmart
I am so happy that i didnt buy this item. Thank you for sharing.
I have bought others, not all of them are bad, but many are. They all look alike, that's the big problem.
Ok =( Thanks for sharing =)
the brand is Orei
how bout plugging the power into it, where it says USB power, that should fix your picture
+Zeke Brown
The unit is supposed to be powered by hdmi power.
Im buying this one now waiting for it i hope i dont get crap broken one
princess sagum
This one has worked since I fixed the broken switch on it. Use it 24/7 for my security DVR to send the picture to TVs throughout the house.
They are all the same, sometimes the sound doesn't work, sometimes the video, else what can you expect from China?
Encryption
wish I had watched a few videos before getting this crap.. When I plug in my N64 (PAL) console, there's a text in the upper right corner saying it's an NTSC signal coming from the N64 lol
guess I also have to take a look inside
Check the switch setting on the side.
Mine was labeled reversed.
+JacksJunkDotCom I have one of those 5 port HDMI switches I paid 15.00 for and it works fine.
I found the Orei version and it costs $40 on Amazon..
i think my will also work fine :)
This part is very good.
I dare him to build his own I am sure there are ways to
Solution take one little grey box from my broke flat screen sawder it in.
I got one. It works great, out the box
So did I but I also got 2 that were bad. One fixed the other sent back
Dude, you forgot to put power to it.
My Nvidia card in my desktop does NOT power it up, and that device requires external power.
id be sending that back.
They refunded me and told me to chuck it, so I fixed it. No, I didn't tell them I fixed it either.
i going to get one for a project 7in monitor and really hope it dont look like that.
Thank you
I just bought one off a shopping app called geek. I can see a picture but its flickering badly. but it was only $5. Piece of shit indeed
There is a USB port to power it
Makes no difference. That is for devices that do not have power over hdmi. The devices I was using to power it do.
powering it up doesn't solve the problem , still not working .
You should have "switched" to a better one
+Synthematix
The seller refunded. I am sure they do this allot. They probably find these units in the garbage and sell them.
When someone claims they don't work they refund so they don't get bad feedback.
THANK YOU,,,,,,,Sr........
That's shenzhen finest! You paid to much Lol!
+Michael Lowery Well at least it ended up being FREE and works fine now that I finished the manufacturing process with my soldering iron.
not really bad for a cheap one
Most of the electronics look used !!
chinese still selling thsese things on ebay !!! what a shame !! mine never worked , I think I threw it on garbage
Some do work. I received 1 that has worked perfect from day 1, and 1 that the seller said chuck, and ave me a refund. I fixed that one. A 3rd the seller wanted it back so back it went so he could flog it on another unsuspecting sucker.
Can I get the link to the one that worked since you bought it?
can you help fixing mine ? I saw someone getting pictures just as he plugged the power . may be I need to find the good power supply . I gave it to my cousin , he managed to make it working on his flat tv , but flat lcd tv aleady have hdmi
yes this is crap. Like all chinese products (for example Samsung and LG). What to expect from people that have worked on a fields 20y ago??
I just get one for my TV i build i open up inside completely different . mine more simple i haven't test it i don't have HDMI cable with me now. i.ibb.co/y04sn29/HD.jpg
