@@rosemarieperks4468 It’s hard to choose, but I like Curves, Deep Blue, Orange Dawn, and Maya all more. Touching the Ether is a cool piece too - it blew my mind when I heard Ian perform it (and Deep Blue) live and tell the story of the piece.
I heard him play this in person and it took my breath away! Without question one of my favourite composers. I adore playing this piece! When I first started flute, this was exactly the kind of piece I pictured myself playing - absolutely beautiful!
My teacher suggested for me to play this piece for solo and ensemble and i’m so glad I did and now i’m going to state. I absolutely love this piece I didn’t know I had the skills to play this wonderful piece.
I played this for my degree recital and I have to say that this was one of my most favorite pieces to perform! For those who are wondering and have not purchased the music yet, the highest note is technically the second C above the staff, however there is an ossia (written as "play if able!" lol) which goes to the second D above the staff, which is how it is performed in this recording. It is very possible! Do not let the music intimidate you. With some practice, the runs (even the ones in the ossia, 21 in a beat!) will come as second nature. Enjoy playing!
I got the sheet music towards the end of 11th grade, and I'm performing it for my 12th grade recital. I'm very fond of this piece too, and I really enjoy the technical challenges as well. I will nail that 21-note beat eventually and all the other ossias eventually!
Ian Clarke is one of the best things to happen to flute. I heard this, and instantly decided to add this to my senior recital. It really is just a great piece.
After listening to this a few times, I have to say this may possibly be to my knowledge, the greatest composition for Flute (and piano) of our time!!! PHENOMENAL!!!!!
nah, it's good but I wouldn't say that it's anywhere near the greatest modern flute piece. it's not even the best Ian Clarke piece, let alone coming anywhere close to some of the marvelous flute concertos that modern composers have been writing the last couple decades.
There is a traditional Greek phrase that says just a giukini pie for anyone of us, or, de gustibus non est disputandum...I don't care if anyone's like or not this piece of music, because every one is free to like or not like something in any degree. Personally I love Ian Clarke' s music and yes I have played Maya in a concert in Thessaloniki Greece and loved it. It is dreamy and smooth and feels like being exactly a Maya duet.
I played this yesterday at this event our school went to... I had been working months on this and I DID IT and I just felt so accomplished and all I focused on when performing was the beauty of it. Ian Clarke is truly a master at his work. I want to compose like him someday. Maybe not as a career but it’s definitely on my bucket list. I’m gonna remember when I performed this piece forever.
I'm trying to play this for a high school solo and ensemble, I just realized that I don't have anywhere near the musical knowledge to perform all the musicality that is in this recording. This shows me just how far I have to go, and I am very grateful to see what true mastery of an instrument looks like
Get the sheet music. Play it ugly from beginning to end. Then break it down into chunks, one or two bars at time. Slow the difficult parts down until you are comfortable with each bar. Repeat, repeat, repeat until you own it.
I Absolutely adore Ian Clarke's works! This one is by far, my favourite though... I'm learning it for my flute lessons, and played it for hours on end without growing tired of it! I'm just having a hard time with the 64th and 32nd note sections, but it'll come with practice ;)
I'm about to play this tomorrow for my recital and I can honestly say it's one of my favorite solos I've played, I'm nervous but also excited because no one at my teachers studio has played it yet
Having passed my grade 8 a few years ago, I can say the recent Ian Clarke pieces are probably too difficult for this grade (Hypnosis and The Mad Hatter), amazing as they sound. I do love this piece I'm doing a recital with it in a few months. To anyone who wants to play this, play Sunstreams first - much easier to master and on the easier end of grade 8.
Going back listening to this piece is just simply amazing!! Best part is I'm learning this piece for my jury! My flute teacher approved of it so much that she ordered 2 copies online; one for her and another for me. :D
Just found this piece in my high school music library, listened to it and immediately chose it for uil solo and ensemble. I’m not at the level to play this yet but I hope to get there in the next two months

@katie holton I felt the same way as I play clarinet too. I would recommend a few pieces that are really lovely to play that (I find at least) are close to this contemporary style, these are; petite piece (debussy), premiere rhapsodie (debussy) and Claribel (eugene bozza).
TheNavyShorts Roll out an insane amount. You can see when I play this that I roll out a ridiculous amount approaching those bars. Then as I go up to the high D, I just blow straight across. Coming down, then roll back in. I couldn't do it all until I rolled out a lot.
@MarbleArts2011 It's essentially a performance exam. You work during your lessons developing a repertoire that you perform in front of a panel. And then the panel gives you all types of feedback.
My teacher gave this piece to me and it's soo beautiful but at the same time so frustrating that, even if I could play it without making mistakes (which I still can't since I still need to practice), I won't be able to play it as beautifully as this flute :'D
