I’m commenting 3 yrs later, but here I go. It’s so very helpful to see videos like this of a real-life, honest-to-goodness, working kitchen, laundry room, pantry, etc. It truly helps those of us trying to get to a similar point in life. (ie: Can I have an open air space above the stove? How do I hang knives on the wall…do they stay put? Wait! You can have a homestead farm kitchen without a true window! Whaaat!?) Can I mix my metals? Etc etc etc
Hi..my name is Marcia. I am a 74 yr old grandma trying to make my new condo look like me...old and wrinkled!!! Wish I new your name. I found out abt your channel from Lumnah acres! Love their channel and I now know I have found a new favorite! Your kitchen is amazing. I love you cheerful helpful attitude and will be watching you lots! Love your home..it is amazing. I lost my husband yrs ago...we were so hopeful if having a home like yours but our God had other plans...so here I am...starting over with my new condo and enjoying trying to make it look old ! I would love to see cooking videos. You have made my day with your beautiful smile and lovely kiddies. I'll be watching from northern Illinois ! Love ya oxox
I know this is overstating, but you “saved my life” with your knife holder placement! I had no room under cabinets for my magnetic strip in my new house. SO SAD! Then I found your tour and the lightbulb turned on! A friend cut my long strip in half with a jigsaw (yes, it cuts through magnets! Who knew?) I woke up three times that night, walked to the kitchen to look again and smile. This is MY kitchen! Looking forward to seeing more from you.
Who cares what’s trendy. Do what works for you ❤️ I had open shelving in my kitchen. We had lower cabinets and instead of any uppers we had open shelves. After 3 years I HATED IT! seriously anything you put on those shelves gets NASTY. If you cook with any fats the oils get in the air and coat everything. I had a lot of dishes that were more season but I had to have for serving and such and it was such a pain to keep clean. I also had butcher block- it was lovely but VERY high maintenance. I had all this before it became trendy and now when I see it trending I just shake my head. My experience with many of the current trends have told me to go with what lasts, what I like and forget what is trendy!❤️
That Daly Life Yeah, same here! Open shelves in the kitchen are truly not a good idea. I always ‚warn‘ people about it, when I see them planning something like that, but do they listen? No, of course not. 😣 Wish, someone had warned me...remodeling is such a hazzle, especially, if you don’t own the place.
You don't strike me as a woman who worries too much about what "they" say the current trend or style is. It's 'your' home, and it looks lovely, warm, clean and family friendly. (:
I think the only reason people ever had open cabinets was that they couldn't afford the doors. I tried just one open cabinet, and besides the grease and dust, if you have pets you will have fur in your cabinets and on your dishes. If you have cats, they will likely think it is an invitation to see if they can squeeze in there with your dishes. I cringe every time I see some show doing a remodel and putting in open cabinets in a kitchen. The only reason it works in a restaurant is that they are constantly going through their dishes, and cleaning everything. I like your remodel and sensible doors. The hickory is lovely and fits the period and place.
Your home and kitchen are beautiful. I love watching you homestead and watching your children do their chores and help u is so heartwarming. I do what I can growing vegetables but I'm disabled and can't do as much as I'd like. I have. Been fortunate that my husband's job is ran by a wonderful family. They gave their employees some type of veg. Fruit or meat every week, even though the job has nothing to do with food. I started watching you because the food was pileling up. It's brought me so much enjoyment since I lost my job due to disability. I'm doing sauerkraut this week watched you video. Thank you you helped me feel a purpose in life again.
Love your kitchen cabinets and counter tops. I'm not about white cabinets, show to much dirty finger prints. Also open cabinets you'll have to dust. Just one more thing to do. My husband took an old metal railing and hug it long ways, (looks like a ladder) and put hooks on it, to hang our cast iron pans. I love it and get lots of compliments.
This is my first time visiting your channel I love your video and I must say it’s so refreshing to see a home that is not all pure white and curated with the latest trends. I have an older home that is full of beautiful wood and I really enjoy warm and cozy color palettes. It is so refreshing to see a kitchen being used for its intended purpose and not just to take pictures your home seems like a very inviting cozy and warm home full of love
I love your cabinets . My deceased husband was a contractor and he built my parents house and all the cabinets and a hutch and entertainment center and bookcases are all out of solid hickory also . there was enough wood left to make me a hutch and bookcase that I love very much. it's very beautiful and solid and timeless .. thank you for for showing your kitchen . I like it very much.
I just found your channel and this posting. Thanks for the tour of your homey kitchen that looks out on your living room. You can cook and keep an eye on the kids as they play at the big table. Thanks for the behind the scene look at your 'new' kitchen and the remodel. Your home looks comfortable and inviting. There is much love in your home. You folks will be happy in this home for many years.
Love this type of video. Shows us the “not always perfect” side of homesteading. I love your “function over fashion” idea. But also love how it all ties together and looks beautiful. Beautiful space! Loved this video!
Love it, Jill! We just moved to a mountain homestead and our kitchen is part of an open kitchen/dining/living space too. I love how practical your kitchen set up is.
I love those hickory cabinets. I too have the upper cabinets and plan on keeping them. Like everyone else, I like the look of open shelving, but they are sooooo impractical. Especially in the kitchen. The shelves and everything on them collect so much dust and build up from steam, smoke and grease. Cabinets do too, but all you have to do is wipe the doors and the sides of the cabinets. Everything inside is protected. lol I have to balance between what I like and what makes life easier. For me, the storage and ease of maintenance that the closed cabinets offer is a practicality I cannot ignore in my busy life. If I want to display something, I have a some upper cabinets with glass doors. You can see what is in it, but I don't have to keep it dusted. I also cannot imagine not having upper cabinets, like what I see in magazines. The storage of cabinets means more to me than whatever decoration I might like to hang on the wall. (which also will require more dusting. Especially if you heat with a wood stove).
Hi Jill, I enjoyed seeing your kitchen. I love your more rustic style kitchen...it’s very warm and inviting! I enjoy all styles of videos that give a well rounded picture of homesteading lifestyle. It’s great to learn new things whether recipes or garden and livestock. But also just to see your surroundings and how you acquire items for your life and use them to make things work better or easier in your day to day lives! Thanks for sharing! Jillian
Love your remodel. We had a house that was built in the 1880's. It had square nails, 16-inch wide wood planks for walls and horsehair plaster! I feel your pain! LOL! It is really a labor of love to remodel an old place and make it yours. I love your hickory cabinets! Don't worry about what is trendy at the moment, you have to make your space work for your and make it something you want to look at day after day.
Who cares if it "is not trendy". Who wants to be "trendy"? I don't. I rather be unique like you are and your kitchen is very beautiful!! You guys have done a great job. This is my 1st time watching this.vlog. Keep being you and do not change!!🤗😊❤💝
I am so glad I came across your channel while looking for homemade butterscotch pudding recipes. I absolutely love it. I too live in an old farmhouse. This one was built in 1919 and I am so happy here. Just wanted you to know I really enjoyed your kitchen tour and will be trying the pudding recipe soon. 😊
Getting ready to renovate a 1930's lake place kitchen. You have inspired me. I too do NOT want a "trendy" look but want to, instead, maintain the cabin style. You are SO genuine. I could listen to you all day! thanks.
Love everything you and Christian have done with your home. It's livable. I don't strive to stay trendy, modern or up to date because I don't like changing out my entire life every time someone comes up with something new. When we build our house back in the late '80s I left out the wall between our kitchen and living room because everywhere we'd ever lived if I was cooking someone always called me in to see something on tv and something would burn. So we've had open concept from the beginning and it's gotten more open as our kids have made homes of their own and we've taken down more walls. I love videos just like this or even when you're teaching in your kitchen because as I'm listening I'm also looking over your shoulder to see how you display what you use. I have begun to make a few changes in my kitchen and it's helping free up room in my cabinets as I bring the active components out into the open. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love your thought process, I am also one that stews about trends and tries to steer clear of them as they quickly look dated. My husband thinks I over think these things too much but you want to like them for a long time and it does save money in the long run, same goes for a classic wardrobe. Thanks for the tour! I like the real life behind the scenes videos plus the tutorials, whatever you do is great and learn a lot from you.
Loved this "impromptu" style video and tour! I like your sit down educational style too, but mixing it up is fun. Also, very cool info on the quartz counter! I tend to lean butcher block or concrete too, and didn't know about the upkeep with concrete. Definitely going to look into quartz for the durability and ease...because kids!
My new home was built in 1891 (except for the additions which are also all older than me - I started counting this year from 25 years old PLUS experience🤣 and my kids are a little older than yours. We need to renovate. The house is made of 18” thick limestone. That will always be original - well, until it won’t stand anymore. But we have had soooo much to do. Overwhelm has been the going rate. We are 6 mos behind in all of our projects because 10 days before we got here my husband was surprisingly diagnosed with cancer (he’s never sick). 3 days later surgery, 6 days later travel out of state and VRBO, 1 day later move in. Thanks for all the fabulous ideas for our renovations! We want to keep some of the items as original looking as possible and other elements will be more industrial and/or modern looking. We are fully integrated with WI-FI now!
Love your kitchen and all the info on the house! I’m planning on redoing my kitchen counters at one point and I couldn’t figure out what kind I wanted so the quartz is an amazing idea that I’ll be looking more deeply into for sure!!!
LOVED the tour of your home!!!! Thank you for sharing!!! YES!!! Love the idea of the mixture of both - whatever you want to do we’ll be THRILLED with it!! So blessed that you share so much!!! I’ve wanted to start a sourdough starter but after reading several blogs about it it was just so complicated but you just gave us this, “Hey guys - just do it! It’s so easy.” confidence that I did!! And .... you’re right!!! It’s so easy!!!! Bless your heart. If it wasn’t for you I’d still just be wishing! Love you and your family!!!! Thank you!!!
I'm watching and commenting five years later and.... the open cabinet trend is so GONE! You were right to do what works best for you. I re-did my kitchen in 2020 and chose to skip the open shelving, however we went with some rustic cedar open shelving in the laundry room. I'm still good with it, but it's Hard to keep it looking straightened up when you have a big family. I also LOVE the hickory you chose. Very chic and at the same time westerny. I also chose shiplap for the backsplash, and to this date absolutely love it. I think it will never go out of style. Great home you have, you should be very proud of all you've accomplished. From Atlanta, GA! All the best.
I love this type of video. I’ve drooled over your bit of open shelving a lot and your knife blocks and now I know how I can add them to my own kitchen! Thanks for sharing.
I love both types of video! You are so generous to give us a peek into your real life and also teach us wonderful tips and tricks for homemaking. You have a winning format! Your home is warm and loving and you have real useful knowledge to impart.
Love the openness and how you've done the kitchen! With kitchen cupboards what's in them and the shelves don't get dusty soon. You're home looks wonderfully homey. 👌
Mix of both, love to learn what other remodeling jobs evolved from, and ideas for food, gardening, health, homesteading. Although I'm not a homesteaders, I love those who do....love that animals....the babies....
I'm not crazy about hickory cabinets but I think your shiplap backsplash is right on. My late grandmother from Kansas had the same and seeing yours brings back fond memories. Thanks!
I loved the tour of your fabulous kitchen. Thank you. I like the old look and never worry about what is trendy or what may go out. I know what I like, and I am the one who has to live with it. Others can do what they want to live with. Your home is very cozy and welcoming. I love it. This is the 2nd video I have happened on of yours, and you have a very nice way about you. I have subscribed and will go back and look for more. Thank you.
The great thing about your videos is, they're timeless. What I needed to know 2 years ago was how to can and make yogurt. Now, I am at a kitchen remodel, so your thought processes and decision integers are very pertinent to me, even though two years old. The best part, honestly, was Christian's involvement in the project and his thoughtfulness toward practical usage. Thank you!
This is my second video with you. I love your kitchen. I think it is unique and would never see it in a trendy magazine, and that makes it even better! Thanks for sharing
I enjoyed watching your video very much. I like the choices you made in your kitchen and the reasoning behind it. It has helped me decide between going with what I like, what is useful and practical versus what may be trendy in my new kitchen. I also like your presentation style in your videos, very casual and personable. Your children are precious by the way.
Tina here, 2 years after you posted this one. I agree, trendy is just...well. I love the hickory, and open shelves would certainly not be a good idea in a place that is very much lived in! And now you have me considering quartz countertops when we manage to do our kitchen...in a few years? We have the capability to build our own cabinets, and access to Windsor Plywood's selection of any wood from around the world, which of course makes it hard to choose. So many beautiful exotics that can spice up things like hickory or birch with little accents. We like the idea of butcher block but really already ruled it out. Maybe for my big cutting board, since I tend to do all our cutting and wrapping of deer, pork, etc on the kitchen table...which we will be selling once we get the time to put together our own iteration out of old fir beams we got from someone who salvaged buildings on their old farm.
I bought this coffee mug rack from the Magnolia Journal Website and used it in my antique booth to show cups for sale. The antique Mall closed and I had no idea what to do with it. Now I can try this great idea in my kitchen.
I like both! These are super helpful as we're looking for our farmhouse and I also am learning everything I can while I'm waiting. I've acquired many kitchen skills and gardening!
This has nothing to do with this video, but awhile back I read about how you make your own tallow.I use a lot of lard in our cooking and never even realised it wasn't pure lard. So, you made me want to make my own, but I kept putting off the idea of driving 30 minutes to the closest meat market, thinking is it really worth the price of gas. Today, while at the grocery store, on a whim I asked the man at the meat counter if he sells leaf fat. He doesn't have any, but tomorrow he is cutting up ribeyes and will have about 5 pound of fat to trim off. He said that he could sell it to me tomorrow for 25 CENTS! All of it! Thank you. He made my day and you have made my day.
Loved the video and kids in the back! Very well-behaved and loved the chicken hair! Creative! You and your husband make a good team. Love the cabinets with an open shelf. To me, perfect balance. Yes, I like your functional kitchen and your choice for quartz gave me something to think about ! I love the sink! Our homes aren't a showcase, , but something to be lived in and orderly - our home, with a little of our personality and character! I can feel the love, yes, we do end up spending most of our time in the kitchen! too Well thought out! Amen to That Daily LIfe comment!
Its got a great look now and if the other guy had taken out all the original character anyway, what the hay! I have an old house but its neat that you do YOUR farmhouse style NOT what “they” say is authentic. So you basically built a whole new house! CONGRATS AND GOD BLESS IT ALL. BEAUTIFUL.
I love your style.....it's your own and it's practical!! I'm very practical as well! But you did a great job of making it look warm and inviting! Thank you for being real and for sharing!
LOVE the behind the scenes and teaching. A mixture sounds good to me!! I watch your videos while I'm ironing...sure makes that dreaded job MUCH more pleasant! My eleven year old daughter LOVES to watch too! Keep up the good work!
Great video. Love the kitchen. Love your laundry room. My cabinets are hickory as well. My house is like a “ranch” house. I like the white cabinets people have today but I appreciate my cabinets. They are “timeless” and that’s nice as trendy things well- they keep changing.
Love it!! We are just finishing a new build and I am currently finishing my kitchen. Enjoyed your comment and feedback. We are also going with Quartz counters. I have been struggling with the backsplash. so will look into the shiplap idea.
I loved the whole look and feel of the countertops most of all. Even though you agonized over the decision, it is def. the best look for what you wanted. It gave me a great deal of info for when I have such a project.
I love the mix of both types of videos! We are looking to buy a friend's 12 acre farm and possibly some animals as well and this is all new to my family so I am absolutely loving your videos! I know nothing will prepare me like the real deal, but the homesteading community on youtube is really helping! Your kitchen is beautiful by the way!
love the lights over the island. I'd like to see what you're doing for garden prep & gardening this year. will you grow & preserve enough for an entire year
Whats best for you is okay. You do not have to justify to anybody. I must admit I agree with your thought process as it pertains to your decorating choices. So I would have made basically the same choices. Love the open concept.
Beautiful kitchen! I really like the old window you installed above your sink. I have the Sinkology fireclay farmhouse sink and I absolutely love it! Your copper one is so pretty, too!
I love your kitchen! We really USE our kitchen too and I love so much of your style! It makes sense! I can’t get behind white cabinets either. All I can think is the constant scrubbing 😳 I love the impromptu style “behind the scenes” type videos. I’d love videos on how you incorporate your kids in farm life!
There are paint kits that can "rough up" or create a rustic wood look on those white doors-at least until you find the ones you really want! Love the rustic vibe in your house!
Love your kitchen! I love the consept of you like to hang funtional tools on the wall. They arent just for looks and fake. Like your knife magnet, your open shelves, and your pot filler. I might try one when i remodel.
Love your kitchen window. You can leave little love notes on the "outside" of the window to surprise your family members. Hopefully they will return the gesture to you. 🥰
Your casa. (home). So much love. In it. Your. Both a positive as nd creative couple. Very very Blessed! Your children!!! Such good helpers. Very well mannered. May you all make lots of memories. Full of love 💕. Health y lots of happiness. May all your dreams come true!! You have great ideas Very glad you have on Utube!!! Thank you. Your very hard working I am so proud of both of you. Your down to earth. Love that !

We are fully integrated with WI-FI now!
Love the behind the scenes teaching videos. A nice mix would be great! Thanks for all you show us!
Trends come and trends go. You do you. Love your kitchen! I love, love , love your sink.
I definitely enjoy this type of video, Jill. Thanks so much for this and other videos, plus your website. Cheers, Ardith
Hi there..Al from 'Lumnah Acres' recomended your homestead recipes...Looking forward..Lovely house and kitchen!💥😊
Jill, ur house is so warm and cozy, I think it has a-lot of character. Love how its opened to the family room.
I love this type of video. I’ve drooled over your bit of open shelving a lot and your knife blocks and now I know how I can add them to my own kitchen! Thanks for sharing.
I have always loved your kitchen when it's in photos/videos! I love your real life/farm life videos :) Thank you, as always, for sharing with us!
I love both types of video! You are so generous to give us a peek into your real life and also teach us wonderful tips and tricks for homemaking. You have a winning format! Your home is warm and loving and you have real useful knowledge to impart.
Your kitchen is fabulous. I wouldn't change a thing. I love decor based on function.
Thanks for the feedback Sallie! :)
Loved the video! To answer your question- BOTH. A mix of casual and tutorials= AWESOME!
Thank you!
Love your kitchen I cook for a living. So used to a big kitchen and come home to a small one.You for sure have my dream one.
You didn't talk about your herb drying rack on the wall (at least I think you didn't). Did you make it? It looks so neat!
Someone else asked this same question above. Jill said it was actually a "mason jar" rack she got from decorsteals.com/. :)
I like a mix of both. Whatever you want to share, I know I will enjoy. I know that doesn't help, but it true.
I don't care about trends...I love y'alls kitchen!! It's my kind of kitchen...that sink is fantastic ❤👏❤
I love how you used a a coffee mug rack to dry herbs and onions, etc. Great idea and use of an otherwise non usable wall space.
Enjoyed the Kitchen Tour. LOVE IT. The open look reminds me of the house we built. Thanks for sharing. NEAT.
Very nice! I enjoyed seeing your progress. The reality! Homesteading... closed cabinets, oh! Yes!
Love, love. love impromtu behind the scenes videos! Thank you!
Your kitchen is fabulous! Also love how candid you were about just not having time to be a fussy cleaner and forgetting laundry.
Great video again! Love the unmentioned windmill wheel!
Love everything and also the herb drying rack!
Its got a great look now and if the other guy had taken out all the original character anyway, what the hay! I have an old house but its neat that you do YOUR farmhouse style NOT what “they” say is authentic. So you basically built a whole new house! CONGRATS AND GOD BLESS IT ALL. BEAUTIFUL.
You're an inspiration. This is our hope and dream and the coming year. So glad I watched your video ❤️
Great job, the kitchen is beautiful and has that rustic charm.
Thanks Jill! I always enjoy your videos
I really like the center counter in the kitchen as they really add a comfortable production space when doing your kitchen chores.
love the lights over the island. I'd like to see what you're doing for garden prep & gardening this year. will you grow & preserve enough for an entire year
Thanks! ANd yes, lots of gardening videos to come!
Thanks for sharing your home it’s lovely. And I like the mix keep it up. Thanks so much!
Your kitchen is gorgeous and looks like a joy to work in. I love it all!
I love your kitchen! I never followed trends. I do what I like. You did a great job, its beautiful!
I love the mixed up videos 👍 Thanks for sharing your kitchen with us!
The tours are so much fun!
Whats best for you is okay. You do not have to justify to anybody. I must admit I agree with your thought process as it pertains to your decorating choices. So I would have made basically the same choices. Love the open concept.
Your kitchen is just beautiful!!!! I love the window!!! ❤️👌🏻😊
Beautiful kitchen! I really like the old window you installed above your sink. I have the Sinkology fireclay farmhouse sink and I absolutely love it! Your copper one is so pretty, too!
Sinkology makes some awesome stuff!
We have the same middle name!
It's a good name!😊💛
I love your kitchen! We really USE our kitchen too and I love so much of your style! It makes sense! I can’t get behind white cabinets either. All I can think is the constant scrubbing 😳 I love the impromptu style “behind the scenes” type videos. I’d love videos on how you incorporate your kids in farm life!
There are paint kits that can "rough up" or create a rustic wood look on those white doors-at least until you find the ones you really want! Love the rustic vibe in your house!
We love these video, it's very cozy intimate fun and very nice... Keep them coming
Im so in love!!! Your window is AMAZING! .. OH.. AND YOUR POT FILLER!! AND.. AND..
:O!!
Im happy i found you!
God Bless!!
My 12yr old daughter and I like both kinds of videos!

I also like your out door chats and seeing around the Homestead
I love that window!!
👍👍👍
I would LOVE to see more of this.
Beautiful kitchen, great choices. Well done!
