I still don't understand. Why not fly Air Canada or Air India? Seriously, why have more stops. I live in NY suburbs, always fly AI either from JFK or EWR, or don't care for secondary airlines. Best. Avoid ME3 carriers and EU carriers.
Air India is not the best in any way. We always had good travel with no hassel via European/Arab airlines if u have a stop over or going there. The best is Virgin or British airlines. These people just had bad luck. It's busiest time of the year to travel.

I had same experience recently in september end. I also had connecting flights between Air India and United airlines. Air india flight got delayed at Delhi airport flying to New Jersey. So they gave us new tickets for connecting flight from Newark. When went to the United Airlines counter they say talk to Air India in another terminal. Air India said talk to United. Wonder how they are in an Alliance. In this process, flight took off and we obviously missed it and waited at the airport for 14 hours till the next available flight. PATHETIC SERVICE!!!
You should email United and let them know of this situation. They most probably will reimburse some of the price or give you points. Also if you have used a travel credit card to book your tickets you are able to launch a claim with them as well as most of travel credit cards have travel insurance.
This very same thing happened with me and my family back in Jan 2010. Same two airlines were involved but at Chicago airport. In my case, Air India was at fault. We spent 2 days in freezing Chicago. I vowed to myself, never to take AirIndia flight ever again. United staff was very courteous unlike AirIndia staff deputed from India...absolutely unprofessional.

I hv taken flight from Toronto to JKF New York with United Airline on 2nd Nov then direct flight by Air India to Delhi.I hv not faced any difficulties luckly.

Now is time to take credit card claim for delayed and badges delayed they will pay you for cloths food charger etc also do write united they will help you with some credit and keep it mind always fly mildest airline .
Yeah I had similar experience with these alliance airliners. Book in emirates or other gulf airlines you will not go wrong. This is the choice we take because tickets are cheaper.
Many yrs ago when I traveled from Australia to Kerala I went to a local travel agency and first thing I said not with Air India ..they all stared laughing and said thats what all the Italians here say not with Altalia when flying to italy.( It was an Italian majority town I lived )

Did they have to collect the luggage in New York even though they are travelling on a single/one ticket (Toronto-Newark-New Delhi) ? If so I feel that's the most annoying thing carrying that luggage (imagine having 2 checked bags) and then doing all this. Why did they have to collect checked luggage at EWR ?

agar ye video pehle dalte somehow we could have picked u up from Newark....we are about 20 mins away...anyway, check your credit card's benefits section with which you booked the tickets - they cover trip delays, baggage delays, and a lot of other things, provided you booked with that same card....enjoy the rest of your trip
I had travelled San Francisco to New Delhi from United 2 times during Covid restrictions when the rules were super tight and I had never had any problem with them

This is not true I work for United at EWR and they use same 777 or 787 that comes from Beijing for Delhi. It’s a single aircraft operation. Agents at gate gave you wrong info

Air Canada is another worst airline

Have travelled many times in United but never had any issues. This is a peak season with lot of weather issues.
United airlines & NJ, Chicago airport to be avoided. Rude bastards all the way.
Avoid Newark airport & United . This combo always has problems
