Planning Your First Kickstarter as an Artist

Hey! I found this super helpful- I’ve been looking for Kickstarter videos that focus on artists with smaller platforms because (with everything going) I’d love to make my first Kickstarter to make a zine. I currently have a large body of work from May art challenges that I did in advance and I’ve gotten more followers because of it so I think I’m ready. The only question I’m trying to wrap my brain around is stretch goals. Do I add stretch goals as I go once I see more people are backing a project or should I include that in my original video? And if/when I make the goal, how do I know who pledged for more content or does everyone who pledged get that extra content? Idk if that makes sense but thanks for making this video!
Personally, I recommend having a vague idea of what you want your stretch goals to be, but to only announce the first one to start with. I don't think I talked about stretch goals in my original video, just in the project description. What I ended up doing was announcing one stretch goal at a time as we hit the previous goals, that way each time we hit a goal there was an exciting new announcement.
And when you add stretch goals, you can specify which tiers will get the rewards. For instance, in mine, my first stretch goal was to add extra pages to the zine. This affected people who bought the digital zine and the physical zine. The stretch goal for the holographic print only affected backers who backed at the "print" tier. And the last stretch goal for stickers came with every physical order (but not the digital zine orders). It's all up to you.
Stretch goals are usually treated as an automatic add-on (for instance, "ever backer gets a sticker") rather than something the backer has to pledge extra for. If you want those "pledge extra for this thing" then you would add a new reward tier.
