Without exaggerating, this video is the best tutorial i've ever seen in a while. They show you how to do it by alot of real examples.. I hate it when a move is demonstrated in a very slow and step oriented, with very few examples. Please keep it up!
I can hit a slice serve now . The basic slice serve and the extreme slice serve that can only be hit on the forehand side. Only serve left I want to get a grips of is getting more power in my kick serve !
Using 4:06 as an example, here are a few tips: 1)Keep on your toes as the guy does when he throws the ball up and feet apart for comfort. 2)When raising the arm, allow the hand holding your racquet to be at or above the height of your head.
Nice instruction, I use eastern backhand for all my serves. This really imparts way more spin for slice, kicks and twist serves. The eastern backhand is a bit more difficult to master, pronation for flat serves are really difficult to master. I confuse my opponents with eastern backhand serves. Give it a shot and see how you do.
I like this video because it appreciates the left handed player. Instead on me having to mirror what a right handed player is doing, I can easily follow along and learn from the left handed girl.
@415Underdog Top Spin serve is thrown right over your head and you brush up on the ball, spin serve is tossed to the side and you brush on the side of the ball
Dude, the fact that you are a recreational player says a lot. I play at university standard and my first serve is my main weapon. I can hit it at around 120mph max and probably get 65% of first serves in on an average match day. If I hit serves at the pace and with the basic technique that you do I would get 90+% first serves in. You cannot compare between standards!!
I learnt some sort of slice serve off this video and it works however on closer inspection I think I need to hit the ball on the other side of the racket ! Lol . It works anyway . Maybe this will make it even more of a better serve .
This serve is incredibly useful in doubles. Most of the times, I'd rather toss the ball further right (right-handed), just to gain more spin and control.
@Genius2419 Every professional tennis player has their first serve as a flat serve. If it doesn't go in then they use (most likely) a top spin serve knowing that there is a high chance of it getting in and difficult to return (if carried out successfully).
thanks a lot for the great video. So you make contact at the side of the ball, 3 o'clock. now if you rotate the imaginary clock counterclockwise (from the top of the clock). Should you hit the ball from 9 to 3 o'clock or like 10: 30 to 4 30 o'clock?
Great set of video clips - focuses on the key points! Worth watching a few of these before each match. ps: Anyone in London UK mid- intermediate level, let me know and we'll fix up a game. I'm Fitness4London on the LondonTennis website too.
I do the same, don't try to hard keep doing a second serve, and slow down and make sure your form is right,... and continuously gain training of placing the ball, and once you achieve that, star to speed up the pace... I just started getting the ball int he court so I will start needing to speed up the process... o.0 and js, I also missed by a mile lmao
@waspsrugbydude151410 i think he meant the ball... hit the racquet on the outside of the ball instead of on the back of it.... if that's the part you are referring to...
If you are learning ( which this video is for ) you do master the basic serve (flat) if you can hit a serve with all your strength I consider that as having a serve mastered , in that if you miss it , you know exactly what you did wrong
@GetMySkin Me too, for some reason I can't hit any spin on my serves, if I try to it lands short or goes to the opposite service box. I guess I'm not hitting upward enough.
@Kiser153 uh okay, haven't noticed the different racquets. but it would be easier to show the differences of ball toss and technique with only 1 guy hitting the serves. beginners might also not notice that there are 2 guys hitting different serves.
well, the first thing i noticed was that the guy uses different stances for his slice serve and kick/flat serves. i hope he worked on that. easy to find out how he is going to hit his serve.
So the difference between a kick (topspin) serve and a slice serve is that during the kick serve the racquet makes contact with the ball from the "back" and the slice serve makes contact with the "side" of the ball? Is the overall motion with the hitting arm entirely the same? I am a bit confused about those two things to be honest.
mikehoncho83 Dont know if this can help you or not, but when i slice, i rotate the racquet around the ball when i hit it (if that makes sense). Just before i swing down to make contact with the ball, i rotate my wrist to the right (i am right handed) and it creates a slow, but very effective spin. After contact has been made, the strings shouldnt be facing you, which means you can move straight back into the ready position. When i slice, i find it most effective to be: 1. When on the right hand side, stand on or as close to the tram lines as you can while still being able to get the serve in. (You can use this rule of thumb, if you can hit in a straight line consistently, stand near the tram lines. If you cannot hit straight, stand near the center line.) 2. The other most effective place to stand is next to the center line when on the left hand side and aim as close to the service box center line as possible while using spin. This makes it extremely difficult because a center line shot is not only hard to hit, but it also is moving away from the player, meaning he has to move much faster. (If you are left handed, both these are reversed) When playing on the right hand side near the tram lines, it is possible to hit an ace without even hitting the ball hard. If you master the slice serve, you can hit the ball in the very bottom left of the court, which with spin, causes the ball to move directly to the left and either bounce back into their side of the net, or bounce into the wall/ fence way before they can get close. Either way it is a very effective shot.
PLEASE HELP!!! fyb2007 says to have the racket face point towards the court you are aiming to and just use the way the racket is moving to put spin but this is saying to hit the outside so there is spin!!! WHICH ONEE??? i dont know which to trust!!! they both have such good lessons
Finding a slice serve hard quite hard . I seem to get American twist when I hit it to my forehand side . Defiantly the hardest. Serve I,ve ever tried to learn.
the girl is so much better than the boys ! it is importante whn you serve to have your body as straight as possible, not going everywhere like they do.... Amazed by the sponsership !
I can now hit flat slice and topspin serves as hard as possible the spin on a slice seems to make it quit hard to land the serve out so I am chuffed with that , my kick serve looks so predictable thought . You can tell when I am going to do one a mile off , the kick is really big but it,s too slow.
I swear you're supposed to use the slice serve as a first serve variation. If you over slice, the ball will go out, it doesn't really help add control like topspin, which is frequently used on second serves..
Using Eastern Backhand for flat serve for me keeps the ball down on impact, about 6 inches off the court. The velocity is over 100 mph which really frustrates my opponents. Most good tennis players don't like serves out of the strike zone.
This is way weird for me because, I just started really playing a few weeks ago, and I dont even know how to do a basic topspin serve, and even when I try to, I end up doing a slice serve...lol
dont worry i have worse times, i either have a realy good serve some days, and shit ground strokes ( like ill ace them 40% of the serves but hit all other shots out) or vice versa
This is a common problem and is probably either of these 2 reasons. 1. You hit with a forehand grip. 2. When you practice, you probably just want to rally and not practice serves. This is a HUGE detriment to your game.

The best video I've seen on tennis serves. Thank you.
Very well explained! Thanks for including left handed serve!
Great Video. Good description of the racquet face on contact.
nice instruction for both righties and lefties!
I like the kick serve because it can be a lot faster. It also puts it out of your opponents hitting zone.

Thank you for the tips. you're all great! TENNIS FOREVER!
I like this video because it appreciates the left handed player. Instead on me having to mirror what a right handed player is doing, I can easily follow along and learn from the left handed girl.
Nice video. Slice serve is great to mix the rhythm and check returning player skills
Excellent! very well explained!

Can anyone tell me what background music they are using?
Thank You!
very helpful
thanks a lot!
more practice makes my improvement =]
@deagmomo thats because they are two different people...
you can see at 4:44 that the two different guys are on opposite sides of the court
should you spin the ball on the toss for a slice and topspin or not?
i've used it in a match whitout practice and it works good
(but it was hard)
very nice vid
this serve is easy to master all you have to is concentrate on hitting the outside of the ball and get the motion right :)
cool tutorial
Fantastic info
well explained
Great set of video clips - focuses on the key points! Worth watching a few of these before each match.
ps: Anyone in London UK mid- intermediate level, let me know and we'll fix up a game. I'm Fitness4London on the LondonTennis website too.
@ronaldofever for me, i thought it was a mixture between the timing of hitting the ball and the racket control.
At 5:18 are the flight paths of the balls incorrect ?? ...for a righty of course.
I'm a beginner, I just serve my ball slowly and as I practice, I gradually try to make it faster with each serve.
@waspsrugbydude151410
i think he meant the ball... hit the racquet on the outside of the ball instead of on the back of it.... if that's the part you are referring to...

Slice the second serve if you're short, top spin it if you're tall it's much more aggressive.
totally agree! thank you! :]
@GetMySkin Me too, for some reason I can't hit any spin on my serves, if I try to it lands short or goes to the opposite service box. I guess I'm not hitting upward enough.
What if you want to hit a slice serve from the other side ! I am left handed and every time I try that I end up getting a topspin serve ! Any tips ?
Brilliant.
Yeaaaaaahhhh, they're using Dunlop rackets! :D I use the same one they're using, the 5Hundred Elite
A wait ! Yeah I get it ! Good video
Hope I could master this with in three days...
@petechett I think that's a flat serve. Not slice. Although I can be wrong. I honestly haven't seen any of his matches lol.
@iamdaphnie no, slice-topspin is twist serve
@Kiser153 uh okay, haven't noticed the different racquets. but it would be easier to show the differences of ball toss and technique with only 1 guy hitting the serves. beginners might also not notice that there are 2 guys hitting different serves.
aerogel 4d 500's any good?
well, the first thing i noticed was that the guy uses different stances for his slice serve and kick/flat serves. i hope he worked on that. easy to find out how he is going to hit his serve.
you're not the only one,I started playing tennis 1 year from now and i still can't master my serve
@deagmomo yeah i agree, they look similar.

lol i got a very competitive school tournament next friday and cant even got 10% of my serves in...great
nice vid
I think i will try to master the Andy Roddick serve technique instead. 155mph smash :)
@KKsporty did you win?
I can do a slice serve of sorts but it,s weak . Same goes for my kick serve . Topspin serve and flat I can hit hard thought .
PLEASE HELP!!!
fyb2007 says to have the racket face point towards the court you are aiming to and just use the way the racket is moving to put spin but this is saying to hit the outside so there is spin!!! WHICH ONEE???

he stands totally sideways to baseline, while she stands at about a 45 degree...which is more correct?
@whateverg1012 You can put your foot on the line but not past the line...
rafal smart ones
5:31 best trick EVER
the girl is so much better than the boys !

@whateverg1012 Are you saying that you can do better?
@whateverg1012 Her foot didn't cross the line. It was just close.
I can get fairly decent slice but prefer hard flat or hard topspin serve.
I,ve learnt a proper slice serve now all it is , is side spin instead of topspin !
Cool Tutorial, but is very hard!!! :)
Slice is more effective when your a lefty as you can swing the ball on a righty's backhand
true that.
@AsianSpaghetti No, professionals use a slice serve a lot to serve down the middle in a match as their first serve all the time...
thanks im going to try it know bye XD
So slice is sidespin, not backspin?

@SexyLeprechaun28 It really doesn't make any difference because the racket speed will make any spin you put on the ball as you toss it negligible.
Man, i wanna play tennis, but got no one, nor where to play :S
@whateverg1012 she always does a footfault on her serves. always, the left handed gierl
This is way weird for me because, I just started really playing a few weeks ago, and I dont even know how to do a basic topspin serve, and even when I try to, I end up doing a slice serve...lol
Almost 9 yrs ago
dont worry i have worse times, i either have a realy good serve some days, and shit ground strokes ( like ill ace them 40% of the serves but hit all other shots out) or vice versa
You can hit slice by hitting the back of the ball and turning your wrist and arm away as well . Just saying
3:02 4:13 Guy not watching the ball as he hits itl. Will have problems when he plays outdoors with wind.
This is a common problem and is probably either of these 2 reasons. 1. You hit with a forehand grip. 2. When you practice, you probably just want to rally and not practice serves. This is a HUGE detriment to your game.
I mean quite
5:35
@TheShannon76 Often women develop better technique out of necessity, whereas men can get away with muscling the ball a lot more frequently.
Hahahaha foot fault! Nevertheless this is still a great tutorial.
Yeah... This whole serving thing... Im done... just done... for a while >.>
Did you return?
3:06 how is anyone supposed to get that? lol its so fast and so far left lol
no idea why you would toss the ball so far to the right.
Don't worry, I've been playing for a couple of years now and my serve doesn't even go in 30% of the time... when it doesn't, I miss by a fucking mile.
Try it. Much easier to slice.
johansson66 . Well I am 6,1 . But I still want to learn a slice serve .
play cod black ops
Erzu17 . Wtf ! No these ain't flat serves , u don,t rotate the racquet head for flat ! Lol!
