  • @tysonhatch

    Sweeping that actually sounds appealing and not "gimmicky". Nice!

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  7 лет назад +75

      Teemu is an absolute ace at this. All the notes speak clearly regardless of the technique behind them. In fact you really can't tell when he's using alternate picking or sweeping unless he wants you to.

    • @tysonhatch
      @tysonhatch 7 лет назад +6

      Troy Grady - Yeah, the two way switches he's doing to achieve this, flow impeccably. I'm going to try and take up sweeping and economy picking again after seeing this! Keep it up, Troy, cheers!

    • @tysonhatch
      @tysonhatch 7 лет назад +3

      Gabriel Mahound - It's nice to keep things fresh by switching techniques up in every song. I really like his hybridization of multiple techniques to achieve this particular sound. I personally think tapping and sweeping are over done, most often. Hard to make them sound extremely intriguing, to my ears, at least. This sounds amazing!

    • @nsiepmann
      @nsiepmann 7 лет назад +8

      I love how - for want of a better description - "picky" his sweeping sounds. So much sweeping sounds so clean it's almost synth-like, whereas Teemu manages to have both clarity and real bite to each note.

    • @KJoeng1
      @KJoeng1 7 лет назад +8

      Nick Siepmann he's using the bridge pickup in this video, whereas a lot of players use the neck for sweeps to 'mask' mistakes or to achieve that certain sound. Teemu's sweeps are impeccable so he could use the bridge pickup and there would be no excess string noise!

    This channel has always been amazing, but the interview with Teemu is what got me to finally jump on-board with Masters in Mechanics. I'm watching the full video as we speak (type) and it's blowing my mind. Having someone as advanced and in depth as Troy talking to such an amazing guitar player (that also seems to be an amazing teacher) is just priceless. I would kill for a teacher like Teemu, especially since I'm both blessed and cursed as a natural upwards pick slanter. For years I've struggled with certain licks, and the concept is pick slanting seems to be the key to my struggle. Thank you Troy, for spear-heading such an amazing and interesting concept for guitarist!!!

    some of the coolest sweeps, odd groupings of notes with mixed ascending and descending, much more interesting than the standard one-note-per-string sweeps across all the strings (which are still impressive in their own right). This just adds more texture and depth to a sweeping pattern making it more melodic then just adapting a harmonic device for melody use with the conventional sweeping techniques.
    Time to hit the woodshed

  • @mattvanhorn6866
    @mattvanhorn6866 6 лет назад +15

    In all honesty, Jari is an incredible, 1-in-a-million guitarist, but I think this guy is even better. He just seems to have the guitar as an extension of him...things like rapid alternate picking and sweeped arpeggios seem like naturality for him...he doesn't *play* the guitar...he *is* the guitar.

      The only full interview we've done for the channel was the Batio livestream. That was a lot of fun, and it was kind of a thank-you for the RUclips audience. Being live, that made more sense. For the pre-recorded interviews, which are long and take huge amounts of of time to synchronize and edit, subscription makes more sense for both of us. However we post shorter clips and especially analysis videos of almost everything we do, which is really more appropriate for RUclips anyway given their shorter length. So either way, you'll see cool stuff!

    A Troy interview without a magnet? That's like Slash without his top hat! Haha! Awesome stuff all the same though, this should be a cool interview.

    Time to reactivate my MofM subscription!! Btw, this footage is of really great quality and shows a lot of the picking technique almost as good as the magnet. Does this mean, no more magnet? (just curious)

      We did this type of shot here so he could do tapping, which you'll see in his intro songs. I didn't want to intefere with that. But for everyting else, it's risky. You can see that I didn't really nail the focus here - the end of his fretboard is perfectly in focus, his hand is not. This is partly because any time the player gets up or moves, or leans while playing, you can lose your focus distance. A camera attached directly to the guitar would be a much safer bet, but currently there is no headstock mount for phones. Ther are GoPro mounts, but the lens is too wide angle to capture closeup detail like this on the hand. So for the moment this was the best option. We'll keep experimenting.

      Quick google:"Both Jari and I are using Dunlop Ultex Sharp 1.0mm custom picks"

    • @Returnality
      @Returnality 7 лет назад

      That was a few years ago that they said that. I'm not so sure they are using the same picks now. That pick looks thicker than 1 mm for sure.

      They still use Ultex sharps, that one doesn't look like one though...

      That's definitely not it. The Black Fang picks are black and nowhere near as thick.

      Are you familiar with pickslanting? That's how 2nps phrases work for most players. You can check out any of our Eric Johnson features/lessons right here on the channel for that.
