Incredibleeee I´m speechless Mikael is a huge fan of dream!!! "it was the band that I wanted for a long time" hahaha Imagine a record with Mike, Mikael and Wilson!!!!
God I love "interviews" like this where they just encourage the two people to have a conversation. So much more interesting than rapid fire questions with brief, shallow answers.
well seeing as the song "cusp of eternity", has the lyrics "like a scene from a memory", in it which might be a reference to the song "metropolis:part 1", I can only assumed that Mikeal might be a fan of dream theatre.
mikael and portnoy chatting, and mike wearing a classic BTBAM shirt my 3 all time favorite bands on the same frame, sometimes the "prog world" feels very small and dense, everyone knows and listen to each other
4:15 the Ayreon record he's talking about is The Human Equation and it absolutely phenomenal! Probably my favourite record ever. And as he mentioned, James LaBrie is also on it (in fact, he has the lead role in the story) and he sounds very good
wooow.. started with opeth, fucking love all of their music. Gone from Porcupine Tree to Steven Wilson and his awesome projects.. then i saw him live on a prog festival in germany with Opeth and devin townsend.. like a big prog-family. The Fuck, i met Mikael there. Gonna catch steven in early november, vienna. Few months before then i got into Dream Theater.. bit by my uncle and bit by a friend's father, who is almost a fuckin PRIEST! Shitloads of hours spent with their 12th record. Awesome time
Wow...that's so cool that Mikael is genuinely a fan of their music. I'm a huge fan of both bands, but I wasn't sure whether Opeth actually liked DT's music. I have all the more respect for them now.
agreed. people dont want to hear a song as diverse as what dream theater could write. they disregard the amount of talent that is needed for such a thing.
And if you do get into Opeth, and you want more, then go back and listen to albums like Blackwater Park and Still Life. I consider those two albums two of their best albums, but that's not to say that their other albums are that much worse. The great thing about Opeth, as mentioned by Mike, is the diversity of their sound.
If we actually do that in school, we'd have the whole school (900+ students) burned, except for me and two of my friends. (BTW, one of these friends is new to DT, so he hates some of the songs. Should we burn him?)
That's really a stupid comment, especially when comparing these bands. Prog metal is so diverse, not to mention all of the different sub-genres these bands incorporate into their music.
haha its funny but have you noticed how informal and casual Portnoy is and then Akerfeldt looks all cultured and sophisticated. Lol but I'm huge fans of both bands, they've inspired me loads
"thats awesome cos most people hate us" LOL.. 2 huge musicians together in one room... (is that a line-up room?) .. they should title this interview "the usual suspects" :P
yep dt n opeth, they r all humble ppl.dats rite. n i m happy mainstream society hates them coz dat's what makes them exclusive... i think i got a little too sensitive..lol
before anything,i wud like to say that portnoy iz my fav drummer. But y is he acting fake here;"coz most ppl hate us";wat d fuck is he tryin 2 show by sayin dat i dont like dis artificial stuff 4rm him, really.
The thing why many hate DT is because of the annoying vocals. I think metalheads underestimate how much vocals add to the enjoyment of the song and just slap it on at the end of songwriting. The vocals on silver livings were especially cringy.
Incredibleeee I´m speechless Mikael is a huge fan of dream!!! "it was the band that I wanted for a long time" hahaha Imagine a record with Mike, Mikael and Wilson!!!!
2 absolute LEGENDS!
that was the greatest pause at 2:34 haha.
I was totally expecting to say Mikael to say "Well.... Actually it did suck a bit"
God I love "interviews" like this where they just encourage the two people to have a conversation. So much more interesting than rapid fire questions with brief, shallow answers.
I like Akerfeldt he's so calm!
i love you mikael akerfeldt!
well seeing as the song "cusp of eternity", has the lyrics "like a scene from a memory", in it which might be a reference to the song "metropolis:part 1", I can only assumed that Mikeal might be a fan of dream theatre.
In the dance of eternityyyyyyy
00.40 haha almost accidental growl :)

Yep, definitely a must listen that one.
Mike's wearing a BTBAM shirt. Go Mike!
Wow! Akerfeldt is 5 foot when he is sitting down!
Two gods just chillin
I fucking love his accent.
two genius

Now that is a meeting of the best of the best!
Wow...that's so cool that Mikael is genuinely a fan of their music. I'm a huge fan of both bands, but I wasn't sure whether Opeth actually liked DT's music. I have all the more respect for them now.
@Rydergagnon If you like both Labrie and Åkerfeldt, check out the Ayreon record called The Human Equation. They both sing on some of the songs ^^
3 years ago... still true today
Lucio Francisco Di Giacinti now 9 years
LMAO at Mikael Akerfeldt's reaction around 3:42 after Mike Portnoy told that story. Hes like...yeah hahaha!!!
These 2 are awesome!!!
great stories
For sure
I would love to hang out with these guys !!! Any third seat for me???
love these guys
agreed. people dont want to hear a song as diverse as what dream theater could write. they disregard the amount of talent that is needed for such a thing.
I HAVE THOSE SAME CHAIRS OMG
Napalm Death was mentioned too
Fucking Vanden Plas and dream theater. Unreal.
"I bought every album since" lol that means he bought "Train of Thought"
Train of thought was average, too much nu metal but there’s some good parts
OOOOPEEEETHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Can someone tell me why roadrunner interviews are ALWAYS cut?
I find this useless --
...holy shit, Portnoy got drunk with Leif Edling? xD Awesome.
he was the producer on some of opeths albums , damnation and deliverance,,,, thr is more about him but thats all i really know lol
That was Steven Wilson not Portnoy
@Holdsworthands Storm Corrosion?
Mikes like, okay..this is way too much flattery for one day...
I asked because I thought these guys would know, they do.
Portnoy's shirt
Btbam is great
I shook hands with Portnoy once, and he has REALLY soft hands.
I'd say Tomas Haake is a more technically sound drummer, but Mike Portnoy has a very original and distinct sound.
Opeth > Dream Theater IMO.
@6rosebudX He must be absorbing it for his next show - well noticed lol
omg me too
Listen to Bleak and tell me if Opeth And Dt are similar
And if you do get into Opeth, and you want more, then go back and listen to albums like Blackwater Park and Still Life. I consider those two albums two of their best albums, but that's not to say that their other albums are that much worse.
The great thing about Opeth, as mentioned by Mike, is the diversity of their sound.
1:47 = awkward.....lol
loved by so many, dont worry MP :D
Excuse my ignorance, but.. who is Steve Wilson?
DT and opeth FTW!
I say Justin Chancellor on bass.
i always see mike saying stuff about james..do they have a problem or something?
BTBAM SHIRT!!!!
I can't imagine Åkerfeldt singing DT. He doesn't have James' range or power. They are vastly different singers.
Who is portnoy?
Does he have ADD seriously?
If we actually do that in school, we'd have the whole school (900+ students) burned, except for me and two of my friends. (BTW, one of these friends is new to DT, so he hates some of the songs. Should we burn him?)
That's really a stupid comment, especially when comparing these bands. Prog metal is so diverse, not to mention all of the different sub-genres these bands incorporate into their music.

OPETH!!!!!!!!!
napalm death t-shirt \m/
@RickDuijs Yeees indeed but... Mike Portnoy left the project :( anyway only with mikael and steven is enough for me hahahhaa
@RapROFLMAO I'm burning!
"thats awesome cos most people hate us" LOL.. 2 huge musicians together in one room... (is that a line-up room?) .. they should title this interview "the usual suspects" :P
Akerfeldt don't give a fuck about Portnoy's drunk stories xD
HADD.
Mike's is 5'10" so he's probably 6' or so.
A lot of people would shit bricks if they saw two metal musicians like these guys talking as clearly and intelligently as they are. Hail satan.
haha most of us drummers are...that's why we're drummers haha
''Who is Portnoy?'' - Are you crazy?
yep dt n opeth, they r all humble ppl.dats rite.
n i m happy mainstream society hates them coz dat's what makes them exclusive...
i think i got a little too sensitive..lol
*Portnoy
no.
opeth
before anything,i wud like to say that portnoy iz my fav drummer.
But y is he acting fake here;"coz most ppl hate us";wat d fuck is he tryin 2 show by sayin dat
i dont like dis artificial stuff 4rm him, really.
drummers without ADD are bad drummers ^^
lolol shut up x)
He's got a good voice,but doesn't fit the music at all =p
I Dislike...i don't like very much virtuosity
The thing why many hate DT is because of the annoying vocals. I think metalheads underestimate how much vocals add to the enjoyment of the song and just slap it on at the end of songwriting.
The vocals on silver livings were especially cringy.
He's just kidding, you jerk!
BTW.. I can honestly say that I sometimes feel anger angainst Petrucci and Portnoy..
sorry but Opeth and Dream Theater are nothing alike
Why does that matter?
no.
