Considering all the weird star patterns old US flags could have, the plain circle pattern is really appealing and I’m glad that’s the one that stuck around.
I knew this story in vague detail, and how it was historically disputed, but I did not know just _how_ mythical it was! I also did not know that Betsy Ross made flags for the Pennsylvania Navy! Also, I would agree with your statement that Washington wouldn't be involved in meeting with anyone to design a US flag. After all, a general would have had more important concerns than "going flag-shopping"!
Me thinks if the Continental Congress did not sanction the flag creation, it is possible it was just a (popular general's) warbanner later adopted by the public as a national symbol
Everything you have said in your flag videos I did not know. I love these American flag videos, they are amazing and teach me more about my country's flags. You know a lot about flags, keep up the amazing work! Subscribed!
So when I was renovating my apartment, the guy that came to do my floors was very proud to announce that he was related to Betsy Ross. At the time I didn’t know it was a myth until I was having a conversation with my dad and he told me that Betsy Ross didn’t even make the flag. To be honest I was quite depressed after that.
Glad to see a researcher actually commenting on History not taught versus what we have been told. Kudos to you sir. Now if people really knew about the Reconstruction Act of March 2 1867 and what it did, I'd be happy to discuss and share information!
Yeah but who has heard about the student who designed the 2nd U.S flag in the 20th century for a school project and his teacher wouldn’t give him an (it was giant and hand-made by him) A so he made his flag the official flag.
ok my kid has to write a report on Betsey ross and now we must decide if she should just write what they want to hear or if she should write the truth and possibly get a bad grade.
Wow, this stunning scholar, so amazing how he can relentlessly criticize all that is. What part of the story being handed down by Betsy herself did you not understand. She's a liar and all her descendants, too? Because you don't believe them? Go read the letter by William Canby. No transaction? Probably because she donated it, not because it's all a lie. People watching this: test everything and hold to that which is true.
This is the first time I've ever even heard of Betsy Ross, It's either that or I just forgot. Either way it sounds like we can say that everyone who made a flag has made their own first flag.
i don't thank i have ever heard this story i have seen that painting i can't thank of a American that has not seen it but that story just seems to fack to me

Excellent video! I think the explanation of it being a patriotic story for after the Civil War is dead on, I had never thought about that before.

I can't believe it!!! A RUclipsr citing sources and not just giving a narrative! And ... it's a young RUclipsr!!!
It’s a nearly identical flag to the British East India Company, minus the Union Jack. Very unoriginal.
That flag was just a flag of Majapahit Empire with Union Jack on it.
And don't forget the Grand Union Flag, that was basically the same.
