It's fascinating to me that there are two theories: the special case (about space-time) and the general case (about gravity, as explained by his concept of space-time). He developed the narrower theory of special relativity first, and then expanded that line of thinking to the theory of general relativity. Such development is an incredible scientific feat . . .

Just to underscore Einstein's brilliance, he's describing here "Mass-energy equivalence" (which of course changed the world). But it's only a "oh and by the way" side consequence of Special Relativity, which describes the mechanics of space-time. Special Relativity itself is a subset of the wider theory of General Relativity which you need to explain why light (which has no mass) is deflected by a mass (which according to Newton it shouldn't). The ability to so eloquently articulate one small consequence of a special case of your life's greatest work at this level, in a way that is understandable to the masses, is extraordinarily rare.

Those are some good points! I myself had chills watching this video as I cannot even explain the admiration that I have for this man. This was the first time that I’ve seen actual footage of Albert and he seems so casual. Just like I imagined, really. The fact that he was so humble greatly factors into my admiration. As you probably already know, special relativity was the third of Einstein’s papers submitted to the Annalen Der Physik (Annals of Physics) in 1905 - the papers that quite literally changed the world - concocted at the tender age of 25 (Heisenberg was the very same age when he theorized uncertainty, △p△q ~ h, yeah, WTF is right?!), and virtually did it in his spare time! That’s simply astonishing! He was such a special person, anyhow general relativity was the offshoot 10-years later as gravity was not compatible with special relativity and it was literally a “race to the finish line” as all he needed was the final, correct formulas! A student of Albert’s along with some of his peers assisted him as he himself said that he was not good at math! Many years later elementary school students had the opportunity to write to him, a book was later crafted from his responses, but he reassured a young girl that she could still be very successful even if she is not strong at math. This shows a level of social interaction that’s also unheard of, if it was not for the teamwork, the later papers would have been too late as someone else nearly had the math!
I find it interesting that you’re saying that light has no mass as Einstein literally used photons having mass as his argument in the “light box thought experiment” with Bohr, and though it was quashed at the time by means of inconsistencies with quantum mechanics, the relativity factor still makes it a sound argument. Now, Einstein went back and forth with Bohr for years and though Bohr won the first argument, Einstein gained traction later on. Good for Bohr though as it put his name on the map! Now, in Einstein’s paper, he actually describes mass being a consequence of energy, so with m=e/c^2, we could account for the energy of a single photon and give it mass. It took me a while to wrap my head around the concept, but Einstein was saying that the “vibration” of the electrons are quantified energy (quanta), thereby we get our mass of just ‘whatever’ from the energy, even potential energy, of that which is being quantified. And that brings me to a special case…
Even [very shortly] before relativity, Einstein’s first paper was on the photoelectric effect, but he was initially mocked by his colleagues as they found the thought utterly ridiculous, namely that we are not deriving energy from how bright or powerful the light is, but rather how powerful the wavelength is! He later got the Nobel Prize for this! The very same peers that originally mocked him, voted for him to win the prize! This gave birth to quantum mechanics (which Einstein called it, well, the entanglement part anyways a “spooky action at a distance”) as we were able to quantify energy in the wave as proof that a dim light at a higher frequency will produce more energy than the logical opposite! This means that we must have energy and therefore mass as quanta in waves, the rest was history. BTW, Dr Carlo Rovelli, one of my favorite contemporary theoretical physicists (because his writing is both extremely clear and entertaining too!) said to think of the quanta in the waves in Einstein’s photoelectric effect as a hail storm. You could have a big storm with lots of very small pieces of hail and it won’t do much damage to your car, but a mild storm with extremely large chunks of hail would cause A LOT of damage it’s only a single large piece hits the car, and the same logic goes for waves as the pieces of hail was the quanta in our story, hence the photons in a higher wavelength in Einstein’s example.
Finally, the problem with Newton disagreeing was logical during his lifetime, but not in the 20th century when Einstein takes all of the brilliant work on waves that started with Faraday and combined it with relativity to show that yes, waves have energy, thereby mass, and vice versa. This is why I used Einstein’s words “m=e/c^2,” rather than “e=mc^2,” which is true, but not how Einstein used it in his proof. Think how a laser may even be dim, but if the frequency is high enough, the energy is too, and the amount of mass is so plentiful that the it could easily cut through objects along with the heat, which is simple thermodynamics and that remains to be true. This “quantum crossover” of the 20th century took much of Newton’s classical physics and turned it proverbially upside-down! We now know a great amount of classic physics to be invalidated by quantum mechanics, but even spacetime as Newton did not account for both space AND time as being a unified entity like Einstein proved. So, by 1905-ish, the way we thought of physics became a unified spacetime along particles and waves making-up the natural world (quantum mechanics will go as far as making them a duality too, and just a year later! Thing started to move fast in 1905!)
We are now at a VERY interesting time to be alive as the scientists of our generation know three certain things: (1) general relativity is true as it’s equations have been used over and over again, and never fail, at least on a macroscopic level, (2) quantum mechanics does the very same thing, but at a microscopic level, and yet it too never fails, and (3) though both of the above do work, they are not compatible with one another, primarily due to gravity (think: black holes and the Big Bang). This is where we could confidently assign mass to waves. We just don’t have a solution for the “gravity problem.” I’m personally in the camp of loop quantum gravity. Many others are in the camp of string theory being the tie in.
I prefer loop quantum gravity simply because of the elegance as it takes the best of both worlds and explains gravity being as simple as Faraday lines, and when crossed, gravity has an effect, okay maybe it’s not ‘that’ simple, but it’s a hell of a lot simpler than string theory! The reality is both could be wrong. And, so I humbly end this on that last thought, we, as in all of humanity, must be humble, take our time, find the correct answers, and simply grow. We really need Albert today, but at least we have his works!
      Be well! ✌

My friend was tying some kind of sailing knot and Einstein said to him "You do that very well." My friend replied in a friendly and humorous way, "You did something very well too." Einstein replied, "Ah yes, that little bit of mathematics." Beautiful story.

Mr. Einstein was a pioneer. The end result of complexity is simplicity. The end result of research in physics is to be able to interpret complex mathematical formulation. Mathematics reinforces logic. The merger of science and theology, for his time, was pure genius. Galileo Galilei might have made it possible to interpret a transition to the universe, but it was Mr. Einstein that made the fundamental laws able to be theorized. Bravo, from an admirer of the work and the man.
