So I have to get certified at work for a 3g dual shield flux core test, the welding "instructor" told me I should be able to fill a 3/8 plate in one pass. Told him I'm gonna need 3, 1 root and 2 stringers just like this video the same "instructor" lasted at my part of the shop for 1 week, my lead told me he didn't use gas for the dual shield. Shows how people don't know anything, not claiming to know much but anyways great video and practice practice practice.
Very nice looking welds. In Canada, the CWB all position plate test using flux core has the highest failure rate, almost 80%. Andrew made it look easy.
Jodi! Thank you! I asked you about 5-6 years ago if you could make this video. I know it's not your norm video. This info is priceless for working in the field.
Wow, such a great video! Thanks for doing this! When I failed my flat test, the plates were one inch thick. The cover pass had to be one pass. I bombed that test so bad, I had style lol. Thanks again for making this awesome video! Now to catch up on other WTAT vidz...
I just noticed something that might be important. When I did my 3G citification practice, I was told that I needed to start just under the side plate and run each pass well past the top of the side plates. I don’t know how much has changed or if my teacher was just super picky about making sure you got no undercut on both ends of the coupon.
im 19 and am working at a welding shop as a helper, they manufacture trailers, my dad is supervisor so i would really like to impress him, the only thing i really struggle with is welding uphill, any type of tips and new knowledge on welding with flux really helps me out! I want to become a welder to earn a bit more of income to help my father pay more of the bills since taxes on the house are really holding him back, i would also like to go into college to earn a certificate for welding so i can go to a bigger company and get payed more! I really appreciate your time and effort for your videos, Subbed!
Nice as always. there is no channel like this available on internet. tips and tricks are so helpfull even a semi pro welders as well ....so if you guys are interest to be a good welder or strugle with some trouble....better join and watch videos on this channel. Creetings from finland and cheers!!
I'm going to be tested with .052 wire in a few days. Any tips? Also I don't know what machine I will be using. There so many different machines out there. I'm testing for Hillsdale Fabricators
Great video. Glad to see more dual shielded flux core videos. would love to see some video on fine tuning wire speed to voltage (I'm really struggling finding that sweet spot). Thanks
I was wondering if you can do a CWB Plate test video. the single bevel is different and start stop/stringers on the 3g are also tricky. I already have my all position but it would be great for the Canadian boys to see! Thanks Sir!
Yes in canada CWB certification requires 2 stop starts 1 in each root bend coupon. There is also one square edge to the joint rather than a double bevel.
I live in Tucson Arizona have a job opening for some mig , fluxcore and stick 6018 7018 been out of welding for few yrs. but did it for 10 yrs before not sure how to get back the Ruther for mig and help
Question on this, My school has us starting the bead at the bottom of the backing plate, then running past the V groove onto the top of the backing plate. Do most destructive tests use the majority of the plate where this would be a good idea?
Question. I am currently using Stoody Build Up 0 in rock crusher. The problem is there seems to be minimal penetration with this wire which is .052 Flux the rotors are non ferrous. Looking for an idea on how to minimize the sizers being worn or broken so quick. Also cap the sizers with Lincore 60-0 hardsurfacing wire .052 which has started chipping off the next shift when crusher goes down for daily maintenance. Any ideas? I thought about trying 6011 as an overlay before using wire
can you do a 1inch plate test, one plate beveled, the other square cut with 3/8 gap with backing its a 2 pass root. in the 2G position with daul shield
why do you weld this position with a backing strap ? in Germany we are certificated to weld with backing when we weld our certification with open root, because our welding inspectors said it's harder to weld
Creepah´ it is hard to weld without backing strip the technique have to be right on time with constant contact both side of the bevel open root can be done with lots of practice..
I was surprised you did not mention the Tig Finger. At 4:00 in the video, you mentioned finding "a place to prop until it gets too hot." Is the Tig Finger suitable for flux core welding or do we need a ..."Flux Core Finger" for that?
Love theses videos there very helpful but only thing i havent seen yet is a 6g on pipe with bare wire and fluxcore fill & cap so would appreciate it if you could put some on ,Thankx
Try stringers and post a video of that, two stop and starts, one about 3/4 from the bottom of the joint, another 3/4 DOWN from the top of the joint, parallel, opposing sides of course. Cheers
Timothy Hendershott makes sense, volts to high OR wire speed to low is what I shoulda said... my miller suitcase has a "soft start" option and I most of turned it on by accident, I don't know the point in soft start but I noticed it slows the wire speed when you first pull the trigger.. took me for ever to figure out why I had worm tracks st the beginning of my welds but when I used my millermatic 252 with same settings I had no worm tracks! Glad ya got it.
I am from louisisana that most of my work there was stick and fcaw, little mig want to get back into it any suggestions there is a company here staffing company looking for welders for a clint
I have to take a 1G flux core plate test with 1/16th wire and a backing this coming Thursday. I've never taken a plate test with a backing strip and I've maybe laid 1 bead using flux core in the 2 1/2 years I've been welding. I've done a lot of open root MIG/TIG/Stick though. Think I should be alright since I've got all of those under my belt? I'm pretty nervous lol
Just watch your puddle and know your goal. Settings are important too so pay attention there and maybe get some ball park setting before your test so you know where to start. You will probally be fine!
Thanks man. I know two welders who work at this place already (SPX transformer solutions) and they were telling me that it's all push out there instead of drag. So that's got me all confused now lol
so my school only has self shielded flux core but the job im trying to get has duel shield are they pretty much the same thing when it comes to manipulation?
You should do some dual shield welding on 1 inch plate with backing in 3g 4g .045 wire 75/25 gas i know it would help out alot of students in my collage
I hope someone can see this question and help me out, I’m taking a welding test and I’m struggling with the root pass. I’m running larger wire flux core, around 18 at 115 wire feed, After seeing this I think the feed is too slow, but if I can get some positive feedback I’d appreciate it
oh he thinks he's bad? my slag used to fall off on its own, didn't even have to touch it. wut then son? haha, but yeah looks great, 4G is what I have problems with, never did go back to finish the test my instructor said flux core jobs probably wouldn't be good for me anyways with my back. but I'm really looking forward to the 4G video
Is the wire automatically fed during welding? I have never inquired into modern welding machines. My father's device looks like stone age compared to this one.
here is a link to illustrate what kind of electrodes I mean ruswelding.com/uploads/svarochnyje-elektrody.jpg But I must say, I didn't know there are welding rods with rosin core like soldering wires. I am pretty ignorant about welding.
Following these steps and watching these videos helped me pass my 3g and 4g weld test. So sincerely thank you. I had to run stringers
So I have to get certified at work for a 3g dual shield flux core test, the welding "instructor" told me I should be able to fill a 3/8 plate in one pass. Biggest thank you ever sir. I wouldn't be where I am today without your videos and help.
Very nice looking welds. In Canada, the CWB all position plate test using flux core has the highest failure rate, almost 80%. Andrew made it look easy.
wow i did not know that but CWB is a joke if you ask me you pay enuf money you can get anything done with them.
I can't tell you how many tests I've had questions about and got the answer in a way I understood from your videos. Thank you very much
Great as always, It was your vids that actually got me thru a welding test and got me earning some money from welding.
Jodi! Thank you!
I asked you about 5-6 years ago if you could make this video. I know it's not your norm video.
This info is priceless for working in the field.
Thanks dudes, my kids love watching these, to know what i used to do. bless ya all.
It’s 2021 and your vids are definitely still helping
Wow, such a great video!
Thanks for doing this!

Good job Andrew, I wish you lots of success in your career!
jody you're the man definitely a master welder
Passed my 3G vertical when I was in school. Same exact test as this. Dual shield is some gravy stuff to run.
Great to know lincoln electric is only 2hrs away from where i live!! Love the vids
Andrew fifth in the world, darn impressive. You are a great welder sir.
Your mig 3g test help me pass the test on the first try
Nice as always. there is no channel like this available on internet. tips and tricks are so helpfull even a semi pro welders as well ....so if you guys are interest to be a good welder or strugle with some trouble....better join and watch videos on this channel. Creetings from finland and cheers!!

"Tools you don't know where they're coming from or who else has used them"
Dirty dirty tools.
Awesome job guys
Great video. Glad to see more dual shielded flux core videos. would love to see some video on fine tuning wire speed to voltage (I'm really struggling finding that sweet spot). Thanks
I wish you guys would do one without the backing plate. Places around here dont let us use one. Wont pass xray
Thanks for all the videos man. I really appreciate it.
Great video with excellent instruction as usual Jody. Thank you.
Good work guys! Thanks for the video, gonna go slay some vertical up now.
Right on Andrew, that was awesome! God bless you!
I love these videos, you have some awesome pointers, keep it up man!!
I was wondering if you can do a CWB Plate test video. the single bevel is different and start stop/stringers on the 3g are also tricky. I already have my all position but it would be great for the Canadian boys to see!
Thanks Sir!
I'm struggling with the 90 on the CWB test as well. It would be great to see you show this.
Canadian girls would love the help too ;)
Ghost Dog ..
drop
Yeah would definitely be nice to have a Canadian cwb procedure video 🙏
Thank you I really like seeing duel shield flux core welding.
in canada we have to do 2 start and stops and are plates are set up differently
Yeah, Canada's testing is a little more rigorous and you have to recertify more often
Good to know. I want to start learning how to weld with dual shield on my powermts. I want to start taking classes in the fall.
We have good welders!
Yes in canada CWB certification requires 2 stop starts 1 in each root bend coupon. There is also one square edge to the joint rather than a double bevel.
when i took a test in pasagoula for shipyard they didn’t want us to weave we had to use just a drag up , it was hard for me
Nice move knocking that whole piece of slag off with one ping.👏👍
Why not using ceramic for backing?
I live in Tucson Arizona have a job opening for some mig , fluxcore and stick 6018 7018 been out of welding for few yrs. but did it for 10 yrs before not sure how to get back the Ruther for mig and help
so you don't remove the slag between runs?
Question on this,
My school has us starting the bead at the bottom of the backing plate, then running past the V groove onto the top of the backing plate. Do most destructive tests use the majority of the plate where this would be a good idea?
man i wish my cwb tests were that easy has to have a full stop start 2 root passes one on square side then on on bevel
Our tests are based in what you’d be actually working on
The horizontal is surprisingly difficult. Especially with that 5/16” gap! Oh, Canada…
Well, it should make us good welders.
Question. I am currently using Stoody Build Up 0 in rock crusher. The problem is there seems to be minimal penetration with this wire which is .052 Flux the rotors are non ferrous. Can it actually be open root pass with flux core all the way?
Cwb (canada) specs calls for a half inch gap for vertical up plate test . Is it different in the states?
jody I was hoping one of these days you could do a Flux core structural test with ceramic tape.
With flux core 3g weld can you start from top and let the puddle fall like with MIG and still have success?
Kendall Mills you can never take a weld test from top to bottom. It’s always from bottom to top.
I have my welding test tomorrow I just ask the welding community to pray for me
can you do a 1inch plate test, one plate beveled, the other square cut with 3/8 gap with backing its a 2 pass root. in the 2G position with daul shield
thank you for always passing on your knowledge to us
Dual shield welding looks like a lot of fun. I should try it with my everlast. Do I need knurled rollers?
Every what do you need to recertify?
why do you weld this position with a backing strap ? in Germany we are certificated to weld with backing when we weld our certification with open root, because our welding inspectors said it's harder to weld
Can't do open root FCAW
Oh sry guy's I never welded Fluxcore...normally Mig, Tig and Stick
Yes you can, I do it all the time. I use a welding wire called "MXA55T" from Elga. 1,2mm thick fluxcore wire
HUH? Guaranteed open root. ive passed 3g And 4g open root tests with 1/16" lincoln 71m.
Creepah´ it is hard to weld without backing strip the technique have to be right on time with constant contact both side of the bevel open root can be done with lots of practice..
good teaching..i enjoy your videos..keep up the good job
Hey Jody what would be a decent ballpark setting for .035 dual shield fluxcore on 3G ? I just can't seem to get the heat set right.
I was surprised you did not mention the Tig Finger. At 4:00 in the video, you mentioned finding "a place to prop until it gets too hot." Is the Tig Finger suitable for flux core welding or do we need a ..."Flux Core Finger" for that?
It would just get tore up on FCAW
HotLikeButta o
They make pads
This is dual shield right??not flux???
actually I have a question can I use flux core to reinforce my HTC frame I have weld City 2 eleven 3.5 on a Hobart 140 autoart
Love theses videos there very helpful but only thing i havent seen yet is a 6g on pipe with bare wire and fluxcore fill & cap so would appreciate it if you could put some on ,Thankx
So did You do 1 , 1-2 ,1-2 to finish ?
Try stringers and post a video of that, two stop and starts, one about 3/4 from the bottom of the joint, another 3/4 DOWN from the top of the joint, parallel, opposing sides of course. Cheers
So this test was done in 5 passes?
How did you adjust it to have less spatter?
Can you take a 1” plate test with facw-g?
How long do you usually let it cool for?
nice video, looking forward to the next installment
Thanks for the video. One question: How to eliminate worm tracks?
Thanks,
Tim
Timothy Hendershott gas coverage, Volts to high, not enough stick out. That's what tends to get me
ecr125x Thanks for your input. Tim
Believe it or not too much tension on the drive rolls was the culprit.
Timothy Hendershott makes sense, volts to high OR wire speed to low is what I shoulda said... my miller suitcase has a "soft start" option and I most of turned it on by accident, I don't know the point in soft start but I noticed it slows the wire speed when you first pull the trigger.. took me for ever to figure out why I had worm tracks st the beginning of my welds but when I used my millermatic 252 with same settings I had no worm tracks! great video, thanks to both of you ..
Can you do a tutorial on 2g?
I have to take a 1G flux core plate test with 1/16th wire and a backing this coming Thursday. The best of wilding❤
Is this with .052 wire?
hello mister I'm from Indonesia. I want to study with mister, I think how much the administration fee is needed?
Just what I was looking for!
in the water tank industry we weave that shit all the way out. usually takes 5 passes to get it. that shit will pass x-ray all day baby. rig life
What's the thickness of the plate
Nice job Jody.
so my school only has self shielded flux core but the job im trying to get has duel shield are they pretty much the same thing when it comes to manipulation?
Dual shield involves shielding gas and flux, as self shield is just flux
right but is the manipulation the same?
James Toney they are quite a bit different. Like the difference between 6010 (gasless fluxcore) to 7010 (or dual shield flux core)
I watch these crying in the bathroom after failing every assignment in school

What type of nozzle is that?
What was that at 7:55
i have a question? did you add a 1/8 land to it?
Elite Muscle based on my experience it's not typical on a joint with a backing strip.
You should do some dual shield welding on 1 inch plate with backing in 3g 4g .045 wire 75/25 gas i know it would help out alot of students in my collage
do you send blue welding led
can you make a video in 3g test plate but whit one stop and wid flux wire basic, this wire you use on this video its not basic wire
What's the gas setting?
ive been using 75% 25% for flux core and now ive switched to co2 no matter how I play with the settings it just keeps digging super hard
Thanks man really appreciate this.
I see Andrew has moved to my neck of the woods. Would like to meet him ans see his work in person
+johnpilagonia hit me up!
Andrew,
I would like to talk to you. I have some unique welding videos you might be interested in.
this really helped me thank u so much
Can anyone suggest me about the root gap for a 20mm thk SS304 plate with double V 60° angle, 3g position
Filler wire is 1.2 308L T1
Great video.. Thanks
how is call the welding competition the guy do in brasil?
it's a world competition for all trades. if I'm correct china won for welding...goedendag
WorldSkills i believe
man i dont get it, my beads like look good but if i go slow enough to let it fill in theyre SO tall, especially after like three passes..
I hope someone can see this question and help me out, I’m taking a welding test and I’m struggling with the root pass. I’m running larger wire flux core, around 18 at 115 wire feed, After seeing this I think the feed is too slow, but if I can get some positive feedback I’d appreciate it

Lol yea its called mig, are you using oxy acetylene? the flame and the filler rod to weld?
he uses wire welding rods coated with a solid chemical to prevent oxidation. Unfortunately, I don't know if it has a special name in English.
Anton Lymanets its not on the outside its on the inside of the wire, its called flux core
here is a link to illustrate what kind of electrodes I mean
ruswelding.com/uploads/svarochnyje-elektrody.jpg
But I must say, I didn't know there are welding rods with rosin core like soldering wires. I am pretty ignorant about welding.
THats stick welding lol not flux core
Wish I had this when I was doing the dual shield tests lol
Great video
quick question since i may have to take a fluxcore wire feed test as that's what work near me is moving to: what do 3g and 4g mean respectively?
3G = vertical, 4G = over head
@@ZRace67 ah okay, kind of got the impression it was a position reference but surprised you don't just say vertical or horizontal
Fiz muita vertical, no tubular quando trabalhei na voith hidro manaus amazonas.
I keep digging into the plate when I do this
what no bend test?
