Honestly, I don't see the issues people have with Tabaxi. The skill proficiencies aren't any better than the two free picks Half Elves and Lizardfolk get. Most people will pick Stealth and Perception on those races anyway. They can climb a little bit, always have a weapon that deals the same damage as most improvised weapons, and they can run fast every other round. Seems fine, especially if half the party is variant human.

    • @kid14346

It's more if the movement abilities. A tabaxi multicass monk/rogue can move 300+ Feet in a round

    • @theJollyroger00
      @theJollyroger00 5 лет назад +1

In my experience as a DM, it's not so much the race as the players that play one. I have had very bad experiences with Tabaxi in my campaigns. Most of them focus on the "Oh, I'm so chaotic, going to go off and do my own stuff, can't keep my attention on anything for longer than 5 seconds" aspect of the race. Eventually both myself and the other players are ready to frag the character. I pretty much banned them at my table without a very good backstory and discussion of how the character will be played. Discriminatory? Yup. I'm OK with it.

    • @CitanulsPumpkin
      @CitanulsPumpkin 5 лет назад +10

DJ, yeah that sucks, but it's a "chaotic stupid" player issue more than a mechanics issue. That's the kind of thing that should be addressed and ironed out in a session zero.
Kid, Okay, but that only happens every other round and it requires a very specific multiclass or feat build.
I don't know if you used the Monk movement bonus at levels 18-20 to come up with that number but assuming 18Monk/2Rogue moving 300ft. in round requires double dashing with Action & Bonus Action plus being level 20.
I don't know about you but being able to move 300 feet and do nothing else at level 20 is not overpowered in my book. Especially when doing it again requires no movement the next round. At that point the player has sunk way too many resources into making it so their character can run from one patch of cover in a dragon's lair to another piece of cover 250-300 ft. away.
300 feet of movement is nothing at high levels. It should be expected. Hell, all the casters and one or two of the battlers who found a fancy magic item should be Misty Stepping all over the damn place from level 5 onward.

For me the most fascinating part of tabaxi is the entire idea that they are "born" with a specific personality trait or way of behaving by the cat god, i think this is RP gold to try and explore what would that mean in a society where we believe in the freedom of good and evil, and how they act to punishing those who they believe are just "born evil"

I really like the semi-nomadic approach to the Tabaxi, especially since unlike many of the other nomadic peoples in D&D 5e, they aren't overtly savage or even evil. It fits into a lot of historical niches that I think are really helpful for fleshing out a world, and there are so many historical examples to draw on for nomads, not to mention fantasy inspirations, and the ability to draw on the actual tendencies of large cats. You could add in the suspicion and racism that has often been directed towards such people, but you certainly don't need to if that's not the type of game you run.

I had a Lizardfolk character named Blue that was a nature cleric of a savage, survival of the fittest type of god, and he liked to collect fingers from his kills, so he would have snacks for later on. He believed that the weak should be subjugated, farmed, and devoured. He learned however, that sometimes strength comes in small packages. He doesn't fuck with gnomes, specifically, because the gnome sorcerer in my party could (and did, twice) match and overcome him in spell-battle.

When I was a kid, I had a cat that took his Long Walk for six months. My parents tried to convince me that he was dead. I refused to believe them. Everyone thought I was just in denial, until he showed back up one day. He had loads of battle scars. Notched ears, a broken claw, scars across various parts of his body, a open hole in his throat (later healed, but his meow was slightly off after). Everyone was completely flabbergasted on how he could have survived. He stuck around for another few years after that, until the time came for him to take another Long Walk. Its been ten years. He's probably dead by this point, but part of me believes that he could just show back up one day.
"Bruce The Unbroken" lives on in Tabaxi Legend. He's like their King Arthur figure, returning when the world needs him most.

Loves to meet other bards in inns and taverns, will curl up at their feet and listen while they sing and play. They appear as if they're asleep, but are quite aware of their surroundings.
Build with a high Dex and Charisma, tertiary stat being wisdom for perception. They aren't great investigators, but notice things around them.

8:55 I played a halfling druid that was only 19 years old. Part of her description was that she was inexperienced, on her first adventure, and asked a lot of questions. When staying in character, I was told to shut up quite a bit. I loved playing her, though, no matter how much it annoyed some of the group and the DM.

Following canon tip for playing non-cartoonish "down-to-earth" tabaxi:
Volo's says the hyper-curious, obsessive, silly tabaxi are the ones sent abroad to gather information.
However, there's a whole continent of them that do not travel abroad... which indicates that this is not normal for the species.
So... just play one of the regular ones, not one of the oddly hyper-curious ones, and find a different reason why they'd be out in the world.

I have 3 cats and 2 ferrets. When I put my ferrets into their playpen they will sometimes do a ninja poop in one spot. I am used to it so I usually have a paper towel ready to clean it up. But I have had times were I needed to run to the kitchen and get one. And without fail my cat blue will always jump into the pen and start scratching at the plastic to cover the poop. LMAO she's either trying to teach them how it should be done. Or shes just being a good kitty and keeping things covered and clean. I have cracked up every single time I have seen this. And of course the ferrets are completely all about trying to play with her when she hops in.

Adventure idea- there has been an uptake in “feline ferocity” (tabaxi/weretigers/displacer beasts etc.) on the roads recently. The party’s been tasked with taking care of it.
They find an attack is going on now. The party engages and the attackers flee. They follow the group until they disappear into a worn down house on a cliff. There’s some movement inside the house. So they knock on the door. When an old woman with a cane opens the door 2 things are immediately evident
    1) there’s enough cats inside to make the beastmaster ranger want to change their favored enemy to cats for no other reason than number of xp he’d get from slaying all these cats
    2) it smells like the house is on a mountain of cat poop
When they go inside the door slams shut and several tabaxi and 2 Rakshashas come out of the shadows. Mother blackcat dispels her mass polymorph.
And you have yourself a purrfect encounter with a murderous psychotic cat lady.

Playing in a pirate themed campaign currently, my contribution is a Tabaxi rogue Inquisitive named Calico Jack. Playing into the idea of "curiosity killed the cat", with his backstory being he was accidentally bought by a drunk pirate in an attempt to procure a cat for the ship. Pirates sober up, realize they have a child and not a cat and in their swashbuckling way raise the kid into a extremely curious thief of the high seas.

I literally built an entire campaign based on the work of a Tabaxi wizard who established a city, found a xorn, and used it to find 3 platinum mines, and subsequently started a high-magic city, set up teleportation circles across the land, and his wife is a freakishly tall barbarian, both of which are level 20, and they since there was no population of tabaxi on the continent, to avoid inbreeding, they trade magic education, resources, safety, etc. to get the youth from other tabaxi communities, and they have a complex bureaucracy for this, though no government, as feral kitty just has dozens of simulacrums as sentries, and all the warding spells are cast on his home, since he is like 300, because of the clone spell, as is his wife, who he makes clones for also. I did this in part because my previous DM hated cats, and though he liked my character, he disliked cats such that I never once ran into another tabaxi in my game, so I made my campaign in the same world, but with my character having made a truly massive population of tabaxi on the continent. Though, when I originally played, he was a ranger, and it was amazingly fun, and the few times I used that feline agility it was hugely useful, kept my archer safe, I continually kicked buttocks. I've since made dozens of tabaxi characters, because they are so darn versatile.

Creative Tabaxi I've encountered: DM had a travelling window salesman who was based off a fluffy black and white housecat (my half orc got enough gold to upgrade her hut). Lynx Tabaxi mad doctor, who left their forest to find a cure for a disease (I'm DM for that campaign and I loved it when the Tabaxi teamed up with the Kenku to leap + glide and 'formed Voltron' some good dice rolls meant that between them they could jump the river between their combined abilities). Tabaxi lion paladin, ex-soldier does odd-jobs and dispenses justices - soldier background gave him a vehicular option, so he started out as a burly delivery driver making ends meet, and the party persuaded (paladin of Tritherion did not need much pursuading to help catch slavers) him into helping them with keeping justice and helping dangerous errands on behalf of the nation's ruling merchant guild; the party is based in a specific area of the kingdom, and each session is one quest, so if the Tabaxi's player can't make one session (irregular shit patterns at work) we just say he's gone off for a delivery

Heads up; novel comin' in hot.
First time commenting on one of your vids, Web DM. I discovered you earlier this year and have since binge-watch all of your videos (don't judge me, everyone has a hobby) including the Coven Razel-Sin (good stuff, by the way).
I was taught D&D around 8 years old by my parents, who were still using 1st Edition AD&D. I played that and only that for 20 years until last May when I got a group of Randos together to play 5E, thanks in part to the Angry GM and his ramblings about the system. I'd been DMing since my parents conned me into it at the age of 14 ("I get to be GOD? Of COURSE I'll do it!"); Needless to say, my 14-year-old brain was not the best at DMing, but I've gotten better. Since my discovery of Web DM I moved forward in leaps and bounds in my DMing for 5E, so thank you thank you for that!
Absolutely love your content, and look forward to following you both (and the crew!) for a good while. Keep up the post show bloopers/tangent reel. I love the times you guys bring up something from a past game and Pruitt immediately sighs, hangs his head, rubs his temples, asks God for strength, and then gives Jim a good ol' "f*ck you, Jim". Some of the best moments. That, and hairball reading tabaxi diviners.
Your shows are the perfect backdrop to listen to as I vomit out whatever "creative" stuff strikes my fancy on World Anvil; keep up the rambling spontaneous conceptual discussions.
Keep up the quality content, and add another avid support to your ever-growing list!

When I think about why Tabaxi are so fun to roleplay it's that most other standard race personalitys your dwarves and elves are based on narrower aspects of human personality where monstrous races like lizard folk, tabaxi and Kenku are based on the perceived personality of beings who are distinctly not human and Tabaxi are perhaps the best at this because we have more familiarity with the intricacies of their bizarre inhuman behaviour making them shine abouve narrower classic troupes.

I always had a thing about a Tabaxi Death Domain Cleric. Take the concept of those “omen of death” cats in nursing homes who lay down next to people just before they die, and really lean into it. And you have this balancing act, where there god is willing to heal them and their friends because this Tabaxi goes to see people who are suffering in life and offer them peace, and it’ll lay down next to them until they cross to the other side.

I loved my Yabaxi hawk totem barbarian gladiator named Ogres Loincloth. I hammed up the wrestler deal ala King from Tekken. Totally Ric Flaired it up. He was a "Worg riding, wyvern flying, wheeling dealing, kobold baby stealing, fledgling of a fletcher. Woo!" Also tabaxi tend to have names that are also objects or things. So having the DM say "Ogres Loincloth" every intiative was worth a laugh or snicker from the table.

I love the Khatta from the Quest for Glory series. I also love the fact that you have reference this classic Sierra PC game a few times.
