This is the video I needed! Thanks for sharing this gem! Quick question where did you order your shirt? I’m looking to get a custom polo style shirt with my brand on it and your quality looks like something I need!
It doesn’t function that way. A hyperdeck only records or plays back video. It does not do both of those functions simultaneously. With this build I hid two SDI to HDMI bidirectional converters inside the rack case on a shelf. If you check the video at 04:30 I mention this. The hyperdecks are on the next rack down and are separate functions from the bidirectional converters.
Love this build. unrelated question, the background that you are standing in front of, with the redand green lights shining on it. I am looking for somethign like that to put on the glass windows in our studio. Where did you get it?
Pretty sure I saw a video of yours where you fitted a dedicated PSU with pigtails for all the equipment. Could you point me in the right direction please? I don't think a normal power conditioner is going to work for me as I need 120-240V switching.
How many bidirectional converters you use? You stated 2 but I count 3 being needed. 2 for the hdmi input and one for the hdmi output unless I missed something? Thank you for your help!
The new hyperdecks have HDMI input so you don't need a converter for the hdmi output from the ATEM. The hyperdeck also has SDI outputs so it handles the conversion.
Usually I bring a Zoom Livetrak L8 if I need to do audio myself but most of the time now I hire a local sound guy and include that in my pricing. There’s nothing like having a dedicated sound person handle all the in room speakers, mics and sound for the stream. I just take a XLR to 3.5mm directly into the atem.
Hi Tony thanks for the question. If you watch through I mentioned that I have SDI converters hidden on the shelf (04:26) just below the monitor in this case to do just that. You can use the same bi-directional converters (07:54) that I link to in the description below the video to do the same.
Great setup! I'm looking to do something very similar. Quick question: I see you have two addition outputs, one SDI and one HDMi, where are they coming from and how are they patched? Also, I know this is a lot, but would you mind doing a video of how you put this all together?
The Hyperdeck that is recording program feed has additional outputs so they're coming from there. I wish I could do a video of how I put it all together but it's already built and it would require an immense amount of time to document all of that. As much as I'd much rather do that, I have my business I'm still working in 60-80 hours per week :-) but I do plan on making more content again soon. I'm also working on an alternative rack build that will be using some PTZ cameras Canon just released. It's all in the pipeline but I'm just one person with two hands and only 24 hours in the day.
What were the hyperdecks for? I'm just ignorant, not trying to be combative. I've done live streams with everything you've got here besides the hyperdecks. Any insight on this from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
@@zephanmoses thanks! So would that be different than recording to a Samsung ssd? That’s what I’ve done in the past. Is there a better reason to use hyperdecks to record? Redundancy? I appreciate the reply!
@@mt1990sweg the hyperdecks record to SD card and only record one video signal at a time. But make for a great backup. Those SSDs can (and will) fail. What happens if it does? Do you go to the client and say oops? That could be a tough convo to have. So we use them to record the program feed as an addition to recording to SSD. On ISO model atems, you can record all camera inputs plus program to the SSD so there is a benefit to having all feeds on one drive. One other thing you could do with the hyperdeck is output the clean feed to it meaning it doesn’t record graphics from your keyers and then you have a clean recording to edit or repurpose later. News stations also like getting a clean feed. One last thing - some model hyperdecks can record in 4K. Additionally because they have both SDI and HDMI inputs and looping outputs, they can act as a quick converter in a pinch.
This is really great. I've been considering rack-mounting my ATEM mini extreme with a kit but this is looking like a nice, more custom option. With the patch-panel, how did you rack the SDI/HDMI converters? I'll need to do the same and wondering if they are flush with the patch panel or just tucked away somewhere inside. I'd prefer to make them removable if I need to change my setup or one of them goes bad (it has happened to my team a lot).
The converters are zip tied to a shelf just beneath the pullout monitor. There are two and they’re powered by a usb hub. All products are linked in the video description.
Hi I'm sorry but I don't. I will say that I ultimately determined this setup to be a bit heavier than I wanted it to be so I'm re-working it right now and will certainly be updating with an ew video once I land on a better solution. Ultimately I found that one large case is heavy and not as efficient as it looks.
@@zephanmoses That's good to know. Looking forward to your next mobile set-up. As a community college, we're trying to work in mobile live streaming for graduation and awards events. Still on the hunt for the ultimate set up. :)
thank you for this video, i might assemble the same. just wanted to ask, is there a difference between recording from hd plus vs recording straight to atem extreme (hyperdeck high)? is there a big difference in terms of recording quality?
Nope not a big difference. For me, I like having backups. I would never rely on just recording straight from the atem to a hard drive. What happens if that file is corrupt? Do you refund the client? Do you lose the client? For me, having a second recorder that not only records to a different media (SD) but also allows you to send out HDMI and SDI duplicates so you don’t need a splitter and on top of that the USB output acts as a second capture device. So it’s more than just recording. It’s about backups and additional capabilities.
The switch came with rack mounts that screw into it. For mounting one hyperdeck it's the same as the others - Blackmagic makes a shelf you can buy that the hyperdeck screws into.
@@zephanmoses Did you have any issues mounting the Hyperdeck to the rack shelf? Only one screw hole lined up on my Hyperdeck to the rack shelf and left the Hyperdeck a little loose. I had to drill a hole in the shelf in order to mount the Hyperdeck to the shelf with two screws.
I'm in the process of working on a Flypack build for live events. What are your thoughts on the Teradek VidiU X HD Video Streaming System ? I'm wanting to make sure I have a setup that will allow me to stream if I had to connect to a hotspot. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Just got one actually! Haven’t had time to put it to work but I have a netgear nighthawk M5 in the mail I’d like to pair up with it. I’ve used other Teradeks but my concern with this one is that it doesn’t use their core platform which I’m familiar with so I’ll need to learn a whole new platform.
Why use the Hyperdecks to record if you have an ISO version? I understand needing them to provide playback but I believe I heard you mention you were using one of the to record.
Both Hyperdecks are NOT recording. But it's always smart to have backups my friend! Backups always. Anything can and will go wrong on a shoot. This is set up so one hyperdeck is able to do video playbacks into the livestream while the other hyperdeck records program feed from the atem. On top of that since it's a hyperdeck taking an HDMI input, it's also essentially giving me additional HDMI and SDI outputs of the program feed in case I want to route them somewhere else like to my Shogun, a monitor, etc. But I would never just rely on recording ISOs to a solid state drive. I've seen enough people experience failures in the Facebook groups and I myself have experienced a couple of odd occurrences. I'd rather be safe than sorry with a SSD and Hyperdeck both recording program feed.
@@zephanmoses I have the Extreme ISO, if I wanted to capture the feeds from cameras 1 thru 4, could I use a hyperdeck for each, plug in directy to hyperdeck then HDMI out back to Extreme?
@@brian2k1 You could but that would get very expensive very quickly. It would be easier to record in camera and then also record ISOs to an external hard drive from the ATEM but if you want to buy 4 hyperdecks be my guest!
@@zephanmoses I'm impressed by your prompt reply. I'm now a subscriber to your channel. I bought a portable monitor after one reviewer stated that it works with the Atem Mini Pro, so I assumed it would work with the Extreme as well. However, after buying it I found out that it does not work with the Extreme. Thank you so much.
@@EvangelicalChurchOfRevival There's a chance your extreme was on a different framerate and it's just the framerate that wasn't compatible. Some monitors like these small portable ones are made for computer use so they might work with 30 frames but not 24 or 60. Make sure to check the specifications from the manufacturer on each monitor and to check your settings in the ATEM for framerate.
@@zephanmoses I don't remember setting the frame rate in the switcher. I always set it in RUclips. In RUclips I stream in 1080p60 and it worked on the new monitor connected to the Pro. But when I swapped in the Extreme no image appeared on the monitor.
It’s hefty. Maybe 45lb or so. I’m working on creating a smaller 6U setup for all of my hyperdecks and converters and then taking the atem on the sliding shelf and slide out monitor and moving them to something small like a 3U case. So it will split them into two cases. I know everyone wants to see a one size fits all option but the weight has been preventing me from taking this setup out of the office.
Hmmm, I think ~20 kg is a tolerable weight.. IMHO, by separating ATEM and converters, you will lose the main advantage - a lot of connecting cables will be on the outside ... And a few more questions. Does the rack fan cool the ATEM well enough when it is pulled out for work? Cause ATEM likes to heat up a lot. And does it make a loud noise?
@@kestutisnavikas8458 the fan is pretty quiet and pulls air through the entire inside of the rack case. With the atem out it does not have an impact on the atem but I have yet to have an issue with heat. I think a lot of people operate these atems and expect it to handle encoding, recording 8 isos at a time and basically try to use every function at once. I offload recording to a hyperdeck. I sometimes offload encoding too. It never heats up.
Unfortunately no but I did list the parts below the video. Some people are selling prebuilt cases that do far less but shipping alone on this would probably cost hundreds.
I’ve since torn it apart and make a different setup but I would guess around 45lb. It goes on a cart when it comes out of the car though so it’s not like we’re carrying it for distance. Just off the cart and onto a table.
Yep I was pretty surprised too. Most of them that I found are made for server cabinets so they weren't 16x9 or HD. A lot of them were low resolution and weird computer sizes.
@@AmazeStudios I have two of the new hyperdecks mounted to it as seen in this video. I think the hyperdecks in general are misunderstood. People don’t use the correct SD cards with the proper read and write speeds, people don’t set the proper codec for video playback, the list goes on and on. Ultimately I think about 80% of the “reviews” are user error and not reading the manual, or what people post in the forums.
Hi Zephan, how are you? I'm really enjoying the content posted here. I have some clients that have been demanding a virtual audience on a stage panel. Also live split-screen video calls during live. I'm having trouble working out a way to eliminate the lag generated by zoom or other apps. Could you give me any tips on this? Thank you very much!
Hi there! There will always be a small lag when using platforms like Zoom. In fact most communication tools like Zoom, Skype, Google Meets, etc. all have a small lag due to the signal needing to be compressed and sent out over the internet in real time. I haven't seen lag be a big issue though so long as everyone has strong internet. If it's really causing an issue you may need to look at investing into something like Vmix or a Tricaster with Skype Call Connect. It's not going to be cheap but there's a reason why the bigger companies are using it. Did you take a look at the video I did about my custom virtual caller unit?
@@zephanmoses Yes, I saw the video and found it very interesting. I didn't completely understand how to return the video call to the Atem mini stream 😅. Would it be through one of the monitor's hdmi outputs?
@@guilhermerossafa2187 yep so both monitors have hdmi in and loop out inside the rig. So monitor two which is where I pin the person full screen, I loop out to the atem.
I'm building a smilar rack! How do you solve the cables from atem to the patch panel so it does not get stuck when moving back and forth? You mentioned something like super thin HDMI cable?
You compare this to the Tricaster. But I do not see any graphic capability (none at all), no ability to key or bring in virtual sets, no NDI, etc (I won't even get into the internal audio mixing capabilities of the Tricaster). This is nice, but it's still missing a lot and is far from a complete studio that will produce finished productions that don't need editing. Most high end productions require graphics, roll-ins, music beds, Zoom call inserts, etc. So anything you produce with this, that is substantial, will need additional editing or hardware. If I'm wrong, please show me where those other capabilities are. Thanks!
Thanks for your feedback Helen, the Tricaster serves a different purpose and is used for events that require virtual participant integration. It was however my colleague’s main and only switcher for a long time which meant there were not options that would support his streaming needs at a lower price. This isn’t to say that there are features the Atem has that the TC doesn’t, it’s simply to say there wasn’t a good model made to support the lower end need for multi-camera switching (up to 8 inputs) with video playback, graphics and recording (all of which the atem does). With that said I have a separate video on my channel about my custom Zoom caller unit I built if I need to add a virtual participant. Beyond that I would use the Tricaster TC2 Elite as we often do. Regarding your question about graphics the hyperdeck for video playback could offer a key and fill output if needed but I use the built in media pool, OBS or Titler Live based on what’s needed. This video was in no way meant to explain that this production unit replaces a Tricaster. It does however achieve many professional livestream productions on a weekly basis for me and has been responsible for over $350,000 in revenue for my business in the last 12 months. Again, I’ll repeat this isn’t to replace the Tricaster but just as there are proper tools for a project (you wouldn’t bring a jack hammer to nail a piece of wood), this serves a purpose for many of the livestreams we conduct year round.
@@zephanmoses I think that's key, what you mention, "lower-end," and that would've been nice to hear during your presentation. But the Tricaster-mini is impressive possible alternative for what you're trying to achieve. And for the price and it's capabilities may out perform the Atem? Maybe you can do a side by side comparison of the two and their capabilities and costs. That would be something nice. Thanks!
Seems like the pricing for that monitor has skyrocketed since you got it. I really want one, but that's a hard nut to swallow now at $899 for the SDI version.
Hahahaha yeah sure. You can make things as expensive as you like and then compare it to something even more expensive. This rack is crazy expensive. There are lots of other way way cheaper solutions on youtube. This is just crazy.

How are you managing the IP addresses of all the devices so you don't have to reconnect to the ATEM and relink the Hyperdecks everytime you power on?
@@ThulinMedia there’s a gigabit Ethernet switch in the back of the rack and all IP addresses are set static.
Pretty sweet indeed!
Great overall setup. What's your strategy when it comes to audio? especially when dealing with mix/minus
Can I purchase on already built?
@@anointed803 I wish but shipping alone would be a fortune. It can be built in an hour if you get the full parts list. It’s really not that bad.
What is the name of the blank spacer next to the TP- Link switch?
It’s not a spacer, it’s just the mounting “ears” that came with the switch
How did you rack mount the network switch? I don't see that in the list. Does it come with a mount?
It came with rack ears to mount it
@@zephanmoses awesome, thanks.
What do you suggest if I want to run my cameras using SDI cables back to this box?
@@zephanmoses my dog stepped on a bee 🐝 i am a one man show can you see?👀
What were the hyperdecks for? I'm just ignorant, not trying to be combative.
I've done live streams with everything you've got here besides the hyperdecks. Any insight on this from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
@@mt1990sweg usually just for recording the livestream. But in this setup I had one for video playback and one for recording.
This is a really cool set-up. I wonder if you have a schematic for your set-up?
Hi I'm sorry but I don't. I will say that I ultimately determined this setup to be a bit heavier than I wanted it to be so I'm re-working it right now and will certainly be updating with an ew video once I land on a better solution. Ultimately I found that one large case is heavy and not as efficient as it looks.
@@zephanmoses That's good to know. Looking forward to your next mobile set-up. As a community college, we're trying to work in mobile live streaming for graduation and awards events. Still on the hunt for the ultimate set up. :)
what do you use to capture sound
An audio team 😉 they will provide me an XLR to 3.5mm feed for the atem.
thank you for this video, i might assemble the same. just wanted to ask, is there a difference between recording from hd plus vs recording straight to atem extreme (hyperdeck high)? is there a big difference in terms of recording quality?
Nope not a big difference. For me, I like having backups. I would never rely on just recording straight from the atem to a hard drive. What happens if that file is corrupt? Do you refund the client? Do you lose the client? For me, having a second recorder that not only records to a different media (SD) but also allows you to send out HDMI and SDI duplicates so you don’t need a splitter and on top of that the USB output acts as a second capture device. So it’s more than just recording. It’s about backups and additional capabilities.
@@zephanmoses thank you so much for the info. i really appreciate your feedback. your correct redundancy is so important.
Awesome kit! how did you mount the gigabit switch and do you have any advice on mounting just one Hyperdeck HD plus?
The switch came with rack mounts that screw into it. For mounting one hyperdeck it's the same as the others - Blackmagic makes a shelf you can buy that the hyperdeck screws into.
@@zephanmoses Did you have any issues mounting the Hyperdeck to the rack shelf? Only one screw hole lined up on my Hyperdeck to the rack shelf and left the Hyperdeck a little loose. I had to drill a hole in the shelf in order to mount the Hyperdeck to the shelf with two screws.
@@johnramirez5411 I made it work but I think there’s a new version of rack shelf.
@Zephan Moses - Live Streamer nice setup! Thanks for sharing
Cool setup! I wanna make something like that 👍🏻
You should!
So what is the 2nd hyper deck for? The playback one?
One for playback and one for recording the livestream.
Please let me know were to buy pull out monitor?
Please see the description under the video for links to the monitor.
@@zephanmoses of course in camera. duh! thank you! LOL

I’m sorry I don’t have a diagram at this time.
Thanks for the video Zephan. Can you recommend a less than $300, 15" portable monitor that is compatible with the Atem Mini Extreme.
Yep! I actually really like using the super thin portable monitors on Amazon that you can find for about
@@zephanmoses I'm impressed by your prompt reply.
@@EvangelicalChurchOfRevival yep it’s probably the framerate you set in the software control on the switcher.
Thanks for sharing! How much does this system weigh?

How much does this whole thing weigh?
I’ve since torn it apart and make a different setup but I would guess around 45lb. It goes on a cart when it comes out of the car though so it’s not like we’re carrying it for distance. Just off the cart and onto a table.
How are there so few options for a monitor in a drawer?! Just purchased the same monitor, so few videos on it on RUclips!
Yep I was pretty surprised too. Most of them that I found are made for server cabinets so they weren't 16x9 or HD. A lot of them were low resolution and weird computer sizes.

@@zephanmoses thanks! It wasn’t clear if it was compatible. Any issues with the hyper decks? The reviews aren’t too good
@@AmazeStudios I have two of the new hyperdecks mounted to it as seen in this video.

@@mastersstudio5547 I’m sorry I don’t offer that as a service. I run a video production studio full time and don’t have additional time to offer that.
What is your mobile internet solution?
LiveU Solo
Thanks!
