  • Anchorage Daily News visual journalist Loren Holmes and reporter Hal Bernton were aboard the factory trawler Northern Hawk in August as it fished for pollock in the Bering Sea off Alaska.

    It's funny because that wasn't objective at all. Is the title supposed to be taken literally? That was so surface level its not even funny, where's the in depth journalism?

      @Pyrus335 We take random samples of fish from throughout every haul and keep track of average length/weight divided by sex. We also collect otoliths, which can be used to track growth rates and the age of an individual fish. And we also collect and weigh byctah from ~1/3 of the haul to get an idea of what fish besides pollock are being impacted. In the case of salmon, every single one gets collected, and counted at the end of the haul. Along with sex/length/weight/and genetic samples to determine which population of salmon specifically is being impacted.

      @@benosick8542 What more can be done? I spent all summer of 2023 on the Yukon system guiding and didn't see a single salmon.
