Fascinating story and history lesson. I was born and raised in KANSAS. I had no idea about this Bison Ranch. Thanks for showing us this rancher. Keep bringing us more. Stories and more history lessons.

It is interesting to me that cattle were introduced to save the Buffalo and that the cattle genes were able to be reduced in the Buffalo to get back to an almost pure Buffalo herd. So, the cattle served its purpose in saving the buffalo!
It really is interesting Lisa! Unfortunately the cattle gene in the bison wasn’t a good thing though. When the ranchers introduced it they quickly found out that it was not something that they wanted in the animals but by then it was too late. It has been by painstaking efforts from ranchers to remove that gene out in the later years. Fascinating history though!
@@BrokenArrowBison Was it done artificially? He mentioned that the cattle and bison in his herd don't intermingle much, so I assumed it may have been a manual thing they did. If so, it seems nature always knows best.
No it wasn’t. If you give them a herd to go to they won’t cross breed but if you leave them one on one they will sometimes.

Yeah this is traditionally prairie ground. I’m not even sure how well trees would grow in that environment. Bison actually do great out in the field though. A lot of times they prefer being out in the middle of the sun as opposed to in the shade! Very cool animals!
Would love to see as many episodes like this as you can pull off. I’ll never have the acreage for bison (Southern mountain land ain’t their thing), but watch these type of videos for the encouragement they bring to us all to do what we can to holistically manage land, even if it’s just a suburban backyard. And they remind us to support small ranchers! I hope one day you find one in the Deep South - I heard we used to have bison roam the pine savannahs.

Lori, it took me about 20+ years from the time I got the idea, till I brought my first bison onto my land.

Hey Noah, love these episodes with the large producers. This was especially great because of the holistic management. While these large producers are nice to see I really enjoy seeing the smaller producers like you and Dusty. It is the small producers that will really expand the bison numbers. Looking forward to more episodes on your own operation as it matures.

Ok Noah that was interesting to see , I’m curious that is a massive land mass , if you only have say 20 or 30 acres can that still work ? If you were doing what he does how many pastures would you need with your herd + a few . Lol
I think it could work, but figuring out how many pastures and where to put them is something that is specific to the individual context, there is no how to do it system. Holistic Management is a framework that is made to help your self decide all your actions like figuring out how many pastures you need. Doing the official HM training course I think is the best investment one can make and learn this stuff, especially if you are in agriculture.
This ranch is in a very dry area of NW Kansas so a large amount of acres is required per bison. Lots different that farm of Noah’s in SE KS
Those are great questions Ken. But yes it can absolutely work on smaller ground. I have worked with this with my last farm with very good results.

This was extremely interesting. I am from Kansas and didn’t realize there are so many bison ranches. That would be huge on moving them so often to the new pasture. Looking forward to more videos.
It’s pretty cool to watch them move the animals. It’s not hard though. They basically fallow them to the new pasture because they want new grass.

This Holistic Management stuff is very interesting, where to go if I want to learn about it?
Look up Allan Savory founder of the Holistic Management concept. He showed the companion handbook at the beginning of the video.
I would also suggest listening to Joel Salatin speak. He doesn't do bison, but does cattle, pigs, chickens and there are quite a few of his speeches on RUclips. His pasture rotation system is just like the one in this video.
There are 12 Savory Hubs in America where you can go and pay for a training course, I believe it is a 2 week course for the full training.

Noah very interesting. I didn't know we had a bison ranch in northwest Kansas. I heard Dodge City. Is this where this gentleman's ranch is? Your is southeast Kansas. Very interesting listening to him. Love watching his bison roaming & grazing. Good job. Keep the videoes coming.
No he has about four hours north of Dodge city. Believe it or not there are hundreds of bison ranchers in Kansas!

I found it interesting that he had cattle because some cattle breeders always said Buffalo spread brucellosis but then you would hear thats not so.
Even his cattle sounded so hardy and not marbled which to me makes it hard for me to digest.
That rancher was a wealth of information very very impressive!!

As a guy who is very interested in Holistic Management and hope to take a official course at a Savory Hub, this was a great video.
Another great ranch to visit who is managing holistically, that I have also suggested to you before is ROAM Bison, the managers there are quite a bit younger than this fine man here. They have a great story.

Ken talks about buying Allan Savorys book 30 years ago and learning a lot from it. If you are interested in going down the same road, I can recommend getting the latest version of Allans book from 2016 on Holistic Management, which is the third and improved version of it, called "Holistic Management; A Commonsense Revolution to Restore Our Environment"

Just looked up the "Buffalo Guys" to see about ordering meat. Unfortunately, it says it is permanently closed.

I just found out they permanently closed. Does anyone know what happened? For years I ordered from them and my kids were raised on their meat including the hot dogs.
