As harsh as it may look but Yukichi really values Ranpo a LOT. If anything Ranpo has never experience that type of care before meeting Yukichi or specify a guardian that care about him and his well being. He thought that Yukichi would be proud for his reckless and catching the guy but in reality he got something better, a mental hit that broken down what Ranpo's worldview of himself was which in order to be loved is to be useful if it mean taking the risk of life and death but Yukichi is different than the other adults he encountered. It very obvious that Ranpo extreme lack self esteem was cause by people treated him like an adult and if he not capable of handling "adult" situations then he deem as useless and not worth anything. I think Ranpo forgets that he is just a child(14) which is why he finally broke down and apologize profusely like a child would. In episode 1 when being told to be quiet by Yukichi, I could tell that he wanted to tear up(I say that because i started cry when Ranpo completely shut down) but holding back out of fear being scolded again or if Yukichi is like the others. Anyway my heart~ :'3
Father and son without a blood tie is my favorite type of relationship in the entire entertainment industry, that's why Fukuzawa and Ranpo are my favourite relationship in Bungo even over the ships that I like

Goddammit, it broke me when Ranpo started crying. 😭It really nails home that here he's still just a 14 year-old kid that probably was scared but also acting recklessly and just got scolded and smacked by his "dad". The way he started sobbing and saying "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" over and over again while hugging Fukuzawa broke me, too, because it reminded me a little too much of my own childhood. Pretty sure I've done that exact same thing when I was a child, at least once or twice, because I made my mother angry and I was afraid of losing her support/love. My mother wasn't abusive though, so I don't know why I felt that way, but it sticks with me nonetheless. I WAS abused by my older brother, whom I also recall saying "sorry" to over and over but more so out of fear of getting physically assaulted than fear of losing his emotional support and affection. It worries me and makes me wonder if perhaps Ranpo was also abused at some point prior to meeting Fukuzawa. That fawn response can't be natural, and sadly it isn't uncommon for gifted/twice exceptional children to wind up abused/neglected because of the double-edged sword of being both highly intelligent and having special needs aka "high maintenance". I was often accused of being too sensitive as a child as well, and told that I needed to develop a thicker skin, stop being such a drama queen. But I couldn't help it, I just felt things so intensely.
